Shania Twain to play Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Country pop superstar will rock the city's concert grounds on the Labour Day weekend
By Dave Stewart | February 25, 2014
Canadian country pop singer Shania Twain is coming to Charlottetown this summer, The Guardian has learned.
No one is dishing out details yet but the official announcement is expected to be made in the very near future at a press conference.
The Guardian was able to confirm that the Charlottetown Event Grounds has been booked for a concert on the Labour Day weekend. This concert has been rumoured since early in the year when talk of party plans for 2014 began to trickle out.
The concert would serve as the grand finale for what is being called Founders’ Week, one of dozens of events built around celebrating the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which led to Confederation.
The Guardian did seek comment from Penny Walsh McGuire, executive director for P.E.I. 2014 Inc., but that call was not returned. This newspaper also called Wayne Long, events development officer for the City of Charlottetown, but he wouldn’t confirm or deny the news.
“2014 will be a year of great events and celebrations,’’ Long said, declining to comment specifically on the Twain concert.
The Guardian has also learned that a block of rooms at the Holman Grand hotel in Charlottetown has been booked for Twain but a spokeswoman for the hotel denied that.
There is already quite a bit of chatter on the C103, a Moncton rock radio station, website with one person saying “as a finale for this summer’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference, a major concert is in the works for August. DKD is the promoter’’.
DKD is well-known Canadian concert promoter Donald Tarlton, chairman of the Donald K. Donald Group of Companies. Tarlton is working with the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), an American worldwide sporting and music entertainment company, to supply the show.
Twain is probably best known for her 1995 album The Woman In Me although it was her 1997 release Come On Over that became the best-selling studio album of all time by a female act in any genre and the best-selling country album of all time, selling more than 40 million copies. Her fourth and last studio album Up! was released in November 2002 and has sold more than 20 million copies.
She just finished her two-year show Shania: Still the One show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and is scheduled to perform two concerts at the Calgary Stampede in July, the first one of which sold out in minutes.
The five-time Grammy Award winner apparently also has a new album in the works.
I'll be there with bells on if it turns out to be true.. Charlottetown is only a few hrs from where I'm living.. I have friends and family all around there...!! woohoo!!!
At this point I think that she won't renew her contract in Vegas. She'll perform some concerts in the US and Canada between Vegas till the end of the year and then she'll record her new album in 2015. That's my hope, of course. Maybe she'll work on it in March and April to have at least 1 new song in August. That's my hope, at least.
With these concerts I am also thinking that there might be a change she will not renew Vegas. How are the Vegas sales going? I mean, the Stampede show was sold out in minutes, and as far as I know the Vegas shows are selling quite alright, but nowhere near as good as the stampede.

July 16, 18 and 19 2014; Shania Twain in Las Vegas!!! Thank you Shania for the selfie!!!
Yeah, according to the sales, the only completely sold-out shows had been the first two back in December 2012.
She said that in January she would've discuss with AEG about the possibility of a renewal but nothing has been said since then.
Or maybe she'll do what Celine did: two/three years off Vegas to tour and release a new album and then she'll be back in Vegas with a new show.
But I also think that those two sold-out shows in Canada made her change her mind about now wanting to tour anymore around the world and to settle in Vegas. Apparently. there are still lots of people out there eager to see her live outside Sin City.

Shania Twain concert in Charlottetown a year in the making
Five-time Grammy Award winner to perform Aug. 30
By Dave Stewart | February 26, 2014
Concert promoter Andre Hudon says it took a year and a bit of convincing to lure country superstar Shania Twain to Charlottetown.
The president and CEO of Donald K. Donald says two factors swayed the five-time Grammy Award winner — it was in Charlottetown and it was a special show to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864 that led to Confederation.
“She is not touring. This is a special event, an anniversary celebration and that’s what appealed to her,’’ Hudon said following a press conference on Wednesday that confirmed Twain is coming to Charlottetown.
“She wasn’t looking for things to do,’’ said Debra Rathwell, senior vice-president of AEG Live, one of the world’s leading entertainment companies, “but this appealed to her.’’
In a prepared statement, Twain says “I am looking forward to returning to Atlantic Canada after 15 years and playing Charlottetown and P.E.I. for the first time,’’ Twain said. “I’m so excited to participate in this very special anniversary event.’’
Indeed, Twain hasn’t played a single show in Atlantic Canada since March 13, 1999 at the Moncton Coliseum.
“It’s been a year in the making, not only to get (Twain) involved (but) getting the city, getting 2014, getting the site, because the site has never held an event of this nature,’’ Hudon said.
Twain, who hasn’t released a studio album since 2002’s Up! is still a big ticket. She has two shows scheduled in July at the Calgary Saddledome and both sold out in minutes. She’s in the midst of a two-year run in Las Vegas.
The show takes place on Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Charlottetown Event Grounds during Founders’ Week so the concert will actually take place on the same week the Fathers of Confederation were meeting in town 150 years ago.
Based on parameters set out by provincial fire marshal Dave Rossiter and Charlottetown fire chief Winstan Bryan, ticket sales are being capped at 28,000. Those tickets are $89.50 for general admission and $179.50 for reserved grandstand seating. Those prices include taxes.
Premier Robert Ghiz confirmed the province is contributing $250,000 through the 2014 fund.
Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee said the show isn’t costing city residents one penny.
“Best part is the taxpayers of Charlottetown are not contributing any funds to the event. We will provide in-kind services, similar to what we would do for any other event in the city,’’ Lee said, noting that there will be additional costs incurred by the police department.
“Obviously (Twain) is one of the biggest names out there (and the fact that she’s) coming to small city of 35,000 people speaks volumes about what this city is all about.’’
Wayne Long, events development officer for the city, said it’s a real coup, especially over the Labour Day weekend when tourism traffic is traditionally slower.
“Without a doubt, an event of this caliber is going to create substantial economic tourism and cultural prosperity,’’ Long said, noting that 2014 will be a year full of celebrations and events.
Ghiz calls the concert “a once in a generation opportunity’’.
“What better way to celebrate this great historical event than hosting a world-class concert featuring one of the most successful musicians of all time,’’ the premier said.
Tickets go on sale Friday, March 7 at 10 a.m. They'll be available at Eastlink Centre and online at www.shaniaPEI.ca.
If you're planning on purchasing Shania Twain tickets Friday, click the link below and create an account with Eastlink Centre Charlottetown box office. It will help you skip a step when you try to purchase tickets!
Staff at Charlottetown's Eastlink Centre is taking extra steps to avoid a computer crash when Shania Twain tickets go on sale Friday.
The concert will be held at the Charlottetown Event Grounds Aug. 30. The grounds are operated by Eastlink Centre, and preparation for the event has included a major software upgrade.
The 28,000 tickets for the Twain show go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. Eastlink Centre general manager Dave McGrath said the company that developed the ticket sales software has experience with high-volume sales.
"It was for the theatre district in Boston and Wicked was one of the major shows on sale there and I believe they processed something, over a few days, of 60,000 tickets, and this is the system that they utilized in this upgrade," said McGrath.
"So fingers crossed, we're doing everything that we can to make it a pleasant experience."
The company is sending staff to Charlottetown to deal with any problems.
Eastlink Centre is suggesting people wanting tickets online sign up in advance. Having billing and mailing information already be in the system will make it easier on Friday.
Three ticket windows will be open at Eastlink Centre for walk up business, and people can also try dialing a phone number to make purchases.
Myers raises concerns about funding for Shania Twain concert
March 6, 2014
Opposition Leader Steven Myers is astounded by Premier Robert Ghiz's ". . . inability to get his priorities straight," he says, in light of the premier's recent announcement of a concert event in Charlottetown. "Robert Ghiz is not an event promoter," said Myers. "He's lost any sense of what his priorities should be as premier.
Myers said he should have been announcing job creation and economic development initiatives, not "...riding the coat-tails of a one-day concert event that many Islanders simply cannot afford to attend."
Myers is making reference to the province's decision to support bringing Shania Twain to Charlottetown Aug. 30. Tickets for the five-time Grammy award winning artist are $89.50 for general admission and $179.50 for reserved grandstand seating.
Ghiz confirmed the province is contributing $250,000 through the 2014 fund to bring Twain to P.E.I.
"The sort of economic spin-offs that come with major events, even one-night events like this, are positive. But one-off events cannot be the basis of our economy, though the premier may not understand that."
Myers said Ghiz needs to focus on long-term development and the creation of meaningful full-time employment.
Eastlink Centre expects Shania Twain tickets will be hot item Friday
By Dave Stewart | March 6, 2014
Staff at Charlottetown’s Eastlink Centre are bracing for a busy day on Friday when tickets to Shania Twain go on sale to the public.
There were a limited number of tickets sold to sponsors on Thursday but sales to the public begin Friday at 10 a.m.
Dave McGrath, general manager of the Eastlink Centre, says they’ve taken steps to try and make sure the computer system doesn’t crash with the demand.
A major software and hardware upgrade has been made to the ticketing system this week, giving the Eastlink Centre more capacity to handle traffic and greater speed.
“The new software program is to make sure that the speed is there,’’ McGrath said.
Shania Twain will perform at the Charlottetown Event Grounds on Saturday, Aug. 30. The grounds are operated by the Eastlink Centre. Ticket sales will be capped at 28,000 based on the provincial fire marshal’s inspection of the site.
The new ticketing system that will be used Friday and going forward was given a test-run in Boston.
“It went very, very well. We’re working with the company and there has been some successes with it so we’re hoping for the same thing (Friday).’’
McGrath is asking those trying to buy tickets on Friday to be as patient as possible.
“The tough part is that initial spike at the start of the sale where could potentially have 20,000 . . . to 60,000 people trying to get on the system. We’re just asking people to be patient so they can work their way through.’’
The company that’s helping the Eastlink Centre upgrade for the Shania sale has had representatives in Charlottetown all week working on and monitoring the system.
McGrath also suggested people looking for tickets online set up an account in advance. Having mailing and billing information already in the system will speed things up on Friday.
McGrath said staff will be manning the phones on Friday and three ticket windows will be open for walkup sales.
“It will be interesting to see exactly what the walkup will be. Traditionally, walkup isn’t what it used to be in the old days. Now, with computers and technology, we figure the computer probably will be our No. 1 (area) where people are shopping. No. 2 will be phones and walkup will be three.’’
These are busy times for the arena. It’s just coming off the Jack Frost Festival, has been going back and forth between Island Storm playoff basketball games and the QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders. It has the Shania sale and the P.E.I. Home Show getting underway Friday.
“We’re in the thick of it. It’s part of our business plan. We’ve been looking at different businesses and how to increase (traffic in the arena and trade centre). Now, with the event grounds, it’s certainly what it’s all about.’’
I seen/heard somewhere that there was going to be 4,000 seats, but then I seen a number of 2,000.. So either or..
There could be several reasons for the position of the grandstand...
About 35 people lined up for Shania Twain tickets before 10 a.m. today at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown
Tickets to the Shania Twain concert in Charlottetown are officially on sale.
About a handful of people told The Guardian they camped out in their cars overnight outside the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown to make sure they weren’t disappointed at the ticket windows.
About 35 people had lined up in person at the arena by 9:30 a.m. today. The ticket windows opened at 10 a.m., the same time tickets went on sale online and over the phone.
Dave McGrath, general manager of the Eastlink Centre, reports that the new software and hardware ticketing system is working fine, so far, but asked people to be patient because the demand online is expected to be strong throughout the day.
Twain will perform at the Charlottetown Event Grounds on Saturday, Aug. 30, as the grand finale for Founders' Week, which is part of the big 150th anniversary of Confederation celebrations.
Shania Twain fans brave freezing cold for tickets to Charlottetown show
By Dave Stewart | March 7, 2014
They came from Montague, camped out overnight in the freezing cold but were still singing on Friday morning.
Kristena McCormack, her mother Mary McCormack and Mary's best friend Donna Cain arrived at the Eastlink Centre at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, nearly 14 hours before tickets to one of the biggest shows in Charlottetown this year went on sale.
Shortly after 10 a.m., they were literally singing and dancing out of the building with their Shania Twain tickets in hand.
The women spent the entire night cuddled under blankets in their car, occasionally turning the engine on in minus-30 degree weather to keep warm.
"Look at me, I'm shaking. This is awesome,'' Mary McCormack said as she gazed down at her prized tickets. "I need to go outside to scream. Was it worth it? 110 per cent. I waited a lifetime and I still have six months to go.''
Twain will headline a concert at the Charlottetown Event Grounds on Saturday, Aug. 30, as part of Founders' Week to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
Tickets appeared to be selling fast.
Dave McGrath, general manager of the Eastlink Centre, which operates the concert grounds, said the reserved grandstand seating is sold out but that there are still general admission tickets left. He wouldn't say how many tickets had been sold.
The Eastlink Centre spent the week upgrading its computer system and testing it out. McGrath said staff was pleased with how things went and he thanked fans for their patience during the day.
About a half hour before the ticket windows opened, there are approximately 35 people waiting in line but most people were expected to turn to the Internet.
Kristena McCormack said it was worth camping out overnight even though the lineup wasn't long.
"What if we didn't and when we got here there were 100 people waiting? You never know,'' Kristena McCormack said. "(I've been a huge fan) since birth because of my mother.''
Gail Feehan of Charlottetown also camped out in her car overnight so she could be close to the front of the line.
"I sat in my car with a couple of blankets and a pillow. It was (cold). My feet were a little chilly but it was well worth the wait,'' Feehan said.
One Charlottetown woman who bought tickets won't even be able to go to the show. The Guardian isn't publishing her name because she bought tickets for her father as a birthday present (don't want to ruin the surprise).
"He has no idea,'' the woman said. "We grew up listening to Shania. That's how I got into country music. He has no idea (I'm buying him tickets). He is going to be so excited. I can't wait.''
According to the box office web site, the VIP section (Grandstand area) is sold out-not sure how many people they set it to hold I've heard 2,000, but I also seen something somewhere saying 4,000.... So happy I got my tickets Thursday afternoon!!
The capacity of the grounds I think they are saying is 28,000.
Province expects to recover Shania Twain concert money
Tourism Minister Robert Henderson says tax on the tickets for the Aug. 30 show will repay investment
By Ryan Ross | April 24, 2014
When it comes to the government spending money on this summer’s Shania Twain concert, Tourism Minister Robert Henderson says it expects to make it back on the tax charged on tickets.
Henderson said the government is committing $250,000 to the concert through the P.E.I. 2014 fund as a sponsor and the nine per cent portion of the HST on ticket sales will repay that investment if the show sells out.
That doesn’t include the spinoffs from visitors to the province who pay for other things like accommodations, he said.
“There’s multiplier effects that can be calculated into this so we’re just trying to keep it very simple, very basic. It’s really the ticket sales where we’ll get our money back on the tax.”
Early ticket sales for the Aug. 30 concert were swift with the almost 4,000 grandstand seats already sold out.
The concert will be held at the Charlottetown Events Grounds with a capacity of 28,000 people.
Ticket prices range from $89.50 to $179.50 and if the concert sells out that will mean about $2.8 million in revenues.
The provincial portion of the HST on those tickets would be more than $250,000.
Although the provincial government is spending $250,000 to sponsor the concert, promoter Donald K. Donald is taking on any financial risks associated with putting on the show.
The concert is one of the centrepieces of Founders Week as part of the P.E.I. 2014 celebrations.
Henderson said if the government hadn’t acted as a major sponsor the concert might not have happened in P.E.I. and the province wouldn’t get the economic benefit.
“That’s the principle behind what we’re looking at being a partner in this significant event for Founders Week and the major concert for Founders Week.”
As for the economic impact of the province’s $5-million contribution to the P.E.I. 2014 fund, Henderson said the government plans to conduct a review after the year is over.
“Obviously the political issues and the public sometimes believes it’s all about parties and concerts and good times but there are significant economic benefits to tourism in this province.”
This was just posted on the Shania in PEI Facebook page:
