'Shania Kids Can' inspired by her childhood troubles

Country music star Shania Twain is in Calgary to perform at the Stampede and to launch a local “clubhouse” of her children’s foundation.

Twain describes Shania Kids Can as a program that inspires and educates children who are having personal problems, some of which she experienced in her childhood.

"Maybe coming to school with no lunch, going to school with dirty hair or ill fitting clothes, maybe not the proper clothes for winter," she said.

“It really just weighed on my self-confidence and made me feel very insecure, and I just thought one day I will help kids like me so they never have to experience this terrible feeling.”

She visited the Calgary “clubhouse” at Catherine Nichols Gunn School on Tuesday, days ahead of her Stampede show dates on July 9 and 10.

Shania Twain Helps Struggling School Children In Canada And U.S.

Grammy- and Juno-winning country star Shania Twain is leading an initiative to help school children across Canada and the U.S. who are dealing with poverty, neglect and abuse.

As part of the "Shania Kids Can Program", the Timmins native met with principals and teachers to see how her efforts are paying off. "It's emotional for me to see the kids, meet the principals and teachers that are joining forces to make this all happen," she tells ET Canada. "I don't feel personally responsible for changing their lives but I certainly took the responsibility on myself to give back."

Like the children she seeks to help, Shania didn't have the easiest upbringing either. Her parents were unable to provide her with clean clothes or breakfast every day. She knows how missing the seemingly simple necessities of everyday life can make success and good grades seem impossible.

True to her philanthropic ideals, Shania also strives to instill her empowering principles at home with her son. "It's all the little things every day," she explains. "Humility, generosity, taking responsibility for yourself and your actions — basic principles that build good character."
