TIMMINS - Shania Twain is back.

For Timmins locals, Canadian fans and for many others in countries around the world, Twain’s brand of country-pop-rock rules.

Twain's newest release is a new retrospective CD/DVD entitled Live From Vegas, which hits store on March 3, 2015.

She will visit Canada this week to promote this new Live From Vegas package. Twain has not released a full new original album since Up in 2002. It was, and still is, a great album. But that was over 13 years ago.

It’s been way too long of a wait for the five-time Grammy and 12-time Juno Award winner's fans.

Purely to show perspective, Bruce Springsteen has released six or seven newly recorded albums and songs in the same period.

Me? Well, I’m reflecting. On what you ask? How about back to Timmins and her hometown concert on July 1, 1999?

Wow. On that day, we were feeling Timmins pride, folks, stoked and rocking in the heat of 20,000 euphoric people in the heart of Hollinger Park. It was a moment etched in time for everyone involved.

Whether you were from anywhere on the planet, or from Timmins, or Toronto, you felt that inner sense of pride about the city of Timmins and Twain.

Heck you can also go back to the Olympic torch run with Twain in January of 2010. I was standing outside in minus-35 weather with my grandson James. Yes, readers, let your mind go back to that time.

Whether you liked Twain’s music or not (and millions still do), you felt great. The truth is that particular level of pride has been missing for many years.

That civic pride, at least on the entertainment level, is one of the factors of why Timmins does not draw big name acts like Bryan Adams or The Tragically Hip.

Think of it: The Hip will be playing two hours away in Kirkland Lake this summer at the Homecoming Week concerts on June 26-27. Bryan Adams played three hours away in Sudbury. Talk about a world- class rock n’ roller who still kicks butt. He still has the passion.

Most people these days lack that ol' rock n' roll passion on many levels. For that matter, in every walk of life. Hey, I’m guilty of watching my fair share of “on demand” movies in my easy chair.

But really folks, it’s time to wake up and get back some passion.

Back in 1999, I was there to review the concert for the Timmins Daily Press. In those moments, and now as I type this, I reflect on my own and my friends' musical pasts. The days when 20 or more Timmins clubs were packed, where every musician like myself and my friends rocked away on the weekends. It was a way of life in the '70s and '80s.

Fresh from underground mining or a day in the mill you and your friends went out early to get a table at the bar. I’m sure Eilleen (Shania), who was there, remembers those days.

JP’s Lounge, The Riverview, The Rock n Tap, The Empire Hotel, The Travel Host, or The Maple Leaf, where Stompin' Tom Connors put the boot to the plywood, are among the places where legends were born in Timmins. May I remind readers that this is not fiction; it’s fact.

This Saturday, Feb. 28, Shania's Vegas show airs on the ABC and CTV TV Networks.

She says she's going to tour for the summer while EJA is off school and said she will get back at work hard on the album later this summer. She says she's not retiring but just retiring from touring and that a album will come out. So support her because I do

'I'm not retiring,' Shania Twain says of farewell tour

Country superstar Shania Twain says “it will be sad to say goodbye” to performing on stage when her summer farewell tour ends, but she wants her fans to know she will not stop making music.

Twain surprised fans earlier this week when she announced that her upcoming “Rock This Country” tour will be her last. The 48-city tour kicks off in June and includes stops in Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

Twain acknowledged Thursday that the decision to stop touring was “big,” but said it was something she had been considering.

“It’s been coming for a little while,” Twain told CTV’s Canada AM. “So it’s not sudden for me.”

In fact, Twain thought that her two-year residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, which wrapped up last December, would mark her last public performances.

However, the stint “went by so fast and I wanted to make it last a little longer.

“This summer will be the perfect farewell and the perfect time for me to say goodbye to the stage,” she said.

“I’ll be sad to say goodbye, it will be an emotional time.”

The tour will be an entirely different show than what fans saw in Vegas and was captured on a new DVD released this week, she said.

The show will be “a little bit of a party” as the 49-year-old celebrates her career.

“It’s going to be a rockin’ show, a party atmosphere,” Twain said, adding that she wants to “get into the audience as much as I can.”

Meanwhile, Twain wants to reassure fans that although she is retiring from the stage, she won’t stop making music.

She is recording a new album, which will be put on hold for the tour. She will resume recording after the summer, she said.

“I’m not retiring by any means,” Twain said. “I’ve got so much to do musically.”

The photo of Shania with the ice horse was taken in Yorkville, Toronto. They had an ice sculpture festival a couple of weeks ago, and as it has been so very cold, they haven't melted yet. Yorkville is Toronto's nicest neighbourhood.

Born Eileen Edwards, Shania Twain changed her name to Shania meaning ‘On My Way’ in Ojibwa.
Shania wrote her first song at the young age of 10-years-old. The song was titled “Mama Won’t you Come Out to Play” and was written about Shania’s relationship with her mother.
Though Shania has not been to space, her songs sure have! Shania’s song UP! was used as a wake up call in space for Canadian astronaut Dave Williams in 2007.
Shania’s album, Come on Over has sold over 40 million copies worldwide.

WATCH: Shania Twain vows to make music again after farewell tour

TORONTO — Shania Twain surprised fans this week when she said her Rock This Country tour will be her last.

On Friday, the Canadian superstar insisted quitting the road doesn’t mean she’s quitting music.

“I’m not retiring from music by any means,” Twain said, “but this is it for the stage.”

Appearing on Global’s The Morning Show, Twain said she planned to stop performing live once her two-year residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas came to an end last December.

“I was going to hang my hat up at the end of that but that experience motivated me to carry on,” she explained. “It didn’t do what I expected. I thought I would be exhausted at the end of that and just relieved and ready to hang it up then but I want to carry on.

“I will carry on but I have had it in my mind for a long time to finish the stage career.”

Twain’s spectacular show at Caesars has been immortalized in a CD+DVD package called Still the One: Live from Vegas.

The 49-year-old singer said performing more than 100 shows in Las Vegas gave her the confidence to sing in front of crowds again.

“Las Vegas was this mountain challenge that I put in front of myself. It was my way of pushing myself forward,” she explained. “I felt I needed to do something shocking to snap me out of my insecurities. Going through all the personal things, I was just not confident enough to get out and do my thing again.

“I felt setting a really big challenge would shake that up, take me outside of my comfort zone and just dive in. But Vegas turned out to be a transition for me and a launching pad to just carry on and do other things.”

Touring, though, is very different than performing night after night in the same venue. Twain said she’s ready to take on the challenges of being on the road.

“Even though the [Vegas] show was a huge undertaking, that security and safety and consistency made me feel very comfortable,” she said. “But through the whole experience I built my confidence back up and I’m ready for all those variables, I’m ready for the spontaneity, and I’m just ready to get out there and have a more freestyle show.”

What’s the one thing she has to have on tour?

“Sleep,” Twain replied. “Touring is very tiring. Being able to get enough sleep is a challenge.”

If Twain misses anything about Vegas, it’s Nobu inside Caesars Palace.

“It’s so good there. They have this Bibb lettuce salad… it is to die for. It’s incredible. The dressing is outrageous,” she gushed. “They don’t always have it because it’s quite a special lettuce that they use and they only have so many a day. I have to call ahead and say ‘Make sure you have that salad, I need that salad after the show!'”

On The Morning Show, Twain also shared the last concert she attended, her favourite recent movie and how she unwinds. She also said she is writing new songs and working on a new album — her first since 2002’s Up!.

One thing is clear: Twain is in a good place.

“Like everybody else I’ve had my lows all through my life, some pretty dramatic ones,” she admitted. What keeps her going? “It’s the survivor in me. I can only get so low and then I’m gasping for air and I’m fighting my way back to the top for that air.

“I guess if I get into a state of desperation I fight — and that’s just the survivor in me.”

Shania Twain still pinching herself after decades of success, she tells etalk

Shania Twain's upcoming Rock This Country tour may be her last, but after her two year Vegas residency the Canadian country music star says she can't wait to get out on the road.

"The Las Vegas show was such a big spectacle and this giant challenge and a mountain I had to climb to even get back on stage again," she tells Ben Mulroney in a two-part etalk first interview. "By the end of that show, after two years, I started to think, I can't end this way. I've got to get out on the road. I've got to get on the road!"

The 48-city tour kicks off June 5 in Seattle, WA, and includes stops in nine Canadian cities.

Now 49-years-old, Twain has come a long way since growing up in Timmins, Ont. Her many career accomplishments include selling 75 million records and winning five Grammys. Still, she has moments of disbelief at her success.

"It's very hard to believe that I started where I started and ended up where I ended up," she says. "I always had a strong idea of what I wanted to do and who I wanted to be... but to be able to anticipate, no. To me it was impossible... I have to pinch myself everyday."

Shania Twain Talks Last Tour And Staying True To Herself With ET Canada

She's sold over 75 million albums around the world and remains the best-selling female artist in the history of country music, Shania Twain is taking over the ET Canada environment tonight in a no holds barred interview with Roz Weston.

Before Shania embarks on her final North American tour ever, the country legend opens up about retiring from the stage, new music and how staying true to herself has made her the artist she is today.

Hot off the heels of her Rock This Country tour announcement, we had to find out - is Shania ready to say goodbye?

"I don't think I'm saying goodbye," Shania tells Roz. " I'm not quitting the industry. I'm not retiring from my career. I'm just ready to put my energy into, different places for my career and to do a final tour."

Shania continues, telling Roz that it's not so much coming to grips with saying goodbye to her fans from the stage as it is trying to compile a final tour set list.

"That is a hard one, because someone always says ‘Why didn't you play that song? Where's that one?’" Adding, "So the summer tour will have a few songs that the Vegas show did not have, but that means those songs won't be in the concert show. So you know, I'll just mix it up."

In case you won't be able to get out to see Shania's stage farewell, don't fret, the country singer is giving fans a look at some of her favourite performances with the release of her new CD/DVD "Shania: Still The One, Live From Vegas".

Twain tells Roz that for future new music, she's staying true to her roots.

"I just can't even believe that I'm here," she says. "All of it really does shock me sometimes when I think about where I started and where I am, and I'm just always catching up with myself it seems, which is good, I hope I never do."

"It feels a bit like yesterday," Shania says. "It's like the nightmare that never goes away," she adds, of those memories of schlepping cords and piling into a van.

"As an entertainer, it's easy to get caught up in the way you look and the whole image of yourself," she continues. Adding that she'd tell her 20-year-old self to "stay true to yourself," because "there's a risk" of forgetting who you are.

"It's interesting looking back," the "Still The One" singer tells Roz. "I never forget. I think that's also part of not losing yourself along the way, not getting too caught up in who you're supposed to be and the image of everything."

"I never really knew I was going to make it and you can never prepare for what it is to make it."

Only because it's Shania, I went out and bought the BluRay.. So now I have that to add to my collection, and the portability of that, and I also have it on all computers & devices so I have the portability of that! "I was ready to be behind the scenes and create it from the bottom up," the "Any Man Of Mine" singer says of her stint at Caesars.

"Getting back up on stage again, I needed to understand the whole nuts and bolts and be involved in the beginning so that I was really comfortable with the platform when I got out the first night. I studied for my exam is what I’m saying."

She studied then slayed, night after night. The performance included multiple costume changes, live horses and a whole lot of fringe.

"I have adopted a whole new attitude because of (the show)," the singer tells McGuire. "It was a good lesson for me, not to hesitate so much. Sometimes you just gotta do it, you gotta jump."

And so the singer is jumping into a whole new adventure—the "Shania Rock This Country Tour."

"When the show was closing in Las Vegas I said I needed to end my touring career with that excitement with that atmosphere so that was decision to go on the road," Twain says.

"The tour is a celebration of what I had achieved in Las Vegas of getting back on stage in the first place, realizing that I could sing again. Now that I can sing again, I know I’m going to make another record."

Say what?! A new record? Apparently so. The singer is busy writing and laying down tracks in the studio. (I think I heard 50 Cent use the slogan "laying down track" once. So here it is.)

More leopard, more fringe, more Shania, please!
