Shania Twain Says Her New Album Is 'Soul Music'

Shania Twain Says Her New Album Is ‘Soul Music’ and Wants to Duet with Nick Jonas

It is a more soulful approach to my songwriting then I’ve probably ever allowed myself.

By Annie Reuter | March 5, 2015 9:15 AM

It looks like 2015 will be a very good year for Shania Twain fans.

For starters, Twain just announced her Rock This Country Tour, which will also serve as her farewell tour. In addition, as she tells Radio.com, she’s got a new album in the works.

The two, however, are separate projects. As Twain explains, she won’t be playing any of her new material on the road.

“I want everyone to hear the hits,” she tells Radio.com. “When I go to a show I want to hear songs that I know. So I won’t be introducing any of the new songs from the new music in this concert.”

Which isn’t to discount her excitement for the new music she’s working on. “The songs are going great,” she says enthusiastically. “I’ve been putting them together for a really long time now. They’ve been whirling around in my head, so I’ve got a pile of things, way too much for one album.”

While Twain says she’s in the studio and the “record is on its way,” she explains that it’s difficult to vividly describe and categorize the sound of the new material.

“It’s hard for me to put my finger on it; I don’t know how to explain it,” she confesses. “One of the producers involved, we were talking about how to describe it in words and he said, ‘This is soul. This is soul music.’”

Twain wouldn’t reveal the producer she’s working with, but she did agree with his ‘soulful’ explanation.

“It’s not like my music was ever traditional anyway. I don’t think anybody expects that from me. Nothing that I’m doing is traditional,” she says. “Certainly, as I reflect back on listening to this stuff, it reminds me a lot of the influences that I had growing up. There’s influences from my childhood in the music that I’m writing now.”

The country singer says she hears hints of artists like Emmylou Harris, Gladys Knight, Roy Orbison and Glen Campbell in the music she has been writing more recently.

“It is a more soulful approach to my songwriting then I’ve probably ever allowed myself to have before,” she admits. “It’s fun music, too. I like to stay positive. I’ll make sure that I do some things on there that make you feel good and happy as well. I’m having a lot of fun.”

Since current country radio has seen a shortage of female airplay lately, we wonder which contemporary country women Twain enjoys listening to. The first artist she names is Miranda Lambert.

“I love female voices. I just heard Miranda Lambert singing ‘Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under’ the other day [at Dierks Bentley’s Hot Country Knights showcase] and that was so cool,” she says. “That was a really cool compliment. She was having so much fun, and I thought, 'Wow'. I could hear a lot of these voices singing my music.’”

She continues: “I think once I get my own record done I’m going to start pulling out some of the songs that I may not get to and start getting together with other female artists just to hear my songs sung by them. I don’t always need to be the singer of everything that I write.”

Twain has fans in every genre of music. For instance, Nick Jonas recently admitted to us that she was his first celebrity crush, and that he saw her Las Vegas residency.

So, would she ever team up with a pop artist like Jonas for a duet?

“I’d love to do that. I’d have a great time doing that actually,” she says immediately. “I will consider that. I’ll have to call him.”

The idea of a Twain-Jonas collaboration isn’t really that big of a stretch, either. “My music has definitely had a cross-genre life,” she says. “I’ve gotten to know a lot of pop artists over the years, and we share a lot in common, regardless of what genre we’re in. I certainly would enjoy an experience like that.”

Shania Twain on New Music: 'It's a More Soulful Me'

Posted Monday, March 9th 2015 @ 6pm

Shania Twain’s putting some soul in her first new tunes in more than a decade. The global megastar exclusively reveals how her “very personal” new music will surprise her longtime fans.

“I think maybe it’s just a more soulful me,” Shania says during a phone call with Cody. “It’s more introspective ‘cause I’ve had so much time to reflect over the last years that I’m putting all that into my lyrics. Even the mood of the melodies and the chord progressions are a bit more reflective.”

While the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer anticipates the music to be sonically soulful, there are still a lot of questions she’s yet to answer regarding her first new studio album since 2002’s Up!.

“I don’t know how they’re going to turn out. There are some ballads I think I might make more up-tempo, for example. I’m still in the stage of experimenting with the ideas. They’re not evolved enough for me to say exactly what it’s going to be in the end,” Shania says.

No word when she’ll drop new music. Shania will kick off her Rock This Country tour June 5 in Seattle, Wash.

"As Twain explains, she won’t be playing any of her new material on the road."“I want everyone to hear the hits,” she tells Radio.com. “When I go to a show I want to hear songs that I know. So I won’t be introducing any of the new songs from the new music in this concert.”

These sentences. This sums up what I have been saying. She is very insecure about her new music. No other artist releases new music and does not play it on the road EVER. She says this will be her last tour. Then she says she will release a new record. And thus, she will never perform those songs on the road. She doesn't think these new songs on the new record will be hits. This is her mental problem in a nutshell and why she has taken so long to release new music. Instead of releasing new songs. Waiting for the hits to come and THEN touring she is chickening out. Playing it safe. Just like in Vegas. Coasting on the old hits from two decades ago.

God is her state of mind sad. I thought she was such a kick *ass tough chick. I was wrong. It was just an image she created.

I soooo agree with you Butters. And I Don't know why she's so insecure. She proved all her life to be capable of great things, right off her teens when basically she kept together her family and especially after the death of her parents.
She should be proud of herself and of all the things she accomplished.
I guess they're right: money Don't make you happy.

Her insecurities make her even more likeable and human. I'm a bigger fan of her since the autobiography and the Why Not series.

When did she say she isn't proud? I must have missed something lol.
And she seems to be very happy in her private life.

It looks like she doesn't care about making hits and being on top of the charts anymore. If she would care about it she would put out a mainstream pop trash album and try to compete with the likes of Taylor Swift.
I was afraid she would do that and I'm so glad she isn't. In another interview she said "The music will be “soulful … I don’t know if the public will consider it the best work I’ve ever done, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done."

Quality music is not the kind of music that reaches the top of the charts.

Shania Twain on Women in Country: 'We Could Use Fresh Blood'

CMT Radio Live with Cody Alan | March 17, 2015

The woman in her needs more women in country music!

Shania Twain is speaking out about the great female debate in the format and exclusively telling Cody the time for new women in country music is now.

“There are certainly are a lot of male singers right now, aren’t there? We can always use more female singers, of course,” she says. “There have been a lot [of female singers] certainly come out since I was in my key moment of my career, and they’ve all been just really strong, super talented women. They haven’t gone anywhere… We probably just need to be hearing more of them. And yeah, we could use fresh, new blood.”

The “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer tells Canadian magazine Macleans women are the “greater risk-takers” of the genre.

“Women have a lot to say, but it takes a lot of courage to say it,” she adds. “When they step out of what’s expected in this genre, they are really stepping in the line of fire.”

Shania will bring her courage to the stage when the Rock This Country tour, her first in more than a decade, kicks off June 5 in Seattle, Wash.

Hi,

I'm telling you that the difference between what she writes alone and the writing and the music she made with Mutt will be like the difference between night and day.  Just compare the two songs Any Man of Mine and This Man of Mine and you will understand.  What she wrote with Mutt was written more from a man's prospective and harder less emotional edge.  Her writing is written from a woman's perspective and is more emotional.  I know time has passed and her writing style has changed over the years but Mutt had a huge influence on the final product.  The new stuff will be total Shania and I do not think it will sound anything like what it did with Mutt.  She's afraid that we won't like just her stuff without Mutt's influence so she can cover herself by saying she is not performing anymore live so that she doesn't have to risk too much criticism if the album is not successful... she doesn't have to prove anything to anyone but herself and she is afraid to do that.  Her prior success was a phenomenal not many people could top or equal that no matter who they are...so there should be no shame or guilt in admitting that but she is big time scared of the criticism she knows will come.   I myself can not wait to hear the new stuff as I think it will be closer to who she really is as an artist.  Just go back and listen to the albums she did without Mutt and the writing, the lyrics it's so different...not even close...I really like it all myself.  I will support whatever it sounds like...she's an amazing artist and songwriter without Mutt she always has been and Mutt knew that or he would not have looked twice at her.  He knew before it all started what he had in her and how use that to mold her into what he wanted now it is her time to be out of his mold and be her own artist and she is scared who wouldn't be?  We are nothing but a society of critics and a**holes with opinions and judgments that we do not keep to ourselves even though we all live in glass houses and should not be throwing stones at others.  I hope her new work blows everyone away and that it is a huge success so that she can say she did it for her own piece of mind and feel good and put some of those insecurities to rest in that regard.

Just my thoughts biggrin

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto
