Age will never prevent Shania Twain from pursuing new endeavors. Fresh off filming the reality TV talent show Real Country, the 53-year-old is moving on to the film world. However, Twain may have more on her mind!

“Taking chances and being out of the comfort zone is really something that I’m enjoying,” Twain told Billboard. “It’s the way I live my life. I know what it’s like to be rejected — I definitely had a hard time when I first started out. I just feel like an inner strength and feel stronger when I’m taking on new challenges — I feel motivated by challenge. It’s exciting, it’s fun.”

“I’ve done a few interesting things out of my comfort zone the last few years, like acting, and now with Real Country,” Twain said. “Okay, I’m taking on this mission, and all I really have is passion behind it, and a great audience out there to connect with.”

Video: Trading Paint Movie Trailer And Editorial Synopsis

By Bobby Kimbrough | OneDirt.com | February 1, 2019

The movie trailer for an upcoming John Travolta feature that centers around dirt track racing was released last week. The synopsis for Trading Paint was released by the production companies – no less than 6 production companies are listed – explains the movie in a nutshell: Veteran race car driver Sam Munroe and his son, a fellow driver from a small town overcome family and professional conflicts, balancing competition, ego, resentment and a racing nemesis to come out stronger on the other side.

Here’s what we get from the preview: Father is a local hero with past success on the regional dirt tracks. He retires from racing when the son is old enough to race. They win some races and continue to operate the family garage. They start to flounder at the track and have a fight when the son opts to drive for the villain. The Father breaks out his old fire suit and competes against the son for a championship. The black helmet wearing dad crashes into the white helmet wearing son, who is knocked out. Dad pulls son from the wreck and realizes their relationship is more important than any glory on the track. Both recover and live happily ever after – and are richer for the experience. The end.

If you think this sounds familiar, it probably is. Substitute Ralph Earnhardt in place of Sam Munroe and you have the first three-quarters of the movie 3: The Dale Earnhardt Story. The movie’s plot seems to be predictable after watching the trailer, and it leaves many wondering if they even need to see the full movie.

It is true that you may have seen the entire movie in the extended trailer, but most of us at OneDirt.com urge drt track racers to keep an open mind about the film and maybe even watch it at the theater. This movie just may bring fans to the sport much like Days of Thunder did for NASCAR. After all, exposure for the sport is not a bad thing.

The second reason for watching the film is Shania Twain. The odd pairing of Canadian singer Twain with a mid-60s John Travolta to play a mature good ol’ southern couple seems strange, but Travolta pulled off the Urban Cowboy pairing with Debra Winger successfully. Even at 53 years old, Shania is worth watching. The Canadian background can be ignored because … well, err … because Nashville. Duh!

Cast:

  • John Travolta as Sam
  • Toby Sebastian as Cam
  • Shania Twain as Becca
  • Michael Madsen as Linsky
  • Rosabell Laurenti Sellers as Cindy
  • Kevin Dunn as Stumpy
  • Barry Corbin as Sheriff Buck Taylor

Fun Facts:

There is a character in the movie named Sheriff Buck Taylor. There is also an actor Buck Taylor that plays the role of Ben in the movie.

Aspiring actress Jen Baker plays the role of “Track Girl.” This is not the first time Baker has played an unnamed role in a movie. She has appeared as “Fan Girl” in Bigger, “HR Girl” in Office Uprising, and will show up as “Hot Girl” in the future release Branded.

The movie is filmed in Hueytown and Bessemer Alabama. Hueytown, Alabama is the hometown of Nascar’s, Alabama Gang.

John Travolta & Michael Madsen played the Vega brothers in the Quentin Tarantino films. John Travolta played Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction & Michael Madsen played Vic Vega in Reservoir Dogs.

Rosabell Laurenti Sellers (Cindy) and Toby Sebastian (Cam) previously starred as cousins in the award-winning series Game of Thrones.

The single best reason to watch Trading Paint: Shania Twain.

The movie’s limited release is scheduled for theaters on March 22, 2019. It is scheduled to be on disc and streaming on February 22, 2019. The published runtime is 88 minutes for this Ambi Pitctures action and adventure film.

"Trading Paint" will be released online this Friday, February 22. I checked my DirecTV on-screen program guide and neither Shania or John have any upcoming interviews to promote the movie in the next week or so. I assume they will do a couple interviews closer to the movie's theater release on March 22. There will also probably be a red carpet premiere for the movie that week.

Shania Twain Stars Opposite John Travolta in New Movie “Trading Paint”

By Lisa Konicki | One Country | February 19, 2019

Shania Twain is starring in her first major motion picture, Trading Paint, and it’s opposite John Travolta. Talk about pressure.

Shania plays Becca, John’s love interest. John plays Sam, a veteran race car driver, who has a conflict with his son. In an interview with ET Canada, Shania sat down with John to talk about filming and their camaraderie behind the scenes.

“It’s fun and it just feels really natural for me. I thought I was going to be really intimidated,” Shania said of acting. “I was unexpectedly, I guess surprisingly comfortable. I know that has a lot to do with John.”

IMDB shares the movie’s synopsis as, Veteran race car driver Sam Munroe (Travolta) and his son, a fellow driver from a small town overcome family and professional conflicts, balancing competition, ego, resentment and a racing nemesis to come out stronger on the other side.

The movie stars John, Shania, Toby Sebastian, Michael Madsen and Kevin Dunn.

With the movie behind them, perhaps there will be more collaborations between John and Shania, like a musical collaboration?

“I wanted to do a duet album with him years ago,” Shania told ET. The time is now Shania, the time is now.

Trading Paint hits theaters Friday, February 22. (I don't know why all these articles say in theaters February 22.)

On The Set Of ‘Trading Paint’ With Shania Twain And John Travolta

By Rachel West | ET Canada | October 25, 2017

Shania Twain is gearing up for her big screen feature film debut with a little help from her veteran co-star John Travolta.

“I think Shania is born to be on film,” the “Grease” actor tells ET Canada’s Matte Babel. “Her videos say that. Her videos are a knockout but I think this is such a beautiful role.”

ET Canada was on the set of “Trading Paint” in Alabama where Twain says acting feels totally natural to her.

“Well, it’s fun and it feels really natural,” the Grammy-winning Canadian superstar says, adding being on set with Travolta helped calm her nerves. “I thought I was going to be really intimidated.”

In the drama, two-time Oscar nominee Travolta stars as Sam, a veteran race car driver who learns to balance ego, family drama, personal relationships and competitive nature with his racing son. Cast as Sam’s girlfriend Becca, acting newcomer Twain says she was totally in awe of her co-star’s skills.

“Just watching him in the moment, this guy cries on the spot! Is this guy for real or what?! I am just really amazed,” she tells ET Canada. But she’s not the only singer on the set. Twain reveals Travolta “sings on the spot all the time.” Does this mean there’s a future duet between the two in the works?

“I didn’t reveal the little secret that we are thinking about doing a duet,” Travolta says. “‘I told him I was looking at you, she looked gorgeously beautiful,’ this song came right into my head, this is between takes. Shania said, “I love that song. That would be a good duet.'” “I wanted to do a duet album with him years ago,” Twain confirms.

Naturally, being on a movie set surrounded by cars makes the 63-year-old actor think of his “Grease” days.

“Music is a big part of my life and I miss doing it and, of course, if I want to have an effect on others I will break out into a familiar song,” Travolta teases. “I thought if I broke into ‘Grease Lightning’, I bet it would cause a very good effect.” And he was right: “I did the whole thing, the whole crew went crazy, it was the perfect set up!”

It looks like most movies on iTunes cost $14.99 or $19.99 to buy. And if it has the option to rent it (2 days), it's either $3.99 or $5.99.

Shania lands acting role in "Trading Paint" movie - Feb. 22 online | March 22 theaters | May 21 DVD

Want to see ‘Trading Paint'? Head to iTunes on Friday

By Mary Colurso | AL.com | February 21, 2019

“Trading Paint,” a racing movie that was mostly filmed in Alabama, is set for release on Friday, but it’s unclear if or when audiences will be able to see it in theaters here.

The movie will be released to ultra VOD (video on demand) on Feb. 22, and can be seen on iTunes, according to the Instagram page for Saban Films. A limited release is planned for theaters on March 22, along with on-demand services. There’s no information yet on how many theaters will screen the film in March, or where those theaters will be.

Movie lovers in the state will have to adopt a wait-and-see attitude if they want the big-screen experience. Actually, they’ve been waiting since “Trading Paint” completed its principal photography in the Birmingham metro area in August and September 2017.

John Travolta stars in the movie, which filmed at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga and various locations in Hueytown, Hoover, Bessemer and elsewhere in the Birmingham metro area. Travolta portrays a veteran dirt-track driver who has a tense relationship with his son, an ambitious driver played by Toby Sebastian, best known as Trystane Martell on HBO’s “Game of Thrones."

Here’s the storyline of “Trading Paint,” according to IMDB:

“When their winning streak begins to fail, legendary father and son racing duo Sam (John Travolta) and Cam (Toby Sebastian) have a falling out. A rival racing giant takes advantage of this rift and offers Cam a lucrative opportunity racing for the adversary. Cam accepts and the gap between father and son grows even bigger. Engines rev and sparks fly as the two are set against each other in an ultimate high stakes race and the most dangerous competition between father and son.”

The cast also includes Shania Twain, Michael Madsen and Kevin Dunn. Extras and background actors from Alabama were hired for the filming, and Scott Daniel of Hueytown was among the crew members, working as a graphic designer for the production.

Originally, “Trading Paint” was set for release in June 2018, but that date was pushed back to 2019. A trailer for the film was released in January.

Some independent film companies have been using ultra VOD -- that is, releasing their projects online first -- to market their movies and create buzz before the theatrical release dates.

The movie was directed by Karzan Kader and written by Gary Gerani and Craig R. Welch.

Travolta returned to the Birmingham area in 2018 for the filming of “Moose,” a thriller directed and co-written by Fred Durst, the former Limp Bizkit frontman. One of the producers for “Trading Paint,” Oscar Generale, also was a producer for “Moose.”

“Since when I have arrived in Alabama, I felt a super positive energy here; places are amazing!” Generale told AL.com in a 2018 email interview. “I love the people here. I love the restaurants, too. The choice of filming 'Trading Paint’ and ‘Moose’ here is because of the perfect locations you can find.”

The movie will be in theaters and available On Demand on March 22nd.

“Trading Paint” was filmed on location in Hueytown, Bessemer, Birmingham and other places in Alabama including Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga. It stars John Travolta, Toby Sebastian, Shania Twain, Michael Madsen, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, and Kevin Dunn. It was directed by Karzan Kader, written by Craig R. Welch, Greg Gerani, and produced by Alberto Burgueño, Alexandra Klim, Andrea Ievolino, and Silvio Muraglia.

A down and out stock car racing legend (John Travolta) is drawn back to the dirk track when his son (Toby Sebastian), an aspiring driver, joins a rival racing team, which sparks an intense and dangerous competition between father and son.

After a failed race due to shoddy equipment causes a rift in a legacy racing duo led by Sam and his 20-year-old son Cam, alternate career options become more attractive to the young racer. As the father of a baby girl and husband to a beautiful wife, Cindy, Cam longs for a brighter future for his family as well as his career. Rival racing giant Bob Linsky (Michael Madsen) presents a path to this reality for Cam, forcing him to confront his place within his family’s racing history and the place of his own life.

Sam is off the old school; he values strategy and sportsmanship in racing. He urges his son to race with integrity and berates him when he feels that hasn’t been done. Cam, on the other hand, wants to win. It’s all he thinks about, and he’s willing to do anything on the track to get him closer. This difference in values amplifies the generational gap between the two and leads to conflict when Cam reveals that he has agreed to race for Linsky.

Family trauma is resurrected as Sam larks on the family’s lives before the death of Cam’s mother years prior. These memories begin to haunt Sam just as tensions between him and his son increase; after Cam and his brand new car beat Sam and his clunker in a casual race, he finds himself bereft of a racecar and on worse terms with his son. Sam leans on his girlfriend Becca (Shania Twain) in response.

The tables begin to turn as Sam takes first place in the first races of the season. During the third race, an accident causes Cam’s car to collide with Sam’s, sending his son flipping down the racetrack. In the hospital, Sam learns that Cam will never walk again due to the crash. The two reconcile after Cam apologizes and Sam affirms his love and support for his son. As the final race approaches, Sam announces his retirement. Cam, too, is out of the races, but not for long as he begins to regain feeling in his toes. Soon he’s racing again, against his former boss Bob Linsky. Cam is triumphant in this final race, and thanks to his father heartily in his acceptance speech.

Karzan Kader directed TRADING PAINT from a screenplay written by Craig Welch and Gary Gerani. AMBI Pictures and Paradox studios fully financed and produced the film. Production began in Alabama mid-August 2017. The dirt track races were filmed at the Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama.

Producers Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi said that this film required an actor with incredible range, as the story of TRADING PAINT is rooted in the high-speed danger of dirt track racing, but it’s also a story that is very much character driven. “For something that requires this type of range, you better have an actor who can deliver, and we have one of the all-time greats in John Travolta, who we are very excited to work with,” Monika Bacardi stated. “There is nothing John cannot do, and he proves this time and time again with every project he’s involved in.”

“This was John’s first time racing on a dirt track,” said Iervolino. “He put in the time to train and proved he was a natural. We put him out there with other professional dirt track racers as well for some of the scenes, and he really held his own. Talladega is an inspiring location to film, and you can feel the history and grit of the track. It’ll inspire any driver who gets out on it.”

John Travolta brought a fun, lively atmosphere to set. Country music sensation, Shania Twain, who plays Travolta’s girlfriend in the film, stated that she thought she was going to be really intimidated going onto set, but it ended up being a lot of fun. “It feels really natural for me,” she said. “I wasn’t nervous at all. I was surprisingly comfortable. And I know that has a lot to do with John." Travolta spoke highly of Shania, saying “I think Shania is born to be on film. Her videos say that. I mean, come on. Her videos are a knockout!”

Shania Twain isn’t the only singer on set – she revealed that Travolta “sings on the spot all the time.”

"Of course if I want to create an effect on others, I will break out into a familiar song,” Travolta laughs. “For instance, these cars [on the dirt track] are all lined up, and there's a bunch of guys and girls around the cars, and I'm in front of them, and I thought, if I broke out into Greased Lightning right now, I bet it would cause a very good effect. So I did the whole thing... well the whole crew, everyone went crazy. It was the perfect set up."

Iervolino praised Travolta's talent and demeanor on set: “Having someone as talented and driven as John on set really lends itself to the story,” he says. “He’s very powerful in his scenes and his chemistry with the other actors is so natural and effortless. It really makes this story come to life in ways we couldn’t have predicted.”

John Travolta Romances Shania Twain in Scene from Trading Paint — Her First Movie!

By Alexia Fernandez | PEOPLE | February 26, 2019

John Travolta is sharing a candlelight dinner with Shania Twain.

In a PEOPLE exclusive clip from the upcoming film Trading Paint, the 65-year-old actor stars as Sam Munroe, a veteran race car driver, who romances Twain’s Becca as they discuss his passion for racing.

“Tell me about your hobby,” Becca asks Sam. Confused, he asks her, “Hobby?”

“Yeah, racing,” she says.

Shaking his head and laughing, Sam explains his drive for racing is deeply rooted and goes beyond that of a hobby.

“Hell no. Racing ain’t no hobby. It’s more like a family tradition.”

The film follows Sam and his son, Cam, through their falling out. A rival racing giant, Linsky, takes advantage of the rift and offers Cam a lucrative opportunity racing for him.

Michael Madsen stars as Linsky and is joined by fellow cast members Barry Corbin, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, Kevin Dunn and Toby Sebastian.

And for country superstar Twain, 53, this marks her acting debut. In January she shared the trailer for her first film excitedly on Instagram, saying, “I can’t wait for you all to see this.”

Trading Paint is available on Ultra VOD and in theaters and On Demand on March 22.

"Trading Paint" - Review

By Lee Satterfield | Stomp and Stammer | February 27, 2019

John Travolta is constantly being crapped on by the majority of the entertainment media, not only for his “bad acting” but also for his odd/questionable projects (most recently Gotti and Speed Kills) and within the last year he stated that Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit fame) was one of the best directors that he has ever worked with. Let’s face it: negative trash/spin is much easier to write about, attracts more readers, and sells more ad space, especially in the social media age (where media companies are looking for “likes,” “shares” and “retweets” more than anything else). Travolta’s latest starring role, a yarn about the sport and business of late-model dirt track auto racing, is another weird pick/low-budget offering from the actor. But having said that, Travolta brings his “A Game” to this film and so does the supporting cast of Michael Madsen, Toby Sebastian, Shania Twain (in her first full length movie), and prolific character actors Kevin Dunn and Barry Corbin (who also played a sheriff character in the low-budget 1980 Kenny Rogers’ stock car racing movie Six Pack). It’s a well written, directed, and filmed movie, especially for its tiny budget… well, in spite of a rather ridiculous/silly ending too. It’s refreshing to see a movie produced about a different/interesting/niche subject matter like dirt track racing, something that’s dying out culturally across America. The movie, only available on VOD demand currently, is slated for a limited theatrical release in March, and is sure to become a cult classic as time goes on.

Movie Watch: Trading Paint

By Edward Havens | FilmJerk.com | March 4, 2019

Continuing our desire to highlight upcoming independent and foreign films we think you should be aware of, we look at the latest movie featuring two-time Academy Award nominee John Travolta.

Now, a new movie featuring John Travolta might not mean as much to film fans now as it may have during his “Saturday Night Fever” to “Blow Out” run, or his mid-90s “Pulp Fiction” to “A Civil Action” resurgence, but every once in a while, it’s nice to see Travolta put in what seems to be some effort in to a role. But that’s not even the exciting part about this movie.

Are you ready for this?

Are you sitting down?

Trading Paint is the acting debut of the Queen of Country herself, Shania Twain.

Ka-ching!

It’s hard to believe that while being in the public consciousness for more than a quarter century, that Ms. Twain has never once been featured as an actor on any television show or movie before now. She has damn near 40 “acting” credits on the IMDb, and on 39 of them (all but two being her music videos) she’s playing Shania Twain. So this little fact, that this superstar with far more talent than a Jessica Simpson or a Britney Spears is finally moving in to the field of cinematic acting, is something to be celebrated. And judging from this clip from the film, she might not be asked to do too much but she is simply radiant on screen...

Yes, that really is New Jersey native John Travolta looking like Jon Stewart trying out to replace Andrew Lincoln on “The Walking Dead” while sounding like he has Willie Nelson’s vocal cords grafted on top of his. At least he’s making an attempt to create a character out of his wheelhouse.

The film, currently available on Ultra VOD before opening at the Cinema Village in New York City and the Rolling Hills 20 in Torrance CA on March 22nd, features Mr. Travolta as veteran race car driver Sam Munroe, a former professional race car driver, who must overcome family and professional conflicts after his son Cam (Toby Sebastian) leaves their racing team for a competitor (Michael Madsen), balancing ego, resentment and a racing nemesis to come out stronger on the other side. In addition to Ms. Twain, the film also stars Barry Corbin and Kevin Dunn.

Directed by Karzan Kader (whose 2010 short “Bekas” was a Silver Medal winner at the 2011 Student Academy Awards), Saban Films’ “Trading Paint” will also be available on demand March 22nd.

Watch the full trailer below.

***So now we know of two theaters that will be showing "Trading Paint" which opens in select theaters March 22. The previously announced Cinema Village in New York City and now Rolling Hills 20 in Torrance, California. I wonder if that's it?

Gone in 60 minutes! No seats left for Travolta’s free screenings

John Travolta and the Ocala Film Foundation are hosting two free screenings of ‘Trading Paint’ in downtown Ocala, Florida

By Dave Schlenker | Ocala StarBanner | March 9, 2019

“Trading Paint,” rated R, stars Travolta as Sam Munroe, a veteran dirt-track driver who gets back behind the wheel amid some testy moments with his son, also a driver. The film features some high-intensity racing, and Travolta said he did his own driving in the film. Starring as Munroe’s love interest is Travolta’s longtime friend, Grammy Award-winning country-pop singer Shania Twain (the two met in Marion County when Twain was here to buy a horse).

Travolta, who lives in Anthony with his family, knows there are a lot of racing fans in Marion County. He said he wanted to provide a fun, free and accessible movie night for locals.

“The whole idea is to have popcorn and soda and have them enjoy it in a proper theater,” Travolta said last week. “It’s so good. I’m very proud of it. It goes to show that when you do something that is of personal interest to you, there’s always something about it that shines a bit more.”

The screenings were Travolta’s idea. The Ocala Film Foundation, a nonprofit that knows a thing or two about film screenings at the Marion Theatre, worked with the actor’s staff to organize the event.

“He did not want it to be a big red carpet event. He did not want it to be about him,” said Angie Lewis, the film foundation’s president.

OFF set up an Eventbrite site so people could reserve their free tickets. But the tickets were gone before OFF could post the link on their own social media sites.

On Saturday, Lewis said she knew the screenings would do well, but she said she was surprised — blown away, really — when the tickets disappeared so fast.

In addition to renting out the theater for the screenings and buying the popcorn, Travolta is donating $2,500 to the film foundation’s classroom scholarship program. The foundation awards $7,500 in grants each year; the money is divided among two high school seniors and two classrooms, which use the funds for film projects or equipment, Lewis said.

Since moving to Marion County in 2003, Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, have hosted several red carpet movie premieres in Ocala that have raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities. And while the two stars take time to greet the general public on the red carpet, Travolta realizes not everyone can afford the events at the end of those red carpets. So he made a point to fund other film-related events for broader local audiences.

In 2010, he bought popcorn for fans during screenings of “Grease Sing-A-Long” in Ocala. And for the release of his 2013 film “Killing Season” with Robert De Niro, he gave away 700 movie tickets to randomly selected local fans who correctly answered trivia questions online.

He and Preston contend such events are a way to give back to a community that has treated them so well since they moved to Marion County. Such is the thought with the free “Trading Paint” event on March 20.

“My feeling was that I do a lot of these screenings. They are usually for charity, and that’s nice but only people who can afford it can go,” he said. “And I just felt this is one of those times it should just be a gift to the public.”

The film is in limited release, so, he said last week, he wanted to give local audiences a chance to see it.

“It’s beautifully shot. It’s so beautifully shot that it should be seen on a bigger screen,” he said. “And the man who directed this has won an Oscar for a film you just have to see, it’s so spectacular.”

That would be Kurdish-born Karzan Kader, who, while at the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts, won a student Oscar for his short film “Bekas,” which was made into a feature-length film in 2010.

“This is not a lightweight production. You’ve got some serious artists involved,” Travolta said about “Trading Paint.” “There are a lot of people who view this subject matter with respect and glamor. It is very true to form, and the story is heartfelt.”

I guess there's not going to be any promotion for "Trading Paint". I just checked my DirecTV on-screen program guide and Shania or John still don't have any upcoming interviews leading up to the movie's limited theater release next Friday, March 22.

Review: John Travolta goes racing in pedestrian ‘Trading Paint’

By Michael Rechtshaffen | Los Angeles Times | March 20, 2019

Where’s Ricky Bobby when you need him?

Set against a Talladega dirt-racing backdrop, “Trading Paint” (jargon for car collisions) is a blandly earnest redemptive drama that has a committed John Travolta lead performance to thank for not completely stalling well before reaching the finish line.

Travolta affably conveys integrity and fundamental decency as Sam Munroe, a onetime legend on the Talladega Short Track who had set his sights on passing on the family racing legacy to his brooding son, Cam (Toby Sebastian).

Still hurting over the loss of his mom, who was killed years earlier in a car crash, Cam gives his old man the shaft when he takes up racing for his longtime rival, Bob “Lead Foot” Linsky (an ever-gruff Michael Madsen), who woos him with a shiny car to replace his dad’s old clunker.

Predictable tensions ensue courtesy of a script filled with awkward dramatic exposition and hokey dialogue (sample smack-down: “It’s been a long time since you were somebody!”), while Karzan Kader’s purposeful direction and budget-conscious rear-projection racing sequences ensure any momentum remains stuck in neutral.

To their credit, the cast members manage to keep things real, with Shania Twain, in her film acting debut, warmly inhabiting an otherwise thankless role as Travolta’s supportive girlfriend, but it’s ultimately not enough to compensate for that mighty fine line between trading paint — and watching it dry.

‘Trading Paint’ review: John Travolta’s latest bomb

By Johnny Oleksinski | New York Post | March 21, 2019

Movie review
TRADING PAINT
1 1/2 out of 4 stars
87 minutes. Rated R (language). Now playing.

John Travolta’s last two films, “Gotti” and “Speed Kills,” both boast scores of 0 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. And it looks like somebody’s angling for a third!

In “Trading Paint,” the actor plays a fading race-car driver in Talladega, Ala., called Sam “The Man” Munroe. His son Cam (Toby Sebastian), also a driver, races on his team. But when they have a falling out, Cam starts driving for Sam’s rival, Bob Linsky.

When Cam tells him the news, Travolta’s Sam takes a pregnant pause and then shoves stacks of papers off his desk. It is hilarious.

Betrayed and angry, Sam hops back in the driver’s seat after six years on the sidelines to kick his son’s butt. “Hell, you can’t write this any better!” says one of the track commentators. Yes, you can.

The script — with intersecting stories of a struggling family and a lion in winter sports narrative — feels as well-trod as racetrack dirt. Sure, there’s potential for pleasure in an old story done right, but Travolta croaking out a Southern accent as he overplays his outbursts and emotional reconciliations doesn’t qualify.

Singer Shania Twain plays Travolta’s love interest, Becca. Twain has an unblinkingly wholesome style that don’t impress me much. The pair has no spark, so all their tearful admissions of love are unmoving.

But what really pumps the brakes are the racing scenes. Replicating the perils of live NASCAR is always a challenge for filmmakers, not to mention that, unlike “The Fast and the Furious,” these cars just go around in circles. But it is possible to create suspense with clever, gutsy shots and strong performances behind the wheel. The races of “Trading Paint,” however, are as exciting as a Ford Taurus trying to parallel park.

'Trading Paint': Film Review

John Travolta plays a legendary dirt track racer who comes into conflict with his son in Karzan Kader's Southern-set drama.

By Frank Scheck | The Hollywood Reporter | March 21, 2019

THE BOTTOM LINE
Stalls out long before the finish line.

Some show-business careers are hard to fathom. John Travolta's, for instance. The actor burst into superstardom in the 1970s with his dynamic, sexy turns in Saturday Night Fever and Grease. He proved himself a truly talented thespian with his performances in such movies as Blow Out. After a lengthy downturn, he made a brilliant comeback in Pulp Fiction. He's aged well, and even recently garnered praise for his new, shaved head look. So why in hell is he still reduced to such direct-to-VOD mediocrities as Trading Paint?

In Karzan Kader's drama, Travolta plays Sam Munroe (even the name seems stereotypical), a legendary former dirt track racer in the deep South who wants to pass his torch down to his driver son Cam (played by Toby Sebastian of Game of Thrones, raising the question of why so many Southerners are played by Brits). Both men are still grieving over the death of Cam's mother, killed in a car accident for which Sam feels responsible. When Cam decides to stop driving for his father during a losing streak and goes to work for Sam's bitter rival Linsky (Michael Madsen, sounding like he gargles with razor blades), it causes a bitter rift between father and son. So much so, in fact, that Sam decides to begin driving again and compete with his son. Along the way, Sam takes comfort from his burgeoning romantic relationship with a newcomer to the area, Becca (singer Shania Twain, making a charming feature acting debut).

There's plenty of material here for a reasonably engrossing drama. Somehow, screenwriters Craig R. Welch and Greg Gerani fail to come up with anything remotely interesting. Character motivations and nearly everything else are left unexplored, such as, for instance, what caused Sam and Linsky to become bitter rivals (save for the fact that the latter is played by go-to bad guy Madsen). The film limps from one listless, enervating scene to another, feeling much, much longer than its 89 minutes (eight of which are credits).

And don't get me started about the cheesy dialogue, which includes such declarations as "Racing is in our blood!" During the sequences at the track, we hear from a pair of announcers commenting on the drivers' personal conflicts by breathlessly telling us we're watching "a true Southern soap opera." They make the commentators in the Pitch Perfect movies seem souls of gravitas by comparison.

Travolta, employing the necessary Southern drawl, delivers a perfectly respectable, subtle performance. But he has so little to work with that you can feel him struggling to make something out of nothing. Probably the best turn comes from veteran character actor Kevin Dunn, playing Sam's loyal mechanic Stumpy (yes, Stumpy), who gets to deliver the sort of character-defining monologue denied to all the leading performers. Director Kader proves unable to generate any excitement even with the racing sequences, so perfunctorily filmed they're almost an anti-commercial for the sport.

The sort of cornpone melodrama that would have gone over well in '70s-era Southern drive-ins as the bottom half of a double feature (and would probably have starred Jan-Michael Vincent as the son), Trading Paint seems to have no reason for being. Someone needs to resurrect Travolta's career again, stat. Quentin Tarantino, the ball's in your court.

Michael Madsen Arrested for DUI After Wrecking His SUV

TMZ | March 25, 2019

Michael Madsen is behind bars ... after wrecking his Land Rover in Malibu, he got arrested for driving under the influence.

The veteran actor of Quentin Tarantino flicks like 'Kill Bill,' 'Hateful Eight' and "Reservoir Dogs" got into a single-car crash, hitting a pole, Sunday around 8 PM ... according to law enforcement sources. We're told the L.A. County Sheriff's Department deputies responded and, when they arrived, immediately suspected Madsen had been boozing.

We're told Madsen smelled of alcohol, so he was given a field sobriety test and, according to law enforcement, it didn't go well -- his BAC was .10.

The legal limit is .08, so Madsen was arrested for misdemeanor DUI. His bail has been set at $15k.

Madsen was also busted for DUI in Malibu back in 2012, when his BAC was twice the legal limit. He entered a 30-day rehab after that arrest, and the judge also ordered him to get outpatient treatment.

Movie Review: ‘Trading Paint’

By James Lindorf | Red Carpet Crash | March 23, 2019

Trading Paint is the second feature-length film for Director Karzan Kader (Bekas) and was written by first time writer Craig R. Welch and Greg Gerani (Pumpkinhead). Trading Paint explores the world of dirt track racing and stars John Travolta, Toby Sebastian, Shania Twain, Michael Madsen, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, and Kevin Dunn. Lionsgate will bring Trading Paint to theaters on March 22nd, 2019, it will also be available On Demand the same day.

Dwindling funds put an end to the winning streak of legendary father and son racing duo Sam (Travolta) and Cam (Sebastian) leading the pair to a falling out over the future of the team. A rival racing giant (Madsen) takes advantage of this rift and offers Cam a lucrative opportunity racing for his team. When Cam accepts, and the gap between father and son grows even more substantial. With Cam gone Sam has no choice but to get back behind the wheel and race against his rival and his son for the highest stakes of his career. Bad blood off the track leads to dangerous situations on it as Sam races to win a sixth championship and to prove a point to his son.

Baring the mistake of going for a southern accent Trading Paint is the best work Travolta as put out in years. He looks to be in better shape physically and seems to be putting in more effort than he has for some of his recent straight to DVD action thrillers. Shania Twain is here for some reason. She doesn’t have a single song in the film, so it’s unclear if she was doing a friend a favor or if this is the start of her trying to put acting first. She gives a decent performance, not standing out in either a positive or negative way. Giving Travolta a run for best performance is character actor Kevin Dunn (Transformers) as Sam’s best friend Stumpy. Dunn has been an “oh it’s that guy” for the last 30 years.

Trading Paint is a sports movie in the way Jerry Maguire is a sports movie. The sport, while essential, takes a back seat to another type of story. In Jerry Maguire it was a romcom set in the world of a sports agent, and in Trading Paint, it is a father and son relationship story centered around short track dirt racing in Talladega Alabama. This results in the drama being put first and the action on the track being used to expound upon the broken relationship.

While several races do take place in the film, they are de-emphasized for two reasons. First, on the track drama is not the story that the writers and director are interested in telling. Secondly, the budget wouldn’t allow it. While the exact budget is unknown it was low enough that all the action takes place on one track, there is limited in-car footage, and each race only lasts a couple of minutes while featuring a lot of very similar if not identical footage. The filming, editing and budgetary constraints all leave the film lacking the adrenaline that one comes to expect from a racing movie.

A weaker story was buoyed by the performances of the actors, especially Travolta and Dunn, but that lack of excitement was the final nail in the tire of a film that doesn’t have quite enough momentum left to get over the finish line. I do think Trading Paint is a success for Kader and Travolta. While it may not have been the overall success everyone was hoping for, it could help boost a young career while rejuvenating an old one. Hopefully, Kader’s next project will leave the action behind altogether, and the passion Travolta brought to this project will be present in his future roles.

‘The Autoweek Podcast’ Ep. 54: ‘Trading Paint’ starring John Travolta review

The podcast dives into what could be the worst movie ever made about short-track racing

Autoweek | April 29, 2019

On this episode of the Autoweek Podcast, host Rory Carroll, Jake Lingeman and Wesley Wren give an honest assessment of John Travolta’s latest epic: “Trading Paint.” For those unaware of this movie (Ed note: I envy you), it’s a tale of turmoil and triumph on dirt short tracks in the Southern United States. Starring Travolta, Michael Madsen and Shania Twain, the movie tries to capture the romance and heart of dirt late model racing.

Sadly, it misses the mark and might possibly be one of the strangest films about racing. It’s almost like David Lynch inspired some of the scenes and the film’s sense of time. As for its accuracy? Well, the podcast has Autoweek’s short-track expert Matt Weaver chime in to give his thoughts on the movie. Weaver gives the film credit for its accuracy to the sport, but, like the rest of the team, thought it was pretty bad as a movie.
