Shania Twain, Michael Madsen Join John Travolta’s Racing Movie ‘Trading Paint’

Country music star Shania Twain, Michael Madsen, and Kevin Dunn have joined the cast of John Travolta’s racing movie “Trading Paint.”

Principal photography launched this week in Alabama with shooting scheduled through mid-September at several Alabama locations. Toby Sebastian (“Game of Thrones”) will also co-star.

Karzan Kader, director of Tyler Perry and Doug Liman’s upcoming “The Year of the Great Storm,” is helming “Trading Paint” from a script by Craig Welch and Gary Gerani. Travolta portrays a down-and-out dirt track racing legend who is drawn back into the winner’s circle after his son, an aspiring driver, joins a competitor’s racing team, and incites an intense and dangerous competition between father and son.

Ambi Pictures and Paradox Studios are fully financing and producing the film. The producers are Andrea Iervolino, Monika Bacardi, Silvio Muraglia, and Alexandra Klim. AMBI Distribution is handling worldwide sales for the film.

Iervolino said, “It’s well known that dirt track racing is one of the most exciting sports in the world, and it’s also one of the most dangerous. Our story is rooted in that high-speed danger, but also very much character driven, and this is where having someone of John’s caliber and gravitas pays great dividends.”

Scene for 'Trading Paint' movie starring John Travolta, Shania Twain to be shot in Hoover Friday

Producers of the “Trading Paint” movie that stars John Travolta, Shania Twain and Tony Sebastian are scheduled to film a scene for the movie at a Hoover restaurant Friday, the owner of the restaurant said.

Nick Manakides, owner of the Golden Rule Bar-B-Q at 1571 Montgomery Highway, said the film crew for the movie is supposed to arrive about 7:30 or 8 a.m., followed by extras at 9:30 a.m. and actors at 10 a.m.

They’re filming a scene in which a restaurant manager inappropriately touches the wife of a dirt track race car driver played by Sebastian, sparking a conflict, Manakides said.

There’s no word on what all cast members will be present for this scene, but about 80 cast and crew members are expected to be involved in filming the scene, Manakides said. About 16 of his employees are scheduled to be extras, he said.

He originally had hoped to play the restaurant manager until he learned what the scene was about and was told they needed someone with a different physique for the part, he said.

Manakides said there’s only about two minutes of screen time scheduled for the shot and he’s not sure how long filming will take.

He wasn’t sure why they chose his restaurant, but the director of the movie, Karzan Kader, had been coming to eat there frequently for several weeks with the director of cinematography before they inquired about filming there.

Manakides said he thinks they didn’t want a restaurant that looked too modern, and his restaurant looks exactly like it did when he opened in 1974. Another restaurant in Hueytown was considered, but his Golden Rule Bar-B-Q was smaller and more intimate than the restaurant in Hueytown, he said.

Manakides said the producers of the “Woodlawn” movie were supposed to shoot a scene at his restaurant when that movie was made but ended up going somewhere else because he was going to charge them a fee for shutting his restaurant down. This time, he decided to let the producers of “Trading Paint” have time at his restaurant for free, he said. “We’re doing it for the fun of it,” he said.

The “Trading Paint” movie tells the story of how a veteran race car driver (Travolta) and his son, a fellow driver, (Sebastian), overcome family and professional conflicts and balance competition, ego, resentment and a racing nemesis to come out stronger on the other side, according to the International Movie Database website.

Much of the movie reportedly is being shot in the Birmingham area, particularly the Bessemer/Hueytown area, between mid-August and mid-September. The film is due out in theaters in June 2018, according to IMDB.

On The Set Of ‘Trading Paint’ With Shania Twain And John Travolta

Shania Twain is gearing up for her big screen feature film debut with a little help from her veteran co-star John Travolta.

“I think Shania is born to be on film,” the “Grease” actor tells ET Canada’s Matte Babel. “Her videos say that. Her videos are a knockout but I think this is such a beautiful role.”

ET Canada was on the set of “Trading Paint” in Alabama where Twain says acting feels totally natural to her.

“Well, it’s fun and it feels really natural,” the Grammy-winning Canadian superstar says, adding being on set with Travolta helped calm her nerves. “I thought I was going to be really intimidated.”

In the drama, two-time Oscar nominee Travolta stars as Sam, a veteran race car driver who learns to balance ego, family drama, personal relationships and competitive nature with his racing son. Cast as Sam’s girlfriend Becca, acting newcomer Twain says she was totally in awe of her co-star’s skills.

“Just watching him in the moment, this guy cries on the spot! Is this guy for real or what?! I am just really amazed,” she tells ET Canada. But she’s not the only singer on the set. Twain reveals Travolta “sings on the spot all the time.” Does this mean there’s a future duet between the two in the works?

“I didn’t reveal the little secret that we are thinking about doing a duet,” Travolta says. “‘I told him I was looking at you, she looked gorgeously beautiful,’ this song came right into my head, this is between takes. Shania said, “I love that song. That would be a good duet.'” “I wanted to do a duet album with him years ago,” Twain confirms.

Naturally, being on a movie set surrounded by cars makes the 63-year-old actor think of his “Grease” days.

“Music is a big part of my life and I miss doing it and, of course, if I want to have an effect on others I will break out into a familiar song,” Travolta teases. “I thought if I broke into ‘Grease  Lightning’, I bet it would cause a very good effect.” And he was right: “I did the whole thing, the whole crew went crazy, it was the perfect set up!”

Shania Twain is back and busier than ever. In addition to promoting her chart-topping new album, Now, and prepping for her 2018 tour, Twain recently filmed a new movie, Trading Paint, with John Travolta.

“We finished it a couple weeks ago and that was just an incredible experience,” Twain tells Sounds Like Nashville. “I enjoyed it and I enjoyed getting to know John. He’s a very sweet person. I’ve known him for several years now just on short little chats, but now [working on] this movie, we got to know each other a little bit better. I’m just lucky to have this film experience because he’s been very nurturing. He coached me through it.”

In Trading Paint, Travolta plays a down and out dirt track racing legend, who is drawn back into the winners circle after his son, an up and coming driver, joins a competitor’s racing team. Naturally, a father/son rivalry ensues and the competition gets intense. Directed by directed by Karzan Kader, the movie was filmed on location in Alabama.

“I’m Becca in the movie,” shares Twain. “I’m a school teacher in a small southern town, just starting my life over from being a big city girl and I find love in a dirt car racer. It’s a really sweet movie and the actors are just so strong.”

Twain says when the opportunity arose, she was excited to tackle a new challenge. “I learned so much. It’s a whole new chapter of my life I wasn’t expecting because it was really last minute,” she says. “I wasn’t expecting it at all, so I love the spontaneity of it. That’s why I dove into it because I didn’t have too much time to think about it.”

Though she’s starred in numerous music videos, Twain’s only other major film experience was a cameo as herself in the 2004 movie I Heart Huckabees, starring Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Mark Wahlberg, Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin. She’s eager to adding more acting roles to her resume. “I definitely will look more into acting,” she says. “I loved it, so I’d like to do it again.”

First Look! John Travolta Is a Race Car Driver Romancing Shania Twain in Trading Paint

John Travolta is earning his racing stripes!

In the new movie Trading Paint, Travolta, 63, stars as a dirt track racing legend who is down on his luck and reluctantly drawn back into the sport when his son joins a competitor’s racing team.

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at photos (click to enlarge) of the Grease star in all his racing gear glory — including a shot of him in the driver’s seat, as well as the film’s leading lady, music icon Shania Twain.

“This was John’s first time racing on a dirt track,” producer Andrea Iervolino tells PEOPLE. “He put in the time to train and proved he was a natural. We put him out there with other professional dirt track racers as well for some of the scenes and he really held his own. Talladega is an inspiring location to film and you can feel the history and grit of the track. It’ll inspire any driver who gets out on it.”

Twain plays Travolta’s girlfriend in the film and Iervolino says she brought a lot of heart to the project. “I couldn’t imagine anyone else up there next to him now and she’s made the role her own,” he says. “Movies today need more prominent female roles and Shania really outperforms in this role.”

Iervolino also praised Travolta’s talent and demeanor on set: “Having someone as talented and driven as John on set really lends itself to the story,” he says. “He’s very powerful in his scenes and his chemistry with the other actors is so natural and effortless. It really makes this story come to life in ways we couldn’t have predicted.”

Directed by Karzan Kader, Trading Paint also stars Michael Madsen (Kill Bill), Toby Sebastian (Game of Thrones), Kevin Dunn (Warrior).

It’s scheduled to open in theaters in 2018.

"Trading Paint" is scheduled to be released 3 weeks from today. However, I think the June 1 date is in doubt because there still isn't a trailer for the movie or even an official website.

UPDATE: Now according to the same Shania fan who has been in contact with the movie's director on social media, "Trading Paint" has been pushed back indefinitely. It possibly could be released in 2019.

A Shania fan contacted Gary Gerani, one of the writers for "Trading Paint". He said they have an approved trailer, which lasts about two minutes, and it should be available very soon. Shania has at least one line in the trailer, and some quick dramatic moments as her character witnesses a car crash. She gets a separate close-up shot with her name, along with Travolta, Sebastian, Madsen, and the actor playing Stumpy. The movie itself is supposed to be opening February 22. If the movie doesn't open on this date, then it's anybody's guess.

Small-town dirt track racing hits the big screen in a film starring John Travolta

'Trading Paint' is going to have some spectacular accents, judging by the trailer

It's always a gamble when a film studio does a movie about racing of any sort. Hollywood has done Formula 1 and NASCAR with varying degrees of success, finally deciding that NASCAR is better done as a comedy while Formula 1 needs a heavy dose of plot signposts to get a general American audience through the intricacies of the sport. But now, it's dirt track racing's turn in the spotlight.

A bearded and strangely accented John Travolta stars alongside Shania Twain and Michael Madsen in "Trading Paint," a drama about dirt track racing filmed in Alabama. Travolta's blue-collar character appears to have been dialed up way past 11, right down to a nametag on his shirt, a well-worn baseball cap and the obligatory fight in a bar with interior decorations from 1980.

Madsen plays the villain, of course, with the help of his trademark hat (when was the last time Madsen did not wear a cowboy hat in a film?), while Twain appears to be in the cast to lend the film some Southern credibility. Meanwhile, Toby Sebastian plays Travolta's impatient and rebellious son who wants to strike out on his own and comes under the influence of the villain, a plot twist revealed in the trailer, forcing Travolta's character to get back into racing -- another plot point revealed in the trailer. Kevin Dunn (playing a character nicknamed Stumpy), Buck Taylor and Luis Da Silva round out the genuinely impressive cast -- how did they get all these actors together? -- while Karzan Kader directs.

If the trailer is any indication, the accents in this movie are going to be spectacular, but it's never a good sign when one can tell the general direction of the plot within the first 10 seconds of a two-minute trailer. There's even the obligatory father-son tension and plenty of stuff-throwing in a garage, enough to trigger a flashback to episodes of "American Chopper." Hopefully, some plot twists that aren't visible in the trailer are on the way, but we're going to buckle up in a six-point harness in preparation for a nonstop parade of accents and stereotypes of the rural American South all the same.

The main question we have at this point is: If Shania Twain is playing a character in this movie, does Shania Twain the country singer exist in this universe?

"Trading Paint" opens Feb. 22.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Trading Paint" is getting a limited release on March 22 which means it will only be in select theaters. Also according to the website, the movie will be released online and DVD on February 22.

John Travolta's movie "Gotti" did awful at the box office/theaters last year. Obviously they don't expect "Trading Paint" to do any better. If a limited release movie receives positive word of mouth, it is gradually expanded to more theaters nationwide. Sometimes limited release movies only open in major metropolitan cities like New York and Los Angeles.
