Sting just postponed his May 22 - June 6 shows at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The CDC is advising all shows in May be postponed/canceled. Shania will probably have an announcement postponing her May 20 - June 6 shows soon.

Devin Walker (one of Shania's dancers in her "Let's Go!" residency show) was a guest on Kimber London's "Good Talk" Instagram Live show today. He said that for now the show is 'dark', and that Shania is planning to 'make up all of her missed shows'.

***Shania's next leg of her "Let's Go!" residency show is scheduled for August 21 - September 6 at Zappos Theater. Of course that along with all other Las Vegas residency shows and concerts in general are still very much in doubt this year due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Sting just postponed his residency until next year. I expect Shania and other artists to follow in the coming weeks.

This also means Vegas residencies and concerts. What a disaster. Shania spent all that time putting a show together and she only had 8 shows. Speaking of Vegas, why hasn't Shania/Zappos Theater announced the cancellation of her Aug-Sep shows yet? Basically all other residencies have already been canceled for the rest of the year.

Music Exec Warns Festivals, Concerts Unlikely Until 2022

Well, this is not what music fans want to hear.

Marc Geiger, the longtime global head of music at the WME agency and a co-founder of Lollapalooza, said this week that big live music events are not likely to be back next year.

A number of major festivals were cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic with a promise to return in 2021. Many artists have also announced rescheduled tour dates for next year.

Appearing on The Bob Lefsetz Podcast, Geiger was asked when he thinks festivals and concerts will be back to normal. “In my humble opinion, it’s going to be 2022.”

Geiger said there are “probably 20” obstacles promoters of concerts and festivals have to overcome, including “spacing and density” protocols and “infinite liability” issues with insurance companies.

“It’s going to take that long before, what I call, the germaphobic economy is slowly killed off and replaced by the claustrophobia economy – that’s when people want to get out and go out to dinner and have their lives, go to festivals and shows,” he said.

“It’s my instinct, that’s going to take a while because super-spreader events – sports, shows, festivals…aren’t going to do too well when the virus is this present.”

Geiger warned that “the next six months may be more painful than the last six months, and maybe the next six months after that are even more so.”

***I knew there would be no way Vegas shows would return in January. Now Sting is scheduled to return May 7-22 which was originally scheduled to be the second set of shows.

Opening Night was one year ago today. Shania only performed 8 shows of her "Let's Go!" residency (6 last December and 2 in March) before everything shut down due to Coronavirus. As I understand it, residencies are aiming for May or June reopenings. Who knows if they'll be able to. How can you pack 4,000+ people in a theater not knowing if they have the virus? Even with a vaccine, you don't know who got it. It wouldn't really be economically worth putting on the shows if they limit theater capacity to 20-25% and have people spread out. But that might be what they'll have to do.

Both Gwen and Shania are songwriters, and in addition, Shania plays guitar—something people often forget, as they think of her mostly as a vocalist. Does that add another element to the gig in terms of how she communicates with the band? How are Shania and Gwen different as far as executing the shows?

Absolutely. Shania is very hands-on with her whole production. With the Vegas shows, she’s the creative director, which doesn’t happen often. Usually with a tour or show of that size, of that level, the artist hires a creative director and they work together, but Shania did it all on her own. She’s very involved with the music, the visual aspects, and the choreography.

Also the fact that she wrote or co-wrote all these songs is impressive, and obviously, she’s very attached to them because they’re hers. So she is particular, but I like to honor the fact that these are her creations and this is all her vision, so I always defer to her for advice on how to approach things. A lot of times I will play what I think is best, and if she doesn’t say anything, great, we stick with that. Or she may want to change something slightly, or want something more like the record, and I’ll approach it that way. The same thing goes when we do our acoustic set. We were trying to figure out which instrument to play, and I brought a few things to try out. I tried an acoustic bass and she liked it, so we stuck with that.

Gwen is laidback. She created her music, it’s great stuff, and even with my first rehearsal with Gwen, she looked at me and said, “If I don’t say anything to you, you’re doing great and keep doing that.” I said, “OK.” To this day she has never said anything to me regarding my playing, so I figured, “Cool. I’m just going to do what I do, and if she wants me to change something, she will tell me.” She’s very much a professional and she knows what she wants, but I think she trusts her musicians and her musical director, and so it’s been really easy working with her. 

With everything on hold in the music industry, what is keeping you busy? Some artists are choosing to perform socially distanced shows, and of course many are doing live streams.

There’s really no live music happening for a while. We still have our Vegas residencies in place, and apparently, all the shows that have been cancelled will be rescheduled, but we just don’t know when. It depends on the virus, the vaccine and when we can get it, and when large groups of people can gather again.

Gwen and Shania don’t do small shows. We do shows with 3000 people minimum, so we have to wait until 3000 people can gather in the same room. I’m looking at our calendars for Vegas, because with Shania we have our dates laid out for us until the end of 2021, so I can see each run as we approach it.

We can’t guess anything because we’re still very much in a pandemic, so I think it’s going to be a while before those shows take place. We haven’t talked about doing any Livestream shows or drive-in shows. Shania is doing some television appearances in Switzerland and she has local musicians to join her for that. Gwen has been busy with The Voice and some other things, so we haven’t heard about any shows other than Vegas.

I wonder when Shania/Zappos will announce her residency return date. As I mentioned above, one of her dancers thinks they'll be back in September.

First Shania said she plans on resuming her "Let's Go!" residency in December on a UK podcast, then one of her dancers said he heard September, then a couple weeks later he said he had no idea. So who knows. But September seems to be the more likely return date since residencies are scheduled to begin reopening in July starting with Bruno Mars.

I tried to get more info out of one Shania's dancers. He wouldn't take the bait this time.  Last month he said he was hearing a September return date. I think the Vegas announcement will be soon. Maybe even next week.

If Shania returns to Vegas in December like she mentioned on that UK podcast a couple months ago, the lead single will most likely be released shortly before then and be added to the setlist.

Whether she's returning in September or December (or somewhere in the middle), tickets could possibly go on-sale as early as this Friday. Or the following week.

This is strange. Live Nation has a March 14, 2022 "Cancelled" date on their website. Could this be her first show back? I doubt it since all the residencies I've seen are returning by the end of this year. But if it is, that definitely means an album and/or a Christmas album is coming in the Fall.
