Las Vegas headliner Shania Twain to be named Woman of the Year
By John Katsilometes | Las Vegas Review-Journal | August 24, 2019
Man, she feels like a winner.
Shania Twain is joining a list of regal Las Vegas women as her “Let’s Go” residency opens at Planet Hollywood.
Twain is to be the next Nevada Ballet Theatre Woman of the Year, the honoree at the annual NBT Black & White Ball on Jan. 25 at Caesars Palace. Twain opens her series at Zappos Theater on Dec. 6.
The superstar recording artist, who has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, is the top-selling female country solo artist ever. She tapped into her own lyrics to express her gratitude.
“I would like to thank NBT for having an award that acknowledges women’s achievements,” she said in a statement Friday. “Ballet is such a formidable discipline and I am honored to be recognized as a patron of this art. Let’s go girls!”
For the uninitiated, that’s the spoken opening line of “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.” It’s one of the hits to be performed during Twain’s run at Planet Hollywood. We also can expect such well-known songs as “You’re Still The One,” “From This Moment On,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” and “Come On Over.”
Twain joins an iconic collection of women who have been honored by NBT over the past 36 years, including Debbie Reynolds, Rita Rudner, Celine Dion, Marie Osmond, Bette Midler, Mitzi Gaynor, Florence Henderson, Debbie Allen, Olivia Newton-John, Vanessa Williams, Giada De Laurentiis and, last year, Rita Moreno.
“Shania Twain is a human being of great strength, courage and resilience,” NBT co-founder and co-chair Nancy Houssels said in a statement. “Her unending talent has raised entertainment to new heights and her devotion to children who are suffering is beyond admirable. She is not just a Woman of the Year, she is a Woman of the Century.”
Twain is set to perform 23 shows through June and has an extensive performance history in Las Vegas as headliner at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace for 105 performances from 2012 to 2014. She was in attendance at Celine Dion’s finale at Caesars on June 8, and had previously scouted Zappos Theater this spring during Gwen Stefani’s headlining show.
Nine years ago, Twain founded the Shania Kids Can, a nonprofit that provides services for schoolchildren in North America who are experiencing economic hardship and food insecurity. Since 2013, the nonprofit has operated at both elementary and middle schools in Las Vegas, and the program will be offered at French Elementary School this school year.
As the next Woman of the Year says, “By creating a positive cycle for students and providing extra support, we’re giving them a better chance at personal success in the future.”
Just a reminder … Shania will be heading back to Vegas this week for the Nevada Ballet Theatre ball on Saturday the 25th where she will be presented with the Woman of the Year honor.

Canadian singer songwriter Shania Twain is the top-selling female country artist of all time and among the best-selling music artists of all time. She is the recipient of five GRAMMY Awards and a 2016 Billboard Women in Music Icon Award, earning her the respected title “Queen of Country Pop.”
In 2010, Twain established “Shania Kids Can” (SKC), a non-profit organization that provides services for elementary school children in North America who are experiencing personal suffering, economic hardship and food insecurity. Shania Twain’s Las Vegas ride continues with NBT honor

Shania Twain describes her schedule simply.
“If I’m not working, I’m playing,” she says during a phone chat while on vacation in Switzerland.
Where working and playing meet is dancing.
“A big part of what I do is visual arts, absolutely,” says the superstar singer-songwriter and ongoing resident headliner at Zappos Theater. “Of course I am a recording artist, but visual arts is a key element in what I am doing. I’m a live performer. I like to take advantage of what I learn from the dancers, who are very influential in my ability to perform.”
Twain has employed an athletic, tight-knit dance team, which she has referred to as “my country can-can hunks” at Planet Hollywood. Twain’s attention to the art of dance, and her history as a resident headliner in Las Vegas, prompted Nevada Ballet Theatre to honor the best-selling artist as the company’s Woman of the Year.
Twain will be honored Saturday night at Caesars Palace. Twain, a fan of Las Vegas entertainment (and shopping, restaurants and many of the city’s other unique characteristics), joins a list of prominent women honored since Elaine Wynn was recognized in 1985.
That impressive list of female icons, honored for their artistic achievements, philanthropic contributions and dedication to Las Vegas including Debbie Reynolds, Celine Dion, Rita Rudner, Marie Osmond, Bette Midler, Mitzi Gaynor, Florence Henderson, Priscilla Presley, Debbie Allen, Olivia Newton-John, Vanessa Williams, Giada De Laurentiis, and in 2019, Rita Moreno.
“I am so humbled,” Twain says. “I was very surprised when got the call about it. It’s one of those moments in life when you feel flattered and honored, to be in that long line of incredible women.”
Twain is at the top of her game in her “Let’s Go” performances at Zappos Theater. She promised a party atmosphere after scouting Gwen Stefani’s splashy “Just a Girl” production at the venue. Twain has delivered, and says she is enjoying her performances more today than ever.
“First, I’m grateful to be healthy, to be athletic, and I’m taking advantage of that,” Twain says. “I don’t want to take that for granted. I’m just appreciating, more than ever, my ability to get up there and run around and just be athletic. I’m really enjoying that, the interaction with the dancers, involving myself in the choreography and staging.”
The Woman of the Year adds, “I know more than I ever did before. When I get on the stage I am presenting, top to bottom, something that is me and it’s so satisfying.”
Perrico’s back
On the topic of ballet, we naturally turn to trumpet ace David Perrico. This makes sense: Perrico’s Pop Strings is performing as the house band for the sixth straight year at the Black and White gala.
Those who attend can make this an only-in-VegasVille doubleheader by catching Perrico after the gala at Cleopatra’s Barge. His set time is 10 p.m., ideal for your weekend grooving needs.
There's no way to watch it but tonight's Nevada Ballet Theatre Black & White Ball is at 6:00pm PT in Las Vegas which is 9:00pm ET. It's being held at Caesars Palace. Shania will be honored as Woman of the Year and most likely give a speech. There will be pictures (maybe video) from the press and media.

Shania Twain, Mark Davis forge good luck in Las Vegas
By John Katsilometes | Las Vegas Review-Journal | January 26, 2020
File this under, “When Bad Things Happen To Good Halftime Shows.”
Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis experienced such an unfortunate event, during halftime of Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego in 2003. The Raiders were on their way to a 48-21 drubbing by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by current Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.
Shania Twain was among the performers that day at SDCCU Stadium, then called Qualcomm Stadium. It turns out that Davis is a big Twain fan. He just isn’t a fan of that particular game.
“But we got our (butts) kicked, so from then on, whenever I hear Shania — and I love her, I love her music — I cringe, because it brought back such bad memories,” Davis said during Saturday night’s Nevada Ballet Theatre Black & White gala at Caesars Palace.
Twain was the night’s Woman of the Year honoree. Davis was seated at her side during the dinner.
Twain, who currently performs her “Let’s Go” residency at Zappos Theater, was among the performers at that ill-fated (for the Raiders) Super Bowl. Twain sang two songs for a TV audience of approximately 88 million, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “Up!” She was followed by No Doubt with “I’m Just a Girl,” and Sting with “Message in a Bottle.”
Twain was promoting her “Up!” album, released just two months before the performance. Davis had never met the recording artist until the annual Power of Love gala in March at MGM Grand Garden. Twain was at the gala to introduce honoree Lionel Richie, and Davis staked out the Twain table late in the program.
“Her table was a couple tables over, so I thought I’d just go over and meet her, but then she goes back up onstage for the finale,” Davis said. “So I don’t think I’ll get to talk to her, I’m feeling disappointed, but as I’m leaving she was right in front of me on the escalator.
“I tapped her on the shoulder and I say, ‘I don’t want to interrupt you, but I’m Mark Davis and I’m with the Raiders. I love your music, but every time I hear it I cringe!’”
Davis then told her why.
“She says, ‘What! You mean, I’m bad luck!’ ” Davis said, laughing. “I said, ‘No! We’re not blaming it on you!’ And she said, ‘We’re going to have to fix that! I’m going to be good luck from now on.’”
A $60K outlay
The Twain-Davis tandem brought good fortune to NBT’s live auction.
A ticket package for a select 2020 regular-season game, with four club-level seats and four field passes reached two bids of $30,000. Davis cut in to offer TWO packages, doubling the winning total to a combined $60,000.
Moments later, during the paddle-raise for cash donations, Davis pledged another $20,000. That lifted the Raiders-related haul to $80,000, and that cringe was long gone.
Around the room
More from the B&W gala:
Twain remembered growing up as a singer in Windsor, Ontario. “There was no academy for me. I grew up singing in bars, as an 8-year-old child, sometimes standing ON the bar, in fact so everybody could see this tiny child up there … My career came from a place of determination and hard work, something that these ballet dancers know very, very well.” …
Marie Osmond gave the presenting speech for Twain. Osmond was characteristically buoyant: ““Shania has had not one, but two surgeries on her voice. For a singer, that’s a nightmare, and I know what you’ve been through — because I Googled it.”
Osmond says she is still reviewing options to return to a Strip residency, with a new stage partner, but is currently enjoying her recurring performing-arts center shows across the country. “There is nothing better than having a full orchestra behind you and just opening up,” she said. Osmond continues her open-ended commitment on “The Talk.” …
Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys announced Twain’s walk-in to the event. Carter attended the gala with his wife, Lauren Kitt, and the couple are still Las Vegas residents. Carter reinforced the band’s desire to return to residency (as performers) in Las Vegas when they are finished touring …
Davis attended with Raiderette Director Mandy Voecks, who is a former Raiderette and also a former member of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders …
You know it’s a new day (as Celine Dion would say) in VegasVille when you encounter Raiders President Marc Badain checking out the silent auction. I ran into him next to a mannequin in a Stitched suit …
NBT’s Future Dance Program artists performed during the ceremony. It’s one of the many initiatives for the company, under the stewardship of co-founder Nancy Houssels, Executive Director Beth Barbre, and Artistic Director Roy Kaiser. Up next at Reynolds Hall is “Bolero,” George Balanchine’s “The Four Temperaments,” and the world premiere work “The Current,” by Krista Baker. Get there. I feel there will be a Raider in the house, too.
