By Allison Hussey | Pitchfork | May 29, 2020

Orville Peck has announced a new EP titled Show Pony. It’s out June 12 via Columbia Records, marking his first release for the label. Orville Peck Announces New EP ‘Show Pony,’ Teases Shania Twain Duet

Masked singer drops “No Glory in the West” from upcoming six-track project

By Jon Freeman | Rolling Stone | May 29, 2020

Orville Peck has announced details for his new EP Show Pony, his first release since signing with Columbia Records and the follow-up to 2019’s Sub Pop album Pony. As a preview of the six-track project, which arrives June 12th and features a duet with pop-country queen Shania Twain, Peck has released the brooding song “No Glory in the West.”

With gentle acoustic strums that echo cowboy songs of old, “No Glory in the West” dismantles various romantic ideals of travel and cowboy life as a way to examine solitary life. “Nowhere left to go, going’s all we know,” Peck sings in his rumbling baritone. In the new video directed by Isaiah Seret, he’s every bit the lonesome cowboy figure, riding his horse through snowy valleys and shadowy forests. It’s a nice counterpoint to the colorful video for “Summertime,” which also appears on the EP.

Additionally, Shania Twain drops by for a duet on the song “Legends Never Die,” which Twain teased on Thursday. “Baby we’ve been up all night,” she tweeted, which Peck then retweeted to his followers. Elsewhere, Peck keeps his sense of camp alive with a cover of Bobbie Gentry’s “Fancy,” famously recorded by Reba McEntire in 1990 and beloved by drag queens the world over.

Orville Peck – Show Pony track list:

1. “Summertime”
2. “No Glory in the West”
3. “Drive Me, Crazy”
4. “Kids”
5. “Legends Never Die” (duet with Shania Twain)
6. “Fancy”

Show Pony - Orville Peck

‘Show Pony’ Orville Peck’s brand new 6 track EP will come out via Peck's new label home of Columbia. It will be the follow-up to last year's hugely successful debut, Pony. He explained in a statement:

"I loved my experience with Pony. However, Show Pony is a more confident perspective and allows me to share even more both lyrically and musically. Like all country albums, Show Pony is a little collection of stories – some sad, some happy – and I am excited for people to hear it. Working with Shania was a dream come true, her music made me feel empowered as a kid and was a huge influence on me."

Shania to sing duet with Orville Peck on his EP Show Pony - July 2020

Orville just posted the EP will now be released in July.

Orville Peck @orvillepeck

Hey gang, I know it’s only two days away but I’ve decided to push the release of my new EP ‘Show Pony’ to July. We’re undergoing a huge overdue worldwide transformation thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement and that is mainly what I want to put my focus on at the moment. The momentum is currently so strong, and it needs to keep going in order to dismantle the injustices of oppression, so if your voice hasn’t been heard yet just use it, or walk out and hear the protesters, and if you’re scared, tell them Orville sent you! Last week, thanks to the help of some lovely people we raised close to $37k, and this week I’ll be performing a little surprise from the EP at @wynwoodpride where we’re hoping to raise $100k. Lots of great performers, so if you guys like what you see, remember to tip- and y’all, even if you can’t tip, watching to actively educate yourself is also a win for everyone. Love you all for being kind people and I can’t wait for you to hear the album - but lets use this month to get our sh*t in order because this is only the start of the marathon for equality💕

Update (6/10): Orville Peck is delaying the release of his EP Show Pony from this Friday to a date to be determined in July. In a statement, the masked country singer said he is instead focusing on the protests against police brutality and racial equality sweeping the United States. “We’re undergoing a huge overdue worldwide transformation thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement and that is mainly what I want to put my focus on at the moment. The momentum is currently so strong, and it needs to keep going in order to dismantle the injustices of oppression, so if your voice hasn’t been heard yet just use it, or walk out and hear the protesters, and if you’re scared, tell them Orville sent you! Why Orville Peck Is the Unconventional Best New Artist Pick the Grammys Need

By Joe Lynch | Billboard | June 15, 2020

In January, Orville Peck was seated at his first Grammy Awards after walking the red carpet with his friend Diplo. Peck recalls sitting “five rows from the front having the time of my life when I hear someone calling my name during the commercial break. I turn around, and Shania Twain is running down the aisle.”

By mid-March, the queer troubadour was recording a duet with Twain at her Las Vegas ranch just before the pandemic forced a lockdown. The session yielded the rollicking track “Legends Never Die” from Peck’s upcoming EP, Show Pony, out this July on Columbia. “I’ve been the biggest Shania fan my whole life, and she was literally the last person I got to hang out with before [self-isolating],” he says over Zoom, calling from his sunny Los Angeles apartment. Even in the comfort of his own home, he’s wearing his ever-present Lone Ranger disguise that shields his identity; today, it’s in the form of black tassels dangling down from his mask. (Peck keeps his real name, age and most other personal details private.)

Earning co-signs from Diplo and Twain speaks to the wide-ranging appeal of Peck, whose sonorous voice has garnered comparisons to Johnny Cash’s baritone and whose lyrics evoke the widescreen Westerns of old Hollywood. Peck’s self-produced debut album, Pony, arrived in March 2019 on Sub Pop, but by that December, he signed a new recording contract with Columbia. Since, he has performed the album’s breakout track, “Dead of Night,” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!; was booked for first-time slots at Coachella and Stagecoach (both of which are postponed); and is slated to open for labelmate Harry Styles’ Harryween shows in 2021 (postponed from Oct. 2020).

Now, following a buzzy career launch and while gearing up for the release of his major-label debut, which should arrive before the Grammys’ eligibility period ends, Peck could be a dark horse contender for best new artist at the 2021 ceremony. His team submitted him in two Americana categories last year to no avail, but with backing from Columbia this time — which at the 2020 ceremony had Lil Nas X and Rosalía up for best new artist — there could be a similar push for Peck. “Having some recognition on a level like that?” he says. “Anybody would be lying to say they would not be thrilled.”

Peck always knew he wanted to perform, feeling “drawn to the theatricality of country stars” from the 1970s. “Gram Parsons used to wear the most incredible Nudie suits — Liberace could never,” he says. “Porter Wagoner came off fairly conservative [but wore] crazy bedazzled outfits ... while singing about holding back tears and heartbreak. The combination of all those things to me is a gay person’s dream. It’s drama. It’s bold.” And though he says he has been “making music practically my whole life,” it wasn’t until the late-2010s birth of his Peck persona in Toronto that he went all-in on country. “I had it ingrained that I had to work toward something that was employable or acceptable,” he says. “It’s the opposite of what you need to do as an artist. ”Peck started creating his own brand of queer camp for the Wild West.

Show Pony continues the narrative, but with added “dark flair” best heard on his gender-bending reinvention of “Fancy,” the 1969 feminist anthem by Bobbie Gentry. The EP’s visuals are similarly theatrical: In the clip for lead single “Summertime,” he trades his leather jacket for a flower-laden shirt after getting pinned down by vines with a mind of their own; meanwhile, “No Glory in the West” depicts Peck as a solitary cowboy dancing around a bonfire in the snow-covered mountains. It’s a sublime mixture of the heartfelt and the ridiculous that could only arrive through a distinctly queer lens. (As novelist Christopher Isherwood wrote about camp in 1954: “You can’t camp about something you don’t take seriously. You’re not making fun of it, you’re making fun out of it.”) Peck is so committed that he even caked his wall with old-timey “Wanted” and “Reward” posters ahead of a virtual Oculus gig.

“Without sounding cliché and pretentious, I genuinely try to make music that is important to me,” he says. “As long as the sincerity is there, it gives you the freedom to play it any way you want. It allows you to take it to a world of camp or theatricality.”

It has paid off so far, as his 35 million total U.S. streams (according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data) prove, but will it translate to a Grammy nod? A country act hasn’t won best new artist since Zac Brown Band in 2010, but Peck’s appreciation for and commitment to the genre’s traditional roots might get him there — or at least help round out those in the running. Either way, it’s nothing Peck is too hung up about. As he says, creating his persona “was the first step toward being the artist I always wanted to be.”

Shania to sing duet with Orville Peck on his EP Show Pony - August 2020

Orville performed "No Glory In The West" from his new EP for CMT today. At the end of the performance he said "You can pick up my new EP in August." So apparently Show Pony has been pushed back again.

This could also possibly delay the single release of his duet with Shania ("Legends Never Die") supposedly due out in mid July.

Well the song is a new song, Yes Shania didn't write it but if she performs it on Good Morning America then I'll be excited. I can wait a few more months for an album from her. He has a Johnny Cash vibe and it will be interesting too see how these two sound together.

Either Shania and Orville Peck are making a music video (most likely) for their duet "Legends Never Die" or they are recording a performance for Shania's appearance on "Good Morning America" on August 14. Orville's new 6-song EP Show Pony will be released the same day. If it is in fact a music video, does this confirm Shania will be debuting a new song of her own on "GMA"?

There’s a method to Orville Peck’s maskness

By Brad Wheeler | The Globe and Mail | August 11, 2020

Orville Peck was at the Grammy telecast earlier this year when a woman yelled his name during a commercial break. Peck turned around to see none other than Shania Twain coming his way. The country music icon got to Peck’s seat, hoisted him in her arms and hugged him. She’s a fan – not nearly the only one.

Peck stands out in the country music crowd. The crooner, with a moody baritone, substantial indie-music cred and a storyteller’s stone-lonesome heart, is mysterious, gay and never appears in public without his trademark tassled masks. Nowadays everyone and their dog is wearing a mask, but nobody pulls it off with the panache of the Canadian balladeer now based in Los Angeles.

Following up on the out-of-nowhere success of his 2019 debut album, Pony, Peck releases a new EP on Friday, which comes with a duet with his heroine/admirer Twain. The album is ironically called Show Pony, a term used to describe a person who appears to perform well, but has no actual ability. By phone, Peck spoke to The Globe and Mail about persons, personas and the twain they meet, and the Twain he met.

Orville Peck, what’s your deal?

I’m a country and western artist who likes to sing songs about myself with the sincerity that is required in the genre and in a way that is perceived as new and different and that maybe challenges the status quo.

And what about the fancy masks you wear? Do you wear them to remove yourself from the equation, so as to let the songs stand on their own?

That’s one of the byproducts, for sure. It’s not the main intention though. What I love about country music is that it is very much at the crossroads of sincerity and performance. I think that’s a beautiful space to create art in. You can be as bold and dramatic and theatrical as you want, but you get away with it because all of it is steeped in sincerity. I like to work from that place.

But with the performative aspects, don’t you risk people questioning your sincerity?

I’ve gotten questions like that. But at the end of the day it isn’t my job to answer that for people. I spend all my effort trying to make art that I think I would enjoy and that I can feel proud of, because it’s from a genuine place. I can’t also worry whether other people see that or not. That’s a battle you’re probably going to lose at some point.

Any other intentions with your look?

I like things that are not just spoon-fed to me. I grew up loving artists like David Bowie and Freddie Mercury and Elton John. These are prolific artists who created profound lyrics and songs, but also looked like they were from outer space. You can do both those things.

Clearly one person who doesn’t question your sincerity is Shania Twain, who you duet with on "Legends Never Die" on your new EP Show Pony. How did that come together?

I’d heard that she was a fan of mine. My first reaction was that I didn’t think that was possible. Maybe because I’m a bit of a cynic. But if she even knew I existed, I had the inspiration to write a song written off what I thought was a rumour that she liked me. So, I wrote it and sent it off to her management.

Shania must get a dozen of such requests a day, though.

Right. We went back and forth on it with her management for awhile, and it felt like it wouldn’t be possible. But then I met her at the Grammys and she told me how much she loved me and how much she loved my last album and my voice and how much she loved the song I wrote for her. Two months or so later, we were sitting at her ranch in Las Vegas riding her horses and working on the song together. She was actually the last person I hung out with before the quarantine started.

So many collaborations are done remotely. It’s quite something that you got to do it in person.

I’m such a fan of collaborations. I love that Shania and I got to have what I felt like was a very thrilling, adventurous road to this song. It felt very much in keeping with the spirit of the collaborations that are so rich in the history of country music.

With 'Show Pony,' Orville Peck Solidifies His Place as One of Country's Greats

By Allie Gregory | Exclaim! | August 11, 2020

In the two short years since releasing his debut single "Big Sky," masked heartthrob Orville Peck has experienced a meteoric rise from local scene veteran to verified celebrity. He's largely credited with popularizing 2019's wave of contemporary alt-country — and in closing out that chapter with his latest EP, Show Pony, it's clear that he'll continue demanding the attention he deserves.

His new project — touting a big-get feature from Canadian country icon Shania Twain — is undoubtedly steeped in major-label steez, rocking twangier-than-ever vocals, ballad-focused arrangements and narrative-driven lyrics. The six-track entry is the laid-back answer to Pony's call, but it's filled with just as much power, drama and bravado as its predecessor. Here, Peck recounts the same lonesome cowboy stories that earned him his stripes last year. Having spent hundreds of days of back-to-back touring during his 2019 breakthrough, it seems that he's now had time to reflect on his travels — stepping back from sappy love songs to straight, no-chaser Western grit.

Previously released singles "Summertime" and "No Glory in the West" follow in the steps of his canonical materials, where tracks like "Drive Me Crazy" and "Kids" employ more of his newly-brandished pop sensibilities. The latter tracks evoke the minor-key vulnerability of Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morissette and even Lady Gaga's brief country foray in 2011, Born This Way cut "Yoü and I.

Peck has always shown himself to be an educated appreciator of music, taking to livestreams and gigs to perform covers of classics from Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and Whitney Houston, alongside takes on hits from Ariana Grande, Lana del Rey and FKA twigs. This mixture of old and new classics come together in the record's monumental collaboration with Twain. "Legends Never Die" is as close as you're likely to get to radio country for Peck, which is in no way a means to discredit the effort. It's quite the opposite — where mainstream country is undeniably catchy, albeit soulless, here Peck meets its calibre and rises above it. It's a county-fair-meets-Broadway self-fulfilling prophecy: legends never die. For her contribution, Twain delivers an uncharacteristically gravelly vocal performance on the track, lending to its integrity as a certified future golden oldie.

That considered, Twain's feature isn't even the best song on the record. Rather, it's the album closer, the five-minute rework of Reba McEntire's (Bobbie Gentry-written) "Fancy," that, through Peck's rich baritone, becomes an unmistakable queer anthem: "I knew what I had to do and I made myself this solemn vow / That I's gonna be a lady someday / Though I don't know when or how," he sings. Complete with rattlesnake sound effects and a twisted, ripping guitar solo, the song is a gothic, postmodern take on the hit popularized back in the '90s.

As short a release as it is, the tight six-track EP packs a punch. This is essential material for both country listeners and fans of Orville Peck, who, through his dedication to authenticity in aesthetics, joins the likes of Shania, Reba, Dolly, Johnny, Kenny, Merle, Hank and countless others among the genre's greats. Like his forefathers and mothers, it's Peck's penchant for timelessness that will help the release hold its weight for years to come. (Columbia)

Orville Peck – ‘Show Pony’ EP review: the lone ranger’s second great release on the trot

This six-track record dips into razzle-dazzle pop with Shania Twain, and further perfects the masked country don's knack for evocative gloom

By Leonie Cooper | NME | August 12, 2020

There are many marvellous things about Orville Peck’s new six track EP, ‘Show Pony’, which shimmers as brightly as a cowboy’s pair of freshly polished spurs. The first is to do with the circumstances around its release: originally, we were supposed to hear it two months ago. Ever the activist, Peck delayed the EP’s so that he could spend his time raising money and awareness for the invigorated civil rights movement currently sweeping the States instead.

“We’re undergoing a huge overdue worldwide transformation thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement and that is mainly what I want to put my focus on at the moment,” the masked country singer said on social media at the start of June, keen to swap promo for protest. “The momentum is currently so strong, and it needs to keep going in order to dismantle the injustices of oppression, so if your voice hasn’t been heard yet just use it, or walk out and hear the protesters, and if you’re scared, tell them Orville sent you!”

Now ‘Show Pony’ has finally bolted from the stable, led by a razzle-dazzle duet with fellow Canadian country queen Shania Twain. Perhaps his most pop-leaning track so far, it eskews plugging into the dimly lit world he usually favours. Instead, ‘Legends Never Die’ is a full-on stadium country belter with a knowing wink to both artists’ LGBTQ+ fanbases – “you got nothing if you ain’t got pride,” their voices meet to croon. As flashy and ’90s as his iconic collaborator, Peck puts it even more simply: “as the kids say – it’s a bop.”

All out pop bop it might be, but the rest of ‘Show Pony’ trots around the same moody Roy Orbison territory that Peck perfected on last year’s ‘Pony’. First up is Proustian power ballad ‘Summertime’, while pensive piano and talk of empty highways and burning rubber give ‘Drive Me Crazy’ the feel of ‘Nebraska’-era Bruce Springsteen doing his best boy racer impression. And ‘No Glory In The West’ takes things down another notch, the simple strumming of an acoustic campfire guitar letting Peck’s melodramatic baritone and downbeat storytelling take centre stage.

‘Show Pony’s final furlong comes as an atmospheric version of Bobbie Gentry’s sassy anthem ‘Fancy ‘– possibly the only Grammy nominated song from the 1970s about a small town sex worker. Doomy and delicious, Peck’s powerful retelling doesn’t just let his stupidly good vocals shine, but also his innate showmanship. Someone cast this man in a movie already. Zorro: The Nashville Years, anyone?

Here Peck says of the ranch being located in Las Vegas. It's kind of confusing really as there were mentions that she had spent self-isolation period somewhere in Canada, weren't there? So where's the ranch?

First Shania was at her ranch in Las Vegas then apparently she went somewhere in Canada.

The song is available on iTunes in Australia and New Zealand. Here is an official preview clip someone posted on Twitter. I've heard the entire song. I like it!!! I hear Lady Gaga's "You And I" in the song.

I like it too. I was trying to be optimistic about it because I’m not a very big fan of Orville. But Shania’s strong presence in the song is great and I like the vibe. She sounds great!

I've bought the song and I liked it very much. I'd like to know who's the producer because I wouldn't mind if she recorded something in that style for her own. Awersome really. As czm888, I wasn't expecting anything special, because I wasn't familiar with Orville at all and he seems a little bit weird with the mask. But the song is awersome. It's gonna be on repeat all day!

Orville says he wrote and produced all the tracks, with a few exceptions. Whatever that means.

I’ve been listening to this song all day today! It’s really grown on me! I do love Shania’s slightly raspy voice. I can’t help but reflect on how much her voice has changed from 2011 when she recorded “Endless Love” and “Today is Your Day,” but wow, can she still bring on the performance, slightly different, but oh so sweet! I am hopeful that Shania does more duets, that is something she missed out on earlier in her career, mainly because Mutt had to be tied in somehow in the production, which was a little sad looking back. Shania is totally loose and free now!
