Shania Twain’s Message for International Women’s Day: ‘We Can Do It All, Ladies’

Shania Twain acknowledged International Women's Day on Monday (March 8) with a special episode of her radio show, Home Now Radio on Apple Music. In addition to sharing some of her favorite anecdotes, songs and memories from her fellow women of country music, she offered up surprising tidbits about some of country's female legends who also happen to be her real-life gal pals, such as Wynonna Judd.

"Wynonna and I, we text often back and forth," Twain reveals. In addition to being a prolific solo performer, Judd is also one half of superstar mother-daughter duo the Judds alongside her mom, Naomi.

Beyond the female artists she's personally come to know and love, Twain made sure to mention the trailblazers whose iconic songs laid a foundation for feminist anthems in country music. As the star behind anthemic girl power classics like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" and "That Don't Impress Me Much," Twain has a unique appreciation for the women who came before her and set a precedent for those kinds of songs.

"If you know country music, then you would probably know that 'Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad' is considered one of Tammy Wynette's signature hits. It's been given attention for its strong feminine lyrics," Twain points out during her show. "I remember being very attracted to that element of the song, just her putting her foot down. I just remember thinking, 'Whoa, that's sassy.'"

That song — and others like it — has lessons to share that extend far beyond country music, Twain explains. "I think that women are misunderstood a lot of the time just because we have maybe even so far as to say feminist views, or to say that we stand up for ourselves with courage and defiance almost ... Sometimes we just do have to put our foot down and put it down hard, but that doesn't mean that we don't love the men in our lives, and that we don't need the men in our lives," she says.

"Did you know that we can be beautiful inside and out, and still be smart and talented at the same time? Ha! Who knew?" the '90s hitmaker goes on to say. "We can do it all, ladies. That's what I say. We can do it all."

While Twain was influenced by a number of legendary country women like Wynette, she's become something of a legend herself to younger artists breaking into the genre. Kelsea Ballerini has been especially vocal about what a hero Twain is to her, and the pair even collaborated on a duet version of the younger star's "Hole in the Bottle."

During Monday's episode of Twain's radio show, Ballerini called in to wish Twain a happy International Women's Day and express how much her music has meant to a younger generation of artists and listeners, herself included.

"Ah, that makes my long road to my own success very worth it," Twain says in response. "To be complimented by not only another artist, but another female artist. We need each other, women. We need each other."

Shania Twain ‘Will Be Calling’ Nick Jonas Soon To ‘Make Some More Music’

Shania Twain is not sleeping on a possible Nick Jonas collaboration.

Twain signed onto the latest episode of “Home Now Radio” on Apple Music. During the conversation, the five-time Grammy-winner touched on a team-up with the youngest Jonas brother (excluding Frankie Jonas). 

“If you’re a Jonas Brother, you must feel cool all the time. Right?” Twain dished. “Like I would think so. Anyway, I don’t know, but they are cool. Now I would consider Nick Jonas, a friend of mine. He is a sweetheart, and you know, we’ve crossed paths a couple of times.”

“We’ve done some things together, musically, and you know, it’s just a fun, cool friendship that we’ve got, and I look forward to doing more together,” she continued. “So Nick, I will be calling out to you soon so we can get together and make some more music. How about that? That would be so cool, wouldn’t it?”

Twain has not been shy about her love for Haim and continued to promote them on Apple Music.

“This family band is fabulous. It’s a fabulous family band. I love these guys. These girls are superb musicians and they are excellent songwriters,” the Canadian legend gushed. “Talented show women and great singers with a beautiful, beautiful family blend. I was so flattered to be on their radio show. They also have an Apple Music radio show, which is so cool.”

“We chatted and had a few great laughs. Just talked music and reminded each other how much we wanted to get together and make music together,” she concluded. “And we will do that.”

Shania Twain’s Admiration of Wynonna Judd Turned Into a Lifelong Friendship

Shania Twain has had one of the biggest careers in country music, but she might not have even been a country music singer, if not for Wynonna Judd. The Canadian native recently opened up about how her early years were inspired by The Judds, and especially Wynonna’s signature voice.

“I was following The Judds so closely when they came out because I was yet to come out and Wynonna being in — she’s a similar age to me,” Twain said on Apple Music Hits’ Home Now Radio. “And I guess I would say I looked up to her and I was inspired by her. I mean, incredible vocalist, and her and her mom were just beautiful together vocally. People that I would consider salt of the earth. Honest, straightforward. They’re very loving, they’re fun, and just really easy to get to know.”

Twain’s childhood was anything but idyllic. She grew up amid poverty in Ontario, Canada, later raising her siblings by herself after her parents were tragically killed.

“Music was always a great escape for me and I very often would run away, close to home, just in the neighboring bush or in the backyard, somewhere in a corner with my guitar and escape what was going on at home,” Twain earlier revealed to Home Now Radio. “Which was, either there wasn’t enough food for dinner, so I figured I might as well go occupy myself doing something else so I’m not thinking about not eating. Or I was just escaping the fight between my parents and the violence that that always, most often erupted into.

“So music was a great escape and a place for me to lose myself and imagine and dream of being anywhere else,” she added. “I could make up stories and escape into those stories and it was wonderful therapy.”

Little did Twain imagine that her childhood inspiration would ultimately result in a lifelong friendship.

“I’m friends with Wynonna,” Twain reveals. “Her and I text regularly, checking up on each other, making sure we’re all doing okay. Talk about her kids. Talk about what’s growing in the garden, flowers. We send pictures to each other of what we’re picking and stuff. She likes to grow vegetables and things like that. So she’s always pulling up stuff from her garden and I’m often just taking photos of my bouquets from my garden and we send them to each other. It’s kind of fun.”

Shania Twain Shares the Reason She Changed Her Name

Shania Twain is a household name, but some of the country icon's fans might not know that the moniker is not her real name. Twain was born Eilleen Regina Edwards, and when she was adopted by her stepfather, she took his last name of Twain. During a recent episode of her Home Now Radio show on Apple Music Hits, the Canadian star explained her decision to change her name, sharing that she wanted something that felt like her own when she was on stage.

"A lot of celebrities are born with a different name than they end up with as a stage name, and I'm one of those people," Twain said. "It's actually a long story. In short, I was born, Eilleen Regina Edwards, and then I was adopted and I became Eilleen Regina Twain. Then I became a professional singer and I needed a stage name that sounded a little less like my grandmother's name because I'm named after my grandmother, both my grandmothers, Eilleen and Regina. I think, in my mind, I was just not really wanting to be called my grandmother's name on stage, so I decided to change it to Shania Twain. I met somebody with the name Shania, thought it was beautiful, and Shania Twain was born."

The 55-year-old is currently working on her upcoming album, which she hopes will be released later this year. Twain is the best-selling female artist in country music history, which means she knows a thing or two about writing hits, and she revealed a few of her tricks on the latest episode of her show. "Songwriting is not easy," she said. "It's easy if you are not setting out with high goals, but of course, when I'm writing a song, my goals are super high." Twain explained that she uses a mental checklist to make sure the finished product is something she wants to release.

"I'm trying to write a song that is almost like I have a checklist a little bit. Is this a subject that is going to be relatable to a lot of people?" she continued. "Second thing on the checklist is, is it singable. Even without the lyrics or even if I don't really relate to the story, do I want to sing along with this song. Third thing on the checklist is, will it make the listener feel the way I want them to feel. So I've always got an idea about my intentions behind the song. So do I want the song to make people feel happy? Do I want it to make them reflect on their pain? Do I want it to help them become energized? Do I want them to feel empowered somehow by this song? Do I want it to be uplifting? These are the three things."

"It's like a private joke. You get it yourself," Twain added. "But do other people get it, or are other people can relate to it, are we all going to be in sync together? This is very important. So this is when I know the song is ready when it meets this checklist."

Leslie Jordan Tells Shania Twain 'God Made Me' Gay, Why He 'Quit Going' to Church: 'I'm Not a Mistake'

Earlier this year, the actor released his album Company's Comin', which is filled with country songs and gospel hymns

Leslie Jordan is reflecting on his sexuality and his relationship with the church.

In an interview with Shania Twain on the first anniversary of her Home Now Radio show on Apple Music Hits, Jordan, 66, opened up about his childhood and what it was like to be gay growing up in a religious family, as he talked about his recently released Company's Comin'. (The episode airs at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.)

"I say this for myself, that music was always my savior. I wouldn't say the music was my religion, but it was a safe zone where I wasn't judged," Twain, 55, told Jordan. "I could express myself and it was escapism for me as well. Growing up in a family that believed very much that God was going to be there to help you through things and then also having the music, what an inspiring way to grow up."

Exactly," Jordan responded. "When I'm being very dramatic, I say, 'Well, I grew up in the church, but I walked away,' because the whole gay thing came around. I firmly believe that God made me this way. I'm not a mistake."

"This is not my cross to bear. It's part of what I am and I want to celebrate that, but when you grow up and you're just so scared… But I never walked away from the church," he added. "I just quit going."

Reflecting on his childhood, Jordan — who stars on Call Me Kat — spoke about how he faced bullies during his childhood: through comedy.

"I learned very early to be funny to keep the bullies at bay. The minute they started bullying me, I could make them laugh," he said. "That was my defense mechanism."

Jordan then told a story about when he told his parents he no longer wanted to go to Sunday school because other kids would laugh at him.

"[My dad] got down on one knee and he explained to me the difference between laughing at me and laughing with me. And he said, 'You've been given a gift. And that's the ability to make people laugh,'" Jordan said. "He recognized it even before I did, that I was this funny kid. I didn't know. So, I think over the years I've thought of that and... What a gift."

"What a gift to be able to make people laugh, to have a talent for that because you can tell a joke and somebody else can tell that same joke, and if they don't have the rhythm, whatever it is that comedians have... It's like music. We hear the music. It's the rhythm," he continued.

Talking about his album — which features several gospel songs and country hits — Jordan said the album featured songs he grew up with and has a connection to.
