Shania to guest star on new TV series "Monarch" - September 20

Shania will probably be in one episode.

New Country Drama Series 'Monarch' Will Guest Star Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Tanya Tucker and More

Premiering Sept. 11, the FOX show will follow Susan Sarandon as the Queen of Country Music as she will "do whatever it takes to protect the family"

By Alexis Jones | PEOPLE | August 17, 2022

All hail the royal family of country music!

The trailer for the new FOX series Monarch dropped Wednesday, which marks the rise of the reigning family in country music and the great lengths they will go to maintain their untarnished musical legacy.

Starring Susan Sarandon, Trace Adkins and Anna Friel, the series also features guest appearances from country stars Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Tanya Tucker and Little Big Town.

Based in Texas, the trailer opens with shots of the leading cast members as Sarandon's character, Dottie Cantrell Roman narrates, "We are the first family of country music, now and forever."

"I never wanted to just be a star. I want to create a dynasty, and I have," she continues. "But the strength to do whatever it takes to protect the family, well, we have to work on that."

The bright lights of life onstage are then juxtaposed by the dark woods of night in which Adkins' Albie Roman clicks his gun into position, declaring, "A Roman never forgets an enemy."

The trailer cuts back to their daughter Nicolette "Nicky" Roman (Friel), urging Dottie that "It is a sin." Her mother then quips, "If there's a hell, I booked my ticket years ago."

The teaser highlights more clips of the showbiz glitz and glam that the Romans live as the leading family in country music, along with secrets that could unravel and jeopardize their dynastic plan.

"Most people should tell the truth, but we are not most people. We're the Romans," a voice can be overheard saying.

Shots of what look to be promiscuous love and business affairs, burying dead bodies into self-made graves and setting ablaze buildings that are not completely evacuated heighten the stakes of the rise and potential fall of the Romans' empire.

"We come from such different worlds," one female character says, to which Ace Grayson (Iñigo Pascual) responds, "We're just like any other super famous, over-privileged, always in the public eye family."

The trailer further alludes to the struggles that each family member will face, primarily the aspirations of Nicky to follow in her mother's footsteps.

"You've very talented, but you're not her," one character tells her. "I will be," Nicky rebuttals.

"Your mama didn't become an icon by playing nice, neither will you," another voice says as the trailer shows Dottie slapping a man across the face.

A Roman rivalry is also teased as Nicky and Gigi Taylor-Roman (Beth Ditto) battle it out for the reigning spot as the up-and-coming family monarch.

"You stayed out of the spotlight because you thought you'd outshine me?" Nicky asks.

"Well, there can only be one queen," Gigi replies. "Bring it on, sister."

As the trailer features more telling dialogue that speaks to the Romans' ruthlessness, son Luke Roman (Joshua Sasse) seems to capture it best as there is "never a dull moment."

Clips from the teaser show not only musical performances from idol Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Tanya Tucker and Little Big Town, but also their acting chops as guest stars in the series.

"Heavy is the head that wears the crown, baby," Dottie can be heard saying to Nicky, as they admire her daughter wearing a white bedazzled cowboy hat in the mirror.

Finally, the trailer ends on a more ironic note with a reporter asking Dottie Cantrell, "You've been the queen of country music for nearly 40 years. In all that time, any regrets?"

Cutting back and forth between Sarandon firing a gun to her response: "No ma'am, not a one."

Monarch premieres Sept. 11 on FOX.

Shania to guest star on new TV series "Monarch"

I don't know if this is the case in other countries, but the video is not available in France (blocked). I found the trailer on Youtube anyway, here is the link. I guess it's the same thing. Shania appears stealthily at 2:08.

Susan Sarandon’s ‘Monarch’ Is So Bad It Officially Killed the Network Drama

The country-music soap opera is the latest meager attempt to deliver anything besides a procedural drama to broadcast audiences. It’s so terrible, it may end up being the last.

By Coleman Spilde, Entertainment Critic | The Daily Beast | September 8, 2022

...In Monarch’s second episode, Dottie and Nicky cover Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” together onstage. “Wow, that was a great cover,” I thought to myself. Moments later, a Shania Twain cameo completely throws every fact I’ve held dear in life into question when she tells Nicky that Dottie swiped “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” out from under her as soon as Twain got the suspicion that it could be her big hit. This one single moment sent me into such a tizzy that I’m still working to recover. How is Shania even Shania in the universe of Monarch without the earth-shattering power of “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” to shepherd her? It was like watching Julia Roberts play herself in Ocean’s 12 all over again.

***Shania will guest-star and make a cameo in Episode 2 which will air Tuesday, September 20 at 9:00pm ET/PT on FOX.

“Monarch” will debut on Sunday, Sept. 11 immediately after the NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. It will then shift to Tuesday nights beginning Sept. 20 in the 9 p.m. slot immediately after returning medical drama “The Resident.”

Monarch's Joshua Sasse Details the "Surreal" Experience He Had Working With Shania Twain

The new Fox drama Monarch welcomes some country music heavy hitters to the screen. In an exclusive chat with E! News, star Joshua Sasse talks about working with the legendary Shania Twain.

By Daniel Trainor | E! News | September 11, 2022

Shania Twain is still the one.

On the new Fox drama Monarch, premiering Sept. 11, Twain and fellow country superstars Martina McBride, Tanya Tucker and Little Big Town make guest appearances as themselves throughout the season.

Monarch stars Susan Sarandon as fictional country music legend Dottie Cantrell Roman, the head of the powerful Roman family whose scandalous dealings in and outside of the music industry are the talk of Nashville.

While working with Sarandon—and an ensemble cast featuring Trace Adkins, Anna Friel and Beth Ditto—provided the bulk of the juicy drama, for Joshua Sasse, who plays Dottie's son and the CEO of Monarch Entertainment Luke Roman, it was one of the show's A-list guest stars who really got him flustered.

"It was surreal for me working with Shania, because Shania is playing Shania," Sasse exclusively told E! News. "We had a scene in her dressing room and we rehearsed on set, so we hadn't really met each other before we went straight into this rehearsal."

The entire thing made for quite the out-of-body experience for Sasse.

"My character is calling her Shania and she's there in full regalia," he said. "I don't know if you'll see it on camera, but I was pissing myself because it's Shania Twain! And I'm calling her Shania! I was just giggling. That's the wonderful thing about this job. You get to be in the most extraordinary circumstances."

Of course, acting alongside Oscar winner Sarandon provided an entirely different challenge—namely, trying to not get swallowed up by her aura.

"She's so fearless," Sasse said of his co-star. "I was palpably aware of saturating every single minutiae of that performance because it's so nuanced. At once, she's totally effortless. At the time time, she's giving an enormous amount of information with just the slightest inflections and movements. It's just like an internal masterclass."

It turns out that Sasse's obvious reverence for Sarandon blossomed into a lovely relationship that went far beyond the confines of the set, touching the lives of Sasse's wife Louisa Ainsworth and their two children.

"Me and Susan became really, really close friends," Sasse said. "The minute she flew into town, she came straight from the airport to my house and we'd have dinner every night. She got on really well with my wife and my kids just adore her. We all call her ‘Honey.' She'd open the door and my son would say, ‘Honey!' We formed this really, really wonderful friendship."

Monarch premieres Sept. 11 after the NFL on FOX.

Arista Records/Monument Records release second ‘Monarch’ EP

By Buddy Iahn | The Music Universe | September 17, 2022

Shania Twain guest stars on Sept 20th

Arista Records/Monument Records, the official music partner of Fox Entertainment’s highly anticipated new series, Monarch – a new country music drama about America’s leading family of country music – has released the show’s latest EP featuring music from the show’s upcoming second episode. Set to make its time period premiere on Tuesday, September 20th from 9-10 pm ET/PT, the new episode features a special guest-star, 5x GRAMMY Award winning country music superstar Shania Twain.

The second EP for the new hit show includes original track “The Card You Gamble,” performed by Monarch cast members including Golden Globe nominee Anna Friel and Beth Ditto, as well as a cover of Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” performed by the Monarch cast. Additional covers of country classics featured in the EP include “Ain’t No Sunshine,” performed by Callum Kerr, “Love Can Build A Bridge,” performed by Faith Bridge and “Photograph,” performed by multi-Platinum country music star and 3x Academy of Country Music (ACM) Award winner Trace Adkins (“Old Henry”) alongside Iñigo Pascual.

The songs were produced by three-time GRAMMY Award nominee and series executive music producer Adam Anders and co-produced by Peer Åström.

The new music follows the release of last week’s Episode One EP and a number of tracks from the show, including “American Cowgirl,” performed by Friel, a cover of “A Country Boy Can Survive” by Adkins, as well as the show’s theme song, “The Card You Gamble,” performed by powerhouse vocalist Caitlyn Smith. The series will feature many original songs and covers performed by cast members and upcoming guest stars.

Monarch made its long-awaited debut with a special two-night event that started on September 11th immediately following the Fox NFL doubleheader. It then makes its time period premiere Tuesday, September 20th from 9-10 pm ET/PT, following the season six debut of The Resident.

In the series, the Roman family is headed by the insanely talented, but tough-as-nails Queen of Country Music Dottie Cantrell Roman (Susan Sarandon) and her beloved husband, “Texas Truthteller” Albie Romain (Adkins). Dottie and Albie have created a country music dynasty. But even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. And when their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

Middle child Luke Roman (Joshua Sasse, Galavant) is the CEO of the family’s business, Monarch Entertainment. Luke is the apple of his mother’s eye, but he has a troubled relationship with his father, whose approval he can never get, no matter how hard he tries. Youngest daughter Gigi Tucker-Roman (Ditto, On Becoming a God in Central Florida) is very close to her older brother and sister, but in a family of superstars, Gigi has always felt like a bit of an outcast, in spite of her incredible singing voice. Gigi is married to Kayla Roman-Tucker (Meagan Holder, Dave, Pitch), a successful music manager who keeps turning down Luke’s offers to join forces with the family company.

Outside business, Kayla’s relationships with the Romans reflect a complicated history, and a secret she is keeping could destroy her marriage to Gigi. Ace Grayson (Hollywood newcomer and Filipino recording artist Inigo Pascual) also is part of the family. He is a talented and sensitive 18-year-old who was adopted from an orphanage by Nicky and her husband, struggling British actor Clive Grayson (guest star Adam Croasdell, Preacher, Reign). Ace is a phenomenal singer with real swagger on stage, and dreams of being a country star like his Grandpa Albie. And just when the Romans’ world couldn’t get more chaotic, enter Catt Phoenix (Martha Higareda, Into The Dark: Culture Shock), the stunning and unpredictable mother of 17-year-old Ana Phoenix (Emma Milani, Solve), a talented, wide-eyed young singer who is trying to get signed to the Roman family’s record label.

The series was originally set to premiere on January 30th, immediately following the NFC Championship, but was pushed back due to rising COVID cases that would’ve likely impact production and its airing of new episodes. The entire first season has been fully produced before going to air. Special guest stars include Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Little Big Town and Tanya Tucker.

Monarch is one hundred percent owned and produced by Fox Entertainment. Screenwriter Melissa London Hilfers serves as creator, writer and executive producer. Jon Harmon Feldman serves as executive producer and showrunner. Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady (The Jackal Group), Michael Rauch and top music manager Jason Owen (Sandbox Entertainment) also serve as executive producers. Jason Ensler directed the series premiere, on which he also serves as an executive producer.

Preview Shania Twain's Defiant 'Monarch' Appearance [Exclusive]

By Billy Dukes | Taste of Country | September 19, 2022

Shania Twain is nobody's impersonator! During a short clip that previews her role on Ep. 2 of Monarch, fans see the country music superstar putting her foot down on a song performance.

The next episode of Monarch on FOX airs on Tuesday night at 9PM ET. Twain is the second country singer to make a cameo appearance, following Martina McBride's spot in the debut. During this clip, Twain is objecting to performing one of Dottie Cantrell-Roman's songs, "Dixie Kitten."

"What do I look like, an impersonator?" she asks. Dottie Cantrell-Roman is Susan Sarandon's character on Monarch. She and her husband Albie Roman (Trace Adkins) are the King and Queen of Country Music on the show.

Twain's assistant calms her anxiety by reminding the singer that she's an icon who should put her own spin on the song.

While much of the music used throughout Monarch is known hits, "Dixie Kitten" is not a known song. However, the show has been releasing new music to correspond with each episode. "The Brambles" was part of a 5-song EP that dropped on Sept. 9. "American Cowgirl" is another original.

Little Big Town and Tanya Tucker are two more country acts who will appear during Season 1 of Monarch. The debut episode aired on Sept. 11 and became FOX's biggest debut for a scripted drama in three years.
