Chris Wallace Sets HBO Max Return, Interview Show Will Air Weekly on CNN

Wallace's interview show was originally part of the CNN+ streaming lineup, but will return with new episodes on HBO Max September 23.

By Alex Weprin | The Hollywood Reporter | September 6, 2022

After a five month hiatus, Chris Wallace is ready to ask more questions.

The CNN anchor, whose streaming show was pulled when the channel shuttered the short-lived CNN+ service, will return on a much larger streaming platform later this month: HBO Max.

CNN says that the new season of Wallace’s interview show, Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, will debut its first 3 episodes on HBO Max September 23. The best moments from those 3 episodes will then be turned into a one-hour TV show that will air on CNN Sunday, Sept. 25.

That format will continue throughout the 10-week first season, with three full-length interviews dropping on HBO Max on Fridays, and Wallace hosting a best-of show on Sunday evenings at 7 PM on CNN. Among the interviews lined up are actor-director Tyler Perry, Musician Shania Twain, author James Patterson, and baseball star turned businessman and broadcaster Alex Rodriguez, with others to follow. His CNN+ show counted former Disney CEO Bob Iger and White House press secretary Jen Psaki among the interviewees.

The new show will likely see a far wider audience than Wallace’s CNN+ show, with that news streaming service having a subscriber count in the thousands and no linear option. HBO Max and HBO had about 77 million subscribers as of May 1, while the CNN linear channel will make the show available in another 80 or so million homes.

CNN describes it as a “first-of-its kind partnership between the two storied brands” that “moves beyond the traditional boundaries of streaming and cable.”

“Chris Wallace is a legend in our profession. His unparalleled interviewing expertise has made an impact across industries and changed history,” said Chris Licht, CNN’s Chairman and CEO, in a statement. “And now with the launch of his program on both HBO Max and CNN, his iconic interview style will reach an expansive audience unlike anything before.”

Wallace, the former anchor of Fox News Sunday, left the channel at the end of last year to join CNN+, which was a top priority for its then-president Jeff Zucker. However, new leadership in Licht and new ownership in Warner Bros. Discovery opted to nix the subscription streaming effort. Licht announced in May that Wallace would return to CNN on Sundays, positioning the interview show as a centerpiece of what will be a new Sunday lineup.

Is the show an entire hour of a Shania interview or Tyler Perry as well? I also thought it was being aired on CNN as well

As I understand it, HBO Max airs the full interviews beginning Friday and then CNN airs an one-hour show on Sunday night with the "best of" the three interviews. I guess they are shortened.

Shania Twain feels 'stronger than ever' ahead of new album release

By Sophie Tremblay | CNN | September 23, 2022

Shania Twain's life could make a hell of a country music song.

In fact, there's so much material it could make several great country music songs. She survived a tough childhood, lost her parents in a car crash and at the height of her career, was diagnosed with Lyme Disease -- an illness that temporarily caused her to lose her voice. And then, in the middle of her recovery, her husband left her for another woman.

But Twain says those hardships have brought her to where she is today.

"Every time something brings me down or tries to bring me down, it fuels more determination. I'm feeling stronger than ever now in my life. And, and it feels good," Twain told CNN's Chris Wallace in a conversation for his new show, "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?"

The program debuts Friday on HBOMax and also airs Sunday night on CNN.

Twain is currently working on her sixth full-length solo project, her first solo album since 2017. Her first single from the album, "Waking Up Dreaming" also debuts Friday.

She calls her new music "just the start" of a "new chapter".

"It is a long way from country," she admitted of the song. "It's high-energy boppy-poppy. In the video, I'm very much playing superstar, I am dressing up. And having a lot of fun with fashion and looks like never before. It's indulgent for me."

It's far from the first time that the Grammy-winning artist has taken risks with her songs and music videos.

The music video for "Any Man of Man" off her second album in which Twain bears her midriff attracted a lot of attention from both fans and critics. While the album was the bestselling country album that year and won a Grammy, purists said her music wasn't country enough.

"[They said] I'm a lap dancer. No, you can't show your midriff. You're gonna offend everyone, you're gonna offend the women because they're going to be turned off by you and going to turn off the men because you have this attitude toward men," she recalled industry executives telling her. "But I just had to ignore that and go with my own my own vision. Trust in that."

Her trust in her own vision has led to 18 Grammy nominations and earned her the title of one of the best-selling artists of all time.

"I had a really giant dream. From a very small child. I don't know if I would have ever been satisfied not going for that dream," she told Wallace.

For seven years I thought 'my career is over'

Twain's 'giant' dream was almost crushed in 2004 when she was diagnosed with Lyme disease, in which she developed dysphonia, a vocal-cord disorder that makes speech, let alone singing, difficult.

"It was an unreasonable amount of work and pressure to sustain as a recording artist any longer. So I could do a little one off things, but with so much work behind it, I thought, no, I could never be a genuine recording artist anymore. And get out there and sing it live," she said.

Twain eventually had surgery. While the operation was a risk, the singer said it was something she had to try.

"I would have had to stop my singing career, so I'm like, 'Oh, of course, I'll try this.' And boy, can I yell now," she said.

Amid dealing with her vocal troubles, Twain found out her husband at the time, had been having an affair with her best friend.

"[There were] definitely moments when I wanted to picked up and plunked somewhere on another planet," she told Wallace. "Music was always my great escape but because I couldn't sing during that time, I didn't have an escape anymore."

In a twist, she eventually married Frédéric Thiébaud, the ex-husband of the woman her first husband had been having an affair with. Twain credits Thiébaud for being important to her recovery.

"I'm getting to the bottom of how to get my voice back again and I'm feeling empowered. I'm remarried. My husband is an incredible support," Twain said.

"I've got an incredible son, so I'm starting to feel my life is coming back together in a very bright and sunny way."

They only aired 10 minutes of Shania's interview on CNN Sunday night. She talked about Come On Over being the best-selling album, Lyme Disease, Mutt's divorce, and "Waking Up Dreaming". The full 30-minute interview is on HBO Max but I don't have a subscription.

HBO Max is having a Black Friday sale ($1.99 for 3 months). So I downloaded Shania's full 30-minute interview on "Who's Talking To Chris Wallace?"

Shania to be inteviewed on

Since she talked about it in the interview, I'll mention it here but I've always been confused about the timeline of her voice issues. Because she sounded like her former self during her first Vegas residency and then her voice became the way it is today near when the 'Now' era started. So when exactly did she have the first surgery?

Her voice is a real mystery. Personally I didn't understand anything about the timeline.
We know for sure she had a surgery right before the Now Tour. When she sang "I'm Alright" at the Today Show she had a red scarf around her neck to cover the scar on her throat.
But lately she said she went under another surgery right before the Queen of Me album recording session and her voice is way stronger than before. But I can't find differences between these new songs and the NOW ones. Maybe a little better on the "Last Day of Summer" song though.

I wish she would have recorded an album during the first residency because her voice still sounded much like her former voice did then. I don't understand waiting another five years to record 'Now' after that.

Why do people find the timeline weird? I have family in the industry who actually understand this … and it isn’t that uncommon . Think about Celine and the treatments to her voice. And Pink.

Shania was not confident during her first residency , so totally makes sense why she didn’t record an album! Probably continued to wreck her voice without treatment (which other artists have done). If she WAS doing these things, but had other issues too… she would have additional trauma that would make it worse!

All in All (lol), I am just confused about the voice changes after the first residency. She said she had those "crutches" put in which I wouldn't think would have changed her voice as drastically as it did. With treatments Céline and P!nk might have had, it didn't change their voices to sound like a completely different person like Shania's. Yeah, there are moments that she sounds like her former self but other times it's so different. I wish she did a documentary on the whole thing because I find it fascinating.

Thank you for explaining more in depth. I think a documentary would be really fascinating, if she was willing to do so
