And of course, I would be remiss if I didn't pay tribute to the iconic Angela Lansbury, I mean she IS Mrs. Potts and the reason why this character is so beloved. ABC’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Special Adds Martin Short, David Alan Grier, Shania Twain

The live event will also feature Rizwan Manji, Jon Jon Briones and Leo Abelo Perry.

ABC is rounding out the cast of its live Beauty and the Beast special.

The Dec. 15 special, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the film’s best picture nomination — the first animated feature to earn that honor — has added Martin Short, David Alan Grier, Shania Twain, Rizwan Manji, Jon Jon Briones and Leo Abelo Perry to its cast. They join an ensemble led by Grammy winner H.E.R. as Belle and Josh Groban as the Beast; Joshua Henry also stars, and Rita Moreno will narrate the special. 

Only Murders in the Building star Short will play Lumiere. Tony winner Grier (A Solider’s Play, The Patient) will play Cogsworth, while Grammy winner and country music star Twain will play Mrs. Potts and Perry her son, Chip. Manji (Schitt’s Creek) plays Gaston’s (Henry) sidekick, LeFou, and Briones (Ratched) will play Belle’s father, Maurice.

The special, which ABC ordered in July, will feature a mix of live action and animation and new musical performances along with sets and costumes inspired by the movie. Jon M. Chu (In the Heights, Wicked) is executive producing, and Grammys and Super Bowl halftime show helmer Hamish Hamilton will direct.

Done + Dusted is producing the special with Walt Disney Television Alternative and Electric Somewhere. Caitlin Foito, Hamilton, Raj Kapoor, Richard Kraft and Katy Mullan also executive produce. H.E.R. serves as producer.

So apparently the special won't be AIRING live. Instead it will be RECORDED live over several days later this month in Burbank, California.

WHAT IS THE AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE? If selected, you will be a part of a few performances taped each day. Because the performances are recorded over several days, you will not see all performances nor the original animated film. Our shooting format is block and shoot, so there will be quite a bit of waiting / downtime in between scenes.

It looks like Shania was at ABC/Disney studios today in Los Angeles. Rehearsals are probably starting. They start recording the "Beauty and the Beast" special next week.

Looks like an early start to the day at ABC/Disney studios today in Los Angeles. "Beauty and the Beast" recording probably wraps up this week. Then Shania flies to Washington D.C. to record the "National Christmas Tree Lighting" special next Wednesday (November 30). It airs on December 11.

The song that Shania sings on Beauty and the beast does that get released as a single/promotion to promote the movie? I have seen many artists release songs that way in the past. Unsure how that works. Anyone know? It is a movie correct not a live stage production

ABC is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast with an epic TV spectacle featuring some of Hollywood’s most incredible stars. Music legend Shania Twain will be playing the role of Mrs. Potts in the TV special. She does a complete transformation to play the wise teapot.

Shania’s Mrs. Potts costume is the definition of extravagant. Part of Shania’s skirt is shaped like an actual teapot, with a spout and everything. The teapot is purple and white with stunning gold detailing. Beneath the teapot is a purple and gold skirt.

The upper portion of the costume is a fitted bodice in a gorgeous light blue hue with gold embellishments. She tops her Mrs. Potts costume off with a purple and gold hat. Shania is rocking blonde hair for her special with purple highlights.

Mrs. Potts’ adorable son Chip is played by Lea Abelo Perry. He has a teacup costume as well. They are part of the amazing ensemble cast that includes H.E.R. as Belle, Josh Groban as The Beast, Martin Short as Lumiere, David Alan Grier as Cogsworth, and more.

The role of Mrs. Potts was originated by the late Angela Lansbury in the 1991 Disney animated movie Beauty and the Beast. In addition to voicing the role of Mrs. Potts, Angela performed the title song, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Emma Thompson played Mrs. Potts in the 2017 live-action movie.

When ABC announced that she had been cast as Mrs. Potts, the country singer took to Instagram to celebrate. “I am unbelievably honoured… and excited… and all of the emotions(!!) to announce that I will be joining the cast of #BeautyAndTheBeast30th to play the part of my favourite character – Mrs. Potts,” she wrote. “And of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t pay tribute to the iconic Angela Lansbury, I mean she IS Mrs. Potts and the reason why this character is so beloved. Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration will feature live-action performances woven into an airing of the animated film. The special will air December 15 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

That task of bringing something new while honoring something old was perhaps most challenging for Shania Twain, as her new take on Mrs. Potts comes only a few months after the actress behind the original voice performance, Angela Lansbury, died. "I was only more honored to be asked to play that role," she says of having to fill Lansbury's spout. "It made singing the theme song very emotional for me. But Alan Menken was on stage with me playing the piano, and that comforted me a great deal. It was such an epic moment in my career to perform his own song with him there next to me. It was important to me to play the role with style and grace. A sense of humor, inspired by Angela's charm. I kept Angela in mind the whole time."
