Why Shania Twain decided to do this one thing differently each show
The Queen of Me Tour hits the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 28 and Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert on Wednesday, May 31.

As Shania Twain was coming up with song ideas for a new album, she wanted to create something to uplift her own mood.
The COVID-19 pandemic had just hit, and as she was hunkered down at home, she felt inspired to “put a little up in my giddy,” said Twain during a recent phone interview.
The end result was the single “Giddy Up!” off of her sixth studio album, “Queen of Me,” which dropped earlier this year. It’s an upbeat, country dance-pop tune, drenched in feel-good vibes that gave Twain her first Top 10 single in years.
“The whole album, ‘Queen of Me,’ ended up being very much in that same spirit,” she continued. “It was like, ‘OK, come on, it’s time to cheer up!’”
That sentiment has translated well to the live show, Twain insists, as she kicked off the tour on April 28 in Washington. It’s also very different from her Let’s Go! Las Vegas residency, which played inside Zappos Theater from late 2019 through September 2022.
“It’s been fabulous,” she said of the tour so far. “We’re having a lot of fun and the crowds are in great spirits and I’m energized by sharing this music. It’s a variety of music, and that’s really fun for me because I’m doing stuff from way, way back and then new stuff; it’s just a mix of everything.”
because she knows fans like to take lots of pictures and post videos of the shows on social media, she likes to change things up a bit at each stop to keep it fresh.
“I’ve styled all of the wardrobe myself, so there’s always something unique and different,” Twain shared. “They’re all one-offs so you couldn’t spoil it for yourself even if you did go online and look.”
Along with some of her biggest hits like “Any Man of Mine,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” Twain has peppered new music into the current setlist including “Giddy Up!,” “Pretty Liar,” “Waking Up Dreaming,” “Inhale/Exhale Air,” “Pretty Liar” and the album title track.
“Queen of Me,” and its extended version, which features additional songs and remixes, is filled with everything from dance-pop bangers to country-tinged ballads, and it found Twain teaming up with some unexpected songwriters and producers. The album includes collaborations with Tyler Joseph from Twenty-One Pilots and Adam Messinger, who is known for his work with the Canadian reggae band Magic! and pop sensation Justin Bieber.
“The album evolved stylistically and I was just doing everything that I loved,” Twain said of broadening her sound and approach. “I really loved Adam’s work with Magic! and I wanted to tap into his talents, so I called him and said, ‘You know, we’re probably an unlikely match, but can I send you some songs and you can play around with them?’ So I sent him ‘Queen of Me’ and “Pretty Liar’ and I loved what he did.”
“Tyler Joseph, I’m a big-time fan of his. I told him that I knew he didn’t normally produce other people’s work, but asked if I could send him a song, and if he liked it, if he’d consider it at some point,” she continued. “It took him a while to get around to being able to do it because he’s so busy with his own stuff, but he really loved ‘The Hardest Stone.’ He did that out of the love he had for the song and put his magic to it and I love what he did. All the collaborations were with artists that I am a personal fan of their work and I sent it to them without planning on how they would turn out or anything, it was just let’s go and create some music and see what happens.”
Though it didn’t make the album, Twain released a cover of Harry Styles’ “Falling” for her Spotify Sings session in March.
“I listen to Harry on my own free time because I’m a big fan of his,” she said of choosing the song to cover. “That was one of his songs that I’d put on repeat and I thought, ‘Wow, I’d actually like to sing this one.’ So when it came up to do some covers, that was a top choice.”
“I wasn’t expecting that reaction,” she said. “It was overwhelming and just very, very awesome.”
Fans got a sneak peek of the new record when Netflix dropped the “Shania Twain: Not Just a Girl” documentary on July 26 of last year. It’s a deep dive into Twain’s early life and her big break in music in the early ’90s; it highlights how she boldly blurred genre lines as her hits landed on the country and pop charts.
“It was a very authentic insight into my life as a music artist that I had fun revisiting myself,” she said. “I had a lot of laughs and it was just really fulfilling to go back and relive all of that life that I lived as a singer, starting from my childhood. Really, not that much has changed for me as an artist as far as the way I write, even stylistically and vocally, not a lot has changed. What changed was the evolution of the career. The documentary really brought me back and it was grounding, I would say, and I appreciated how it made me feel. I thought maybe it would make me feel a bit sad or lonely, but looking back on all of those ups and downs, it actually made me feel very triumphant and very reassured. So it was a good experience for me, a very positive one.”
Twain is a big fan of TikTok videos. She posts plenty of her own, but she’s really into all of the dancing videos and creative content, even when it involves fans using her music to create the clips. She’s also impressed by the dedication of the people that come out to the shows sporting homemade versions of some era of Twain’s fashion.
“That is so fun,” she said. “I’m telling you, the audience is my entertainment at every show. I’m not watching my own show, I’m watching them and it’s so entertaining. When people come dressed up — whether it’s the denim on denim or the ‘Man, I Feel Like a Woman’ outfit or whatever — it means something to me. It means that it matters to them and has made some sort of statement in their lives and I’ve successfully shared my work and my art with them. It’s the biggest compliment.”

Shania Twain Brought a Special and Heartfelt Performance to Denver
By Dom Vigil | Prelude Press | May 23, 2023
Famed country music royalty, Shania Twain electrified Ball Arena at her performance in Denver CO, on May 21st 2023. Starting off to no disappointment to the fans, she sang her first song, “Waking Up Dreaming”, fully immersed in the crowd. She was propelled through the front rows of the audience as enamored fans scrambled to take a picture with her in clear view. As she made her way on stage, she belted out several more popular tracks with an impressive rocket ship into space background that was nearly as massive as the arena itself.
The ecstatic audience, adorned with brightly lit cowboy hats and cell phones in hand, belted out nearly every word along side the famed Canadian superstar. As the impressive backdrop changed into a Saloon, complete with cows and even a little alien guy running around, Shania took moments throughout each of her songs to showcase her bandmates and duo of backup singers as each came forward to show off their skills.
This was definitely a performance geared towards the fans, and not to the extent of shouting “Hello Cleveland!”, or other small banter in between songs. The evening held numerous special surprises for a handful of fans, adorned with special VIP lanyards, as they were brought onto the actual stage to watch Shania perform a song in their midst. Afterwards she even took a quick a couple of minutes to personally take a photo with each of them. This was definitely more heartfelt than it was a distraction to the show itself. After a few more songs, she even read a Tweet from someone in attendance at the show, and found them in their seat. After some coaxing, “Patrick The Bartender” was brought on stage for a quick bout of rhetoric. He proclaimed his fandom, and requested to hear “Ka-Ching!”, which she proceeded to belt out a few impromptu verses a cappella to fulfill the excited young man’s request.
Shania ended her main set with the title track to her newest album Queen Of Me, which was released in February. It was accompanied with a video performance on the giant backdrop that featured all of the current tour musicians, which was a nice touch. After a short recess, she burst back on the stage to give the enamored fans what they had been patiently waiting for the entire evening. Closing the set with “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” the front row fans simultaneously erupted into an exuberant singalong, which seemed to be a perfect end to a magical evening.

Saw this thread on Reddit. It's mostly people who attended one of the shows sharing what they think. Mixed reviews. Some very good, some mediocre, a few bad.
In this article the drummer is called trashy. How do we feel about that?
In all honestly I do feel like the quality of the drum sound/volume/power is far less than with her previous drummers (especially compared to her last one Elijah Wood).
To me the new drummer seems to lack power and energy and when she hits the drums it sounds almost like a childrens drum kit.
I.e. the intro to 'Honey I'm Home' now sounds so empty compared to Elijah Woods drum work. No punch. No extra beat/layers. Very basic drum work.
Not to mention her far from perfect outro's. She doesn't know how to end a song in a 'Shania way'. Comes across very unprofessional and Shania unworthy to be honest.
At first I was like: might be because it's the beginning of the tour and it will get better. But so far it hasn't...
Looks like Shania taped something for "Access Hollywood".

From “The Woman in Me” (1st country album I fell in love with) to “The Queen of Me”— Shania Twain is forever an icon. So much fun at this shoot over the holiday weekend! 🎶 🤠🎸💃🏻🌟👑

Here is the "Access Hollywood" segment. I looked at today's episode description and there's no mention of Shania. But it still could be on today's show.
Tom Hanks is more than happy to be a third wheel, invite or not! The Oscar winner crashed Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's date night at Shania Twain's Hollywood Bowl concert over the Memorial Day holiday with an expert-level photobomb in a cute couple's selfie. Kristen clearly had a sense of humor about the unexpected cameo, joking on Instagram that Tom and his wife Rita Wilson were "some really nice randos" to share the evening with. The A-list run-in was just a bonus for what appeared to be a very special night for Shania superfan Dax, who Kristen said was already "crying by the first song" of the country queen's set.
I am seeing more and more people posting things about the tour and a good portion of them say that Shania comes across as drunk or on pills or something of that nature. So singing and looks aside, I hope she is doing okay.

To be honest, the tour is way too long/much for her to handle. She is already just "going through the motions". God knows why she added a Fall leg after the UK. Many of those cities will be her second or third stop. It's going to be a long rest of the year.

She wasn't even like this during the "Let's Go!" residency so something has to have happened in the past year because she just seems so lost half the time. Something is definitely going on.
Shania Twain Receives Criticism for Her “Queen of Me” Concerts
Saving Country Music | May 31, 2023
It’s patently clear at this point that Shania Twain is living in at least partial denial of the reality of things. She is an aging performer attempting to cling to her mainstream relevancy as opposed to embracing the natural rhythms of popular music to transition from a current popular star to one of legendary status. Shania appears to believe that as long as she glams up her image, drops F-bombs in her bad songs, and continues to act like she’s 26, she can still set the world on fire. Unfortunately for her, she is wrong, at least in the eyes of many of her own fans.
The former country superstar turned pop diva put her misconceptions on display in her last two rather terrible studio albums Now (2017) and Queen of Me (2023). As the press dutifully showered her with plaudits for her girl boss energy and empowering messages, the albums and singles flopped after initial bursts of interest due to her name recognition and long absence. And since the press and critics failed to question her current direction, it should be no surprise that this same failed approach is translating to Shania Twain’s live performances as part of her current “Queen of Me” tour.
Of course, not everyone’s take on Shania Twain’s current direction is bad. Since she has always appealed in part to a decidedly passive population of music fans, as long as the hits are performed, and there’s pretty costumes and flashing lights, these fans put their hands up in the air and wave them like they just don’t care when prompted to, and go home feeling sated to see one of their favorite superstars.
But for fans that have a clue—and are hard to fool with poorly lip-synced performances and awkwardly forced choreography—they’re not buying Shania Twain and her ridiculous blonde wig. Even worse for Shania and her team, they’re speaking out, including in moments that are going viral on social media.
Recently, Whiskey Riff ran down numerous Tik-Tok videos of Shania Twain concert goers leaving in the middle of performances in large numbers. You sift through the comments of some of these posts, and some say they’re misleading and hyperbolic, while others concur that the shows are not good, and they witnessed or were part of the early show exodus. Either way, when there are numerous posts from people saying the same things, it’s not a good sign.
What are some of the complaints? That Shania Twain is coming across as awkward or even drunk, that her singing is off, while in other moments she’s also clearly lip-syncing certain songs. But overall, the presentation just doesn’t seem to be from the Shania Twain that fans thought they knew.
Granted, sifting through the comments of concert posts and reviews, there is a significant gulf between people who seem to love what is going on, and those who hate it, almost like the same fans watched two completely different shows. One possible reason for this could be that Shania Twain’s country fans are not into all of the pop pageantry of her current tour, and are not used to seeing performers lip syncing. Meanwhile, pop fans don’t see anything out of place on Shania’s current tour, because it’s par for the course.
If people are enjoying Shania Twain’s concerts, that’s all that should matter. This is the first rule of artistic criticism. Whether fellow fans and professional reviewers feel similar is superfluous.
Most professional critics and reviewers are more than happy to contort themselves in all kinds of awkward positions to paint a rosy picture for Shania, and they’ve remained mostly positive. After all, if you trash her performances, you’re likely to get trashed yourself online by her loyal fans, or to lose access to other entertainers when they roll through your town. And since Shania Twain has attained diva status, it’s considered verboten in many circles to criticize her at all. But one brave professional reviewer in St. Paul Minnesota was unafraid to tell it like he saw it.
“For much of the show, Twain seemed distracted and distanced from the near-capacity St. Paul hockey arena,” says Ross Raihala writing for the Pioneer Press. “She gave the performance of someone who has spent more than a year on the road and is really ready to wrap things up and go home. Problem is, this was the 12th night of the tour. Clad in oversized sunglasses and the cheapest long blond wig you’ve ever seen, she was totally unrecognizable as she barked her way through the verses. During the choruses, meanwhile, it sounded like there was some heavy electronic voice assistance going on.”
The review goes on to say,
The largely female crowd was ready to party and cheered Twain on as she made her way through old hits like “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You),” “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!” and “Up!” But whenever she played any of her recent material, the enthusiasm plummeted, whether it was the swampy electro-blues of “Roll Me on the River” or the synth pop of “Pretty Liar” (which prominently incorporates an expletive in the chorus that sounds painfully forced rather than edgy).
Throughout, it was tough to pin down exactly what was going on with her voice. At times, she appeared to be lip syncing and at other times, she struggled to hit certain notes. It’s clear Lyme and COVID did a number on Twain’s range, but maybe she thought she could push her way through it?
At one point, while she was introducing the new track “Inhale/Exhale Air,” Twain told the crowd, in the flattest, least convincing manner possible: “I am having the time of my life right now. I really am.” I truly hope, for her sake, that she didn’t actually believe what she was saying.
None of this is to be callous or uncaring toward Shania Twain, including her vocal issues that seem to have both affected her capabilities, and her confidence to where she feels the need to make up for her voice with electronic enhancement that arguably makes the situation even worse.
But when people think about Shania Twain, they think about a 90s pop country star with monster hits that currently rest in the 25-year nostalgia window. It’s not just the strange wig and stage presentation, or even the new songs specifically. It’s that Shania seems to be trying to make up for her age and shortcomings as opposed to embracing them. Being “empowering” isn’t about attempting to defy your age or status, but accepting who you are and being authentic to yourself, warts and all.
Shania Twain could be riding the resurgent wave of interest in 90s country that has repatriated so many artists back into the mainstream narrative that were put out to pasture ten years ago, including with new music that is emblematic of her country pop comfort zone and sweet spot. But instead she’s trying to be something that she’s not. And though she may fool some or even many, she’s not fooling them all, especially the country fans. But the worst part may be that Shania Twain is trying to fool herself, and it’s sad for many of her long time fans to witness.
I think we have nothing to worry about ie alcohol or pills. It just doesn’t fit with the person she is. Ludicrous people entertain this thought on the socials.
I think that the honest truth is that she finally sings live on some songs to which she mimed for years and after a few open throat surgeries she sounds completely different (yet besutiful). Plus new backing tracks have her voice singing a harmony during the choruses which just sounds unnatural and odd. I think that is something they should fix whilst being on tour. The (pre-)choruses of IGGG and MIFLAW are the main examples of what I mean. I don’t pay big bucks to get a vocal lesson from the new backing vocal. I want to hear Shania wether its live or pre-recorded ❤️
Most reviews are extremely positive, At 60 she's making good money and the concerts are selling out. What you all expect from her a live performance throughout the entire concert? It certainly has improved a lot more since when she first started. Roll me on a River and Pretty liar should be replaced and You win my love added. She's got to stop with the blonde wigs they look like they are from a dollar store and stick with the brown. Body wise she looks amazing however she never really promoted any of the single off the queen of me. The duet with Anne Marie is doing well in the UK it is to bad she didn't do a music video with her and promote it with her. I agree with Tommy the tour might be too long and hopefully it doesn't affect her health. She definitely ain't on drugs or drinking that is absolutely ridiculous. Leave her alone and let her be. She made a great album unfortunately her new record label and Shania herself didn't put much effort in promotion. Also I believe she should have made a more country album however I love the album
Just had to share some of these photos from our Phoenix show because I love how this red dress looked on stage!! We had such a beautiful night in Arizona and I can’t want to come back ❤️ #QueenOfMeTour
Hailey Whitters wrapped up her set of concerts. Now Breland makes his debut tomorrow night as Shania's opening act in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I'm sure he will join her onstage for "Inhale/Exhale AIR".
Palm Springs!! You were so so sooo loud. What an amazing crowd!! How great is this dress?? We named it Chocolate Swirl 🍫❤️ Tulsa you’re up next tonight!! Let’s party 🤠
Do we know if Breland joined Shania on stage to sing "Air"?
He did join her onstage for an impromptu "Oklahoma" song and "You're Still The One" so I would assume he sang "Inhale/Exhale AIR" too. Haven't seen a video yet.

So Shania didn't even sing "Inhale/Exhale AIR" last night. That's strange! Especially since Breland is the opening act now. I wonder if it's cut from the setlist now like "Last Day Of Summer".

I know most people are there for her big hits but I find it odd that she keeps removing songs from the 'Queen of Me' album especially considering that's what the tour is named after.

EXACTLY! Especially considering how much she talked about how excited she was to perform the new songs leading up to the tour.

Let her exchange songs, why not, but not delete any. So for the next concerts there will be less and less songs...? What a pity for AIR...: incomprehensible when she is with Breland. Last Day Of Summer isn't festive enough to go on the tour. She could add Best Friend or Not Just A Girl.
Oklahoma, I love you. The Tulsa show felt like friends hanging out on a Saturday night ❤️ We even wrote a song together and my friend @breland joined me on stage to harmonize!! #QueenOfMeTour
