Shania Twain tells Chris Evans about her new album and tour: 'I'm so glad to be back'

The best-selling female artist in country music history joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch to talk about her new record, her tour, her songwriting style, and about what went down at the Grammys at the weekend.

Speaking about her new album - which is her sixth full-length offering and her first record since 2017 - she told Chris: “This has ended up being my happy album, because Covid was weighing me down, like all of us. Big, dark, heavy cloud. And so, every time I would go into to write, I found myself using it to turn my mood around, to make myself happy. I'm like, ‘Oh, I just want to smile today’. I just want to laugh today. I just want to write something that makes me want to dance’. So the album ended up being just a very cheerful pick-me-up.”

She continued: “The album has to flow as a full body of work, so whatever song doesn't fit in that listening experience… doesn't go on the album. 

“This particular album, I wanted to have enough variety on it, because I'm experimenting with different producers. So there's a few songs that have that real country stomp to them, and then there's others that are more storytelling folk songs. There's others that are more dance songs.”

Shania’s Queen of Me global tour kicks off in the US in April, before heading to Europe for a series of dates, including some in the UK and Ireland this September. She told Chris: “I only get up on stage to enjoy the response of the audience. To engage. And they give everything they have, you know? They're singing along, and I was really anxious for this new album to come out as soon as possible before the tour, so that they could learn the lyrics!

“Because I'm like, ‘I need them singing along with me’. It's the interaction that I do this for, after all. It's like a joint effort. We party together.”

Speaking more about the tour, she explained: “The timing is so good, because when I get into the shows on the tour is when I'm really going to know what this stuff means to them. You know, like, especially a song like Giddy Up, that is really all about getting that spice back in your life and that pep in your step.”

And if you are heading to more than one of Shania’s gigs in the UK, you might hear different songs on different nights. “I'm actually going to be rehearsing a lot more songs that we will use in every show, because I'm going to switch some things out,” she said. “So, if you're there three nights, you're gonna get a song from maybe The Woman In Me that I haven't done in a while. I'm going to mix them up a little bit. And the same thing goes with the new stuff. We are going to have reserved songs ready to go, that are off the grid that we just do.”

Talking about how her songwriting spans genres, the musician - who wrote her first song when she was ten - told Chris: “I was always a hybrid artist, and that's why the country always had that different edge to it. 

“It's just a little bit of everything. It's whatever I was influenced by.”

She continued: “When you take a country song, that might be a waltz, and then you change the time signature, but you have the same grassroots storytelling, you start to get into something really interesting. You start mixing instruments up, you start playing the banjo like an electric guitar. There's no limits. The genres really don't dictate what we do creatively.

“I don't think I ever knew what my lane was, which is good. It made for a difficult start, because it was not clear always to the industry where it was supposed to be, but the fans make up their own minds.”

Despite having a busy year of touring ahead of her, Shania said: “I can't wait to get back in the studio. I’ve got so much more recording to do.”

Shania is a five-time Grammy Award-winner, and was at this year’s event last weekend. “I was so cheering on Harry, because he's such a sweet person,” she said.

“Adele was behind me having the greatest time ever. She's so fun.

“I think I was blocking her view, part of the time. So I kept saying, ‘Am I blocking your view? Do I need to move?’ It was great fun.”

The country star will also be at the BRITs this Saturday night. “You've got to see what I wear on the red carpet. That might be the most interesting part,” she teased. “It's colourful.”

Shania concluded her conversation with Chris by telling listeners: “I just want to say that I'm so glad to be back. I'm feeling great.”

Country star Shania Twain is one of a solid roster of guests on The Graham Norton Show tonight, which also features Hollywood actress Salma Hayek Pinault, Oscar-winner Julianne Moore, Grammy-winning pop star Lizzo, dancer Johannes Radebe and singer Tom Grennan.

On Friday's show, Canadian singer Twain will chat about her new upbeat album Queen of Me, as well as the "miracle" throat surgery she says she is "so grateful" for.

The Grammy-winning artist has undergone several throat surgeries since contracting Lyme disease in 2003 while horseback riding, causing nerve damage.

Most recently in 2018, Twain had Gore-Tex stabilizers surgically implanted in her throat to take some of the pressure off her vocal muscles while singing.

The multi-million selling star has previously opened up about how the throat surgeries have shifted the sound of her singing voice.

"It's easier for me to make loud sounds than it is to make soft sounds," she revealed recently to InStyle magazine.

"When the air is dry, it's harder to get that resonance. When I'm loud, it happens, which was the opposite problem before I got the surgery," Twain added.

Speaking about her most recent throat surgery on The Graham Norton show, airing this Friday, the singer said: “The operation was very invasive, and I’ve got a big scar that I am proud of.

"I’m very happy to have a scar rather than no voice. The surgery was a miracle, and I am so grateful. 

"Going back into a studio after the operation was a discovery and I was re-learning voice. I can get very loud and now I can swear really loudly!”

The 57-year-old music superstar also chatted to Norton about her new album Queen of Me, released last week.

"This is my happy album," she explained.

"I often go to my song writing to write myself into the future.

"These are songs that make me smile and laugh and want to dance and projected myself to where there is sunlight at end of the tunnel. I ended up making a very happy, inspired, and celebratory album.”

Shania Twain praised the Grammys when she joined Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott on Magic Radio Breakfast this morning.

The Canadian singer-songwriter was on the show to talk about her brand-new album ‘Queen Of Me’ as well as the upcoming BRIT Awards.

Having attended the Grammy Awards only a few nights ago, Shania was quick to praise the event commenting: “It was one of the best Grammys I have ever attended. Just the way all the artists were seated very close to each other, we were hugging and chatting and exchanging and catching up. It was great.”

She also revealed that she caught up with Beyoncé at the event. Harriet then asked Shania, who is known for her love of horses, if Beyoncé had asked for her permission for the Renaissance artwork.

“I was thinking this through the whole thing,” the singer joked. “Listen I don’t own the art direction of you know having horses in the imagery … she didn’t ask my permission, but she was very gracious and sweet.

“From a distance she was just waving at me. We were like about four tables apart and in the breaks, she would wave at me and give me these little gestures, so I just went over and just gave her a hug and congratulated her. It was a big night for her.”

As far as the BRITs are concerned, Shania was quick to quash any thoughts that there might be a surprise performance from her when they take place on Saturday.

“No, I am just attending, and I’ll be brightly coloured. I’ll be colourful on the red carpet,” she said.

The subject of Shania’s friendship with Grammy Award winner Harry Styles also came up in the conversation: “We don’t talk about fashion. We have never spoken about fashion actually,” she revealed. “We just have you know very ‘how is your mum’, more like personal things. You know congrats on the movie, congrats on the record. Just sweet stuff like that.”

Shania Twain: “I’m probably most proud of not giving up on my voice”

Shania Twain needs no introduction. With 1997 third album ‘Come On Over’ – still the best-selling album by a female solo artist ever – she became a global superstar and the undisputed queen of country-pop. By blurring the lines between country and pop, Twain set a template for genre-straddling Nashville musicians who followed her. In 2021, Taylor Swift thanked Twain on TikTok for making her own crossover success possible by obliterating the misconception that “country girls can’t go pop”.

Twain’s conversational, super-hooky songwriting continues to inspire everyone from Harry Styles, who welcomed her onstage when he headlined Coachella, to Rina Sawayama, who quoted her iconic “let’s go girls!” on last year’s twangy banger ‘This Hell’. Twain will forever be associated with her 1995-2002 imperial phase, when she had three consecutive albums certified diamond in the US for sales of 10 million. But at the same time, she is no nostalgia act. Featuring songs co-written with Georgia and Twenty One Pilots’ Tyler Joseph, her new album ‘Queen Of Me’ is an uplifting blast that recently entered the UK charts at Number One.

Twain says its irresistible lead single ‘Giddy Up!’ is a “great example of how I was cheering myself up during the pandemic through songwriting”. When she meets NME in a beyond plush London hotel room, the Canadian exudes pop star glamour – she is even wearing her signature leopard print. But Twain is also warm, down-to-earth and willing to talk about her career’s mettle-testing troughs as well as its stratospheric peaks.

“I’m probably most proud of not giving up on my voice,” Twain reflects, referring to the intense vocal rehabilitation she completed after Lyme disease severely weakened her vocal cords in the mid-noughties. “It was seven years of not knowing what was wrong [with my voice] and then not quitting.” Today, she likens the journey to being able to “power-sing” again to “climbing to the top of a mountain”.

During a trip to the UK in album release week, Twain joined NME for a wide-ranging In Conversation interview in which she discusses her new album, working with Georgia and ambition to play Glastonbury. Here’s what we learned.

She told her collaborators not to try to make a Shania Twain record

Twain wrote her last album, 2017’s relatively downbeat ‘Now’, without a single co-writer; but after the pandemic, she was “really open to getting [in the studio] with other creatives”, so she teamed up with contemporary producers including Mark Ralph (Years & Years) and David Stewart (BTS, Jonas Brothers). The aim was to make what she now describes as “my happy album”.

Before each session, Twain would give her co-writers a slightly surprising “directive”: “Don’t think typical Shania because I’ll do the Shania part. If I bring the Shania and you bring your thing, together I’m sure we’ll make something really fun.” 

“And that’s exactly what happened,” Twain adds with a smile. She was especially impressed with British synth-pop musician Georgia, who co-wrote and played on ‘Got It Good’, a breezy bop produced by Ralph. “She’s very talented,” Twain says of the British musician. “She went on the real kits [and] did the live drums. And then she got on the LinnDrum [drum machine], which was just so fun. We’ve got footage of that, actually. It was clear that we were all so happy to be in a room with other creatives. 

She can remember when she was first called “iconic”

It was when 2002’s ‘Up!’ made her the first – and to date only – female solo artist to have three consecutive albums certified diamond in the US. “That was when [the icon thing] began,” she recalls, “because that was an iconic thing”. It put Twain in a “very elite category” of artists, but only now can she fully appreciate the scale of her success. “I think as I was achieving things, I was too busy to celebrate them in the moment,” she says. “You know, I guess I’m such a committed professional that it’s almost like I just put the blinders on and work.”

Twain is equally humble about “let’s go girls!”, her iconic opening line from ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman’. “People have been saying, ‘let’s go girls!’ forever. It’s not like I invented that phrase,” she says. “[But] the fact that I put it in a song that became so big, I guess it just resurfaced in pop culture as a catchphrase.” Still, Twain knows full well that it’s very much become her catchphrase. “It’s like the leopard print – certain things just become part of your part of your recognition and [how] people identify with you, I guess,” she says.

She’s always been in her own lane

When Twain arrived in Nashville in the early ’90s, she upset some country purists who considered her “too pop”. Others deemed her “too provocative” because she dared to show her navel in music videos – an attitude that now seems overwhelmingly sexist. “Those that thought I was going to ruin the genre probably still think I ruined the genre,” Twain says with a laugh. “I’m not sure I changed any minds. I was just always in my own lane.” 

Twain says she “didn’t realise you weren’t allowed your own lane” at the time because she had always looked up to Dolly Parton, a woman who definitely did things her way. She was also influenced by the genre’s iconic rebels Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. “I mean, those guys had [literally] gotten arrested. So I was a bit naive about where country had gotten to,” she recalls. “And that’s what I walked into without realising it. So maybe I did ruin something for some people; but I’m unapologetic about it.”

She attributes her resilience to starting her career as a bar singer – aged eight

Twain cut her teeth singing in the “rough local bars” of Timmins, Ontario, the small industrial city where she grew up. “When I was a kid, I really had a 100-song repertoire,” she recalls. “I wanted to be able to take requests because the bars are very much like that. You know, [the punters are] drunk and they go: ‘Play ‘Country Roads’ or whatever.'”

Because she was a minor, Twain wasn’t allowed into these bars until after last orders at midnight. She would then sing for around an hour until the lights went on at closing time. “I’m telling you, man, you don’t want to see some of those bars with the lights on,” she says. “That’s when you’d see the guy that’s been passed out for two hours, and often that’s when the fist fights would start.”

Looking back now, Twain appreciates that this “scary” environment was “not appropriate for an eight-year-old”, but believes it taught her a valuable lesson. “I learned to not look down and not look back – just keep going and look for the nearest door,” she says. “I think I’ve kept that with me all these years. If you find yourself in a vulnerable situation, just keep going. You gotta walk around the broken glass and the fist fights and find that door.”

She definitely wants to play Glastonbury’s legends slot

Twain would follow in the footsteps of two of her heroes – Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson – by taking to the Pyramid Stage on Sunday afternoon. “It’s on my wish list – absolutely. So I’ll make sure I do that,” she says with some determination.

But for now, Twain is focusing on her ‘Queen Of Me Tour’, which kicks off in North America in April before arriving in the UK in September, with plans to shuffle the setlist and rotate songs each night, including a mix of new tracks and the classics.

And those classics are bound to sound especially jubilant because Twain believes her rehabilitated voice is stronger than when she last toured in 2018. “It’s all about celebrating that I can belt and power-sing again,” she says. “And that the mutual respect [with my audience] is still there. You know, when I go on tour, people show up. That’s a pleasure. That’s a joy.”
