Shania Twain to perform at 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix race-day concert series

The Canadian country-pop star will perform hits from her three-decade career

Canadian singer Shania Twain will perform at the 2023 Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix.

The country-pop star will play on the penultimate night of the concert series at Etihad Park on November 25.

She joins a growing line up of artists already announced, including Dutch DJ Tiesto and US singer Ava Max on November 23 and the big race-day concert by rock group, the Foo Fighters, on November 26.

The artist performing on November 24 will be revealed soon. Access to all concerts is exclusive for Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix ticket holders.

Twain’s addition is a coup for the Abu Dhabi race as it marks her debut performance in the region.

She will step on stage with a bevy of hits taken from a three-decade career that saw her sell more than 100 million albums – 30 million of which came from the trio of records: 1995's The Woman in Me, 1997’s Come On Over and Up, released in 2002.

Co-produced by former husband Robert John “Mutt” Lange, a staggering 28 singles were released from all three albums combined with many becoming global hits including You’re Still the One, That Don’t Impress Me Much and Man! I Feel Like a Woman.

Twain also comes to the UAE on the back of new release Queen of Me.

Released in February and preceded by singles Waking Up Dreaming and Giddy Up!, the album work continues Twain's approach of burnishing her melodic country songs with ebullient pop hooks.

As well topping the UK, Australian and Canadian charts, Queen of Me resulted in a well-received world tour that will end in Abu Dhabi.

“We are delighted to announce the latest act to headline at this year’s Yasalam After-Race Concerts and welcome global music superstar Shania Twain to Abu Dhabi,” said Said Al Noaimi, chief executive of concert organisers Ethara.

“She is an internationally renowned trailblazer and continues to push the boundaries throughout an incredible 30-year, award-winning career to date.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates which borders Saudi Arabia. Shania is the headliner on Saturday, November 25. It's a 4-day concert series, Nov. 23-26.

Shania Twain delivers a timeless set at Abu Dhabi F1 concert

Canadian country-pop star has the crowd singing along in her debut regional performance

Shania Twain turned back the years with a hit-filled set at Etihad Park.

Performing as part of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix concert series, the Canadian singer reminded audiences why she dominated the 1990s pop landscape and had the crowd singing along.

But she also showed there is plenty left in the creative tank with a splash of new material from her album Queen of Me, which was released in February.

Twain arrived on stage with her five-piece band and opened the show with the album's lead single, Waking Up Dreaming, a gleaming synth-pop track.

Her warm and husky tone, flecked by that winning twang, was in fine form.

Next up was Up, one of Twain's many self-empowerment anthems with its stomping fusion of country and pop music.

Then came the first of several Twain hits, Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You).

The vibrancy of the live version is in contrast to the 1997 dated recording, particularly with the driving electric guitar and pristine backing vocals. 

After that came the delightful one-two nostalgic punch of Come on Over and You're Still the One.

Both are timeless distillations of Twain's style, which blends her warm, honeyed vocals with lilting country melodies and Celtic-inspired strings.

You're Still the One remains particularly gorgeous with the crowd singing the backing vocals perfectly.

It may have taken Twain three decades to make a live Middle East debut, but for fans hearing these timeless songs live was surely worth the wait.

The F1 after-race concert line-up continues with Sunday’s race day concert with the Foo Fighters.

FTMO also sounds 100% live.

On the tour she did alot of moving around the stage. At this performance she just had a mic stand and stayed in one place. I wonder if she sounds better because she is able to focus on singing rather than worrying about choreography at the same time.

How can you tell it's live? It's hard for me to tell. She's been using the same background track since her first Vegas show lol

There are some imperfections in her vocal... timing is slightly off, she misses a few words and the background singers sing instead etc. Her voice also doesn't have the robotic autotune effect that the backing track has.

The track she had been using for IGGG was new with the QoM tour. It's in a lower key than the previous track and it also had her singing a harmony instead of the melody. In this performance in the UAE she mostly sang the melody.

It's great to hear her sing IGGG live again! So much better than the track she used.

Still sad, sad, sad that she sounds way worse singing IGGG live than she did during her 1st Vegas residency and during the Rock This Country Tour. 

If I were her I would get a refund on that open thoat surgery after which she said: "my voice sounds better than ever"...

I've mentioned it before but it's so shocking to me the difference in her voice between the first residency and even the 'Now' album. Both of them were after the Lyme Disease so I am not sure why they sound so drastically different.

I agree. It really is shocking. Endless Love which was recorded and released just prior to the residency sounds like her old voice. Her voice during the first residency sounded like her old voice, just a little strained and more mature. Her voice during Rock this Country still sounds kind of like her old voice, but she lost a lot of control and power that she had during the residency. Based on what I've seen online, and anceotal evidence I think she probably had surgery in early to mid 2016 (prior to NOW being recorded) and mid 2018 (a few weeks prior to the start of the NOW tour). I wouldn't be shocked at all if she had anotther one in winter 2015 between the residency and Rock this County tour and in late 2021 or early 2022 (prior to QoM being recorded).

I also think her sound and audio technicians were better back then. Everything is very well blended and when they turn up the playback track, it's pretty seamless and unless you are listening for it you wouldn't know (I'm pretty sure the pre-chorus in the 2014 and 2015 videos is playback "Don't try to run. Love can be fun..") Now when she is using a track it's super obvious and often cringe.
