Episode 270: Shania Twain

“You’re Still The One”

Shania Twain is a singer and songwriter from Ontario, Canada. She’s the only female artist to have had three consecutive Diamond albums  —  albums that have each sold over ten million copies. Actually, her 1997 album Come On Over is the best-selling album by a female solo artist of all time. One of the most iconic songs from that iconic album is “You’re Still The One.” It was co-written and produced by Mutt Lange, who had previously produced some other classic albums, like AC/DC’s Back in Black and Def Leppard’s Pyromania. He had also produced Shania Twain’s previous album, The Woman in Me. For this episode, Shania told me the story of writing “You’re Still The One.” She told me about what the song meant to her when she was making it, over 25 years ago, and what it means to her now.

Shania Twain @ShaniaTwain

You're Still The One is still the song I love (HA), but for completely different reasons now to when I first wrote it. The lovely @HrishiHirway had me on @SongExploder to go deep about the writing and recording process, and how the song meaning has evolved over the years 😌 https://songexploder.net/shania-twain

Shania Twain Admits the Spoken Intro of "You're Still the One" Is "So Corny"

"I never enjoyed that part"

By Alex Hudson | Exclaim! | April 4, 2024

"You're Still the One" is one of Shania Twain's biggest hits — a multiple-platinum-selling single that, as of this writing, is only slightly behind "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" as her most-streamed song. Despite the its popularity, however, Twain acknowledges that she doesn't like the track's spoken-word intro, which she finds "so corny."

Appearing on this week's episode of the podcast Song Exploder, she recalled working on the song with producer (and then-husband) Mutt Lange.

"Mutt wanted to add the sensuality to the intro of the song," Twain said. "He wanted to milk the romance. And I never enjoyed that part. I'm like, 'Agh, this is so corny.'"

When podcast host Hrishikesh Hirway suggested listening to it, Twain cackled and exclaimed, "See, it makes laugh even thinking about listening to it!"

She recalled of her time in the vocal booth, "I'm in there and I'm just giving him a bunch of different takes. I would have liked to listen to the outtakes, because I'm sure I was laughing between some of them, thinking, 'Oh my god, I'm really pouring it on here.'"

Despite the intro's undeniable cringe factor, the uncomfortableness of its intimacy is undeniably one of the song's strengths. Hear Twain discuss "You're Still the One" on Song Exploder below.
