All aboard for Glastonbury - GWR unveil Shania TRAIN following prompt from broadcaster Nick Grimshaw
By Claudia Zunn | MNR Journal - UK | June 17, 2024
Country-pop singer, songwriter and occasional TV star Shania Twain can add another accolade to her list of achievements today (Monday 17th June), as Great Western Railway reveals a train headed to Glastonbury festival has been named after the star.
With help from broadcaster Nick Grimshaw, Great Western Railway unveiled the aptly-named ‘Shania Train’ decal - complete with a pink cowboy hat and leopard print train fit for the country pop star’s aesthetic - on the side of the Intercity Express Train 802109 at London Paddington.
The tribute came following a conversation between Nick ‘Grimmy’ Grimshaw and Shania Twain on the BBC Sounds podcast Sidetracked with Annie and Nick, where it was revealed that a ‘Shainia Train’ already exists in Switzerland. Grimmy suggested a UK equivalent ahead of the legendary musician’s Sunday afternoon appearance at this year’s Glastonbury festival, which GWR soon picked up on on social media.

Nick Grimshaw unveils train named after Country Music Queen Shania Twain
Great Western Railway - June 17, 2024
Broadcaster Nick Grimshaw today unveiled the ‘Shania Train’ – named in tribute to the Queen of Country Pop, Shania Twain – ahead of her summer appearances across the Great Western Railway network.
Shania will be appearing at Glastonbury, Chepstow Racecourse and BST Hyde Park in the coming weeks, and a very much impressed Grimmy was at London Paddington to reveal a resplendent GWR train vinyl complete with pink leopard print – befitting of the legendary Canadian singer.
It comes after Grimmy got chatting to Shania on the BBC Sounds podcast Sidetracked with Annie and Nick. The episode previewed her Sunday teatime ‘Legend slot’ at Glastonbury Festival and is part of the BBC’s coverage of Glastonbury on TV, BBC iPlayer, radio and BBC Sounds.
In it, Shania spoke of her delight at having a train in Switzerland named ‘Shania Train’. Grimmy responded by suggesting that, as You’re still the one, there should be a UK equivalent which runs to Castle Cary during the festival.
Picking up the conversation on social media, GWR was quick to respond and design a Shania Train vinyl worthy of the singer-songwriter, famous for hits including Man! I Feel Like A Woman; That Don’t Impress Me Much; and If You’re Not in It for Love (I’m Outta Here).
Surprised customers watched on today as Grimmy carefully peeled back protective sheeting to reveal ‘Shania Train’ on the side of Intercity Express Train 802109.
Grimmy said:
“It is actually on. The Shania Train is going to exist in the UK. I cannot believe that my brain has created an actual train. You could be going to Glastonbury riding the Shania Train. So giddy up, let’s go girls.”
GWR Sales & Marketing Director Amanda Burns said:
“As soon as we heard about ‘Shania Train’ it impressed us very much! Shania Twain is a country music icon and this is a great way to celebrate her forthcoming appearances at Glastonbury, Chepstow Racecourse and BST Hyde Park.
“It has been brilliant to work with the team at Sidetracked and help bring this gem of an idea to reality. We’ll be carrying thousands of music goers this year and we hope ‘Shania Train’ turns a few heads as fans flock to what promises to be another unforgettable summer.”
“Hello GWR staff and customers! Welcome aboard the #ShaniaTrain to Glastonbury. This is SHANIA TWAIN! But don’t worry, I’m not the train driver…I’m just here to wish everybody a great weekend. LET’S GO GIRLS”
