Newfoundland crooner wins Canada’s Got Talent in Niagara Falls
Singer Jacob Lewis wins Canada’s Got Talent Season 4 from Niagara Falls

Newfoundland singer Jacob Lewis left Niagara Falls a millionaire Tuesday night.
After two golden buzzers earned him a trip to the season finale of “Canada’s Got Talent,” the Butlerville crooner rode an emotional wave to win the show’s grand prize of $1 million.
Lewis was a favourite of judge Shania Twain all season, and her hunch was right – viewers across Canada gave him the nod over seven other finalists for the Season 4 finale at the OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino.
Lewis performed a cover of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” during the finale. It had judges Twain, Howie Mandel, Katherine Ryan and Kardinal Offishall cheering as much as the audience.
“That voice is smoother than a Zamboni across Howie’s head,” cracked Ryan.
Lewis is the third singer to win the competition since it returned to Citytv after a decade-long hiatus. Among the Final Four, he beat out New Brunswick country singers The Martin Boys, Vaughan singer Nicolina and Toronto dance troupe Funkyverse.
Before his performance, a filmed segment revealed Lewis put his dream of singing on hold five years ago when his twin boys were born premature.
The two-hour show started filming at a mostly full OLG Stage in late afternoon – only the final 15 minutes, when the winner is revealed by host Lindsay Ell, airs live.
In-between acts, audience ‘hype man’ Kyle Miller kept the crowd pumped.
“We have to get our energy through the camera to the people at home.”
It was a year of change for the show, with original hosts Trish Stratus and Lilly Singh replaced by Twain and comedian Ryan.
Twain, the best-selling female country singer in history, gave the show bigger star power for its fourth season and fans constantly shouted out for her attention Tuesday.
But it was Ryan who had the best lines of the night.
Summing up the finalists, she said, “Each of these acts is like Canadian milk – it’s in the bag.”
Offbeat Markham comedian Sai Kit Lo got this response from her: “You’re going to be on Netflix – will it be a comedy special, true crime documentary, we don’t know.”
She even invited the finale’s other comedian, Darren Leo, to open for her for a show in Toronto Saturday.
“Canada’s Got Talent” has consistently been one of Citytv’s biggest hits since it returned and has found a seemingly permanent home in Niagara Falls. The first season back from hiatus was filmed at Fallsview Casino’s 1,500-seat Avalon Theatre before switching to the 5,000-seat OLG Stage for Seasons 3, 4 and 5.
For the second straight season, Rogers provided the show’s $1 million prize (with an extra $50 from Mandel). CIBC awarded the season’s eight Golden Buzzer winners $25,000 each.
Episodes were filmed in October and began airing in March.
