Winner of Late Late Opening Act will support Shania Twain in Limerick
RTE | April 10, 2026
The winner of the upcoming Late Late Show search for Ireland's newest country music star will win the chance to be the support act for Shania Twain at her Thomond Park Stadium gig Limerick this July.
Five acts for the Late Late Show Opening Act competition are set to be announced from Monday and will compete to become the first winner of new contest, which airs on Friday 17 April on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
The finalists will perform their favourite country song in front of a studio audience and a judging panel, including Una Healy, and the overall winner will be decided by media and industry juries as well as a public vote.
In a video message aired on tonight's Late Late Show, Shania Twain announced the competition prize, saying, "I’ll be back performing my headline show in Ireland this summer. I’m so excited to announce that the winner of The Late Late Show Opening Act will be my opening act for my only Irish date in Limerick on July 7."
Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty said, "Shania Twain is a true country icon and we’re so excited she’s agreed to give our winner the chance to be her opening act in Thomond Park.
"For any country fan, Shania’s gig this summer will be an absolute highlight and for our winner to walk out on stage and perform will be a proper pinch me moment."
As well as sharing the stage with Twain, the Opening Act winner will also appear on the annual Late Late Show Country Special later this year.
The five finalists will be announced on Today with David McCullagh on RTÉ Radio1 and on RTÉ social accounts from Monday, 13 April.
Shania Twain, whose hits include Any Man of Mine, That Don’t Impress Me Much, You’re Still the One, and Man! I Feel Like A Woman!, will play Thomond Park Stadium, Limerick on 7 July.

The Late Late Show will crown its inaugural Opening Act live on Friday night, with five finalists competing for the chance to open for Shania Twain in Limerick this July.
Paddy Treacy from Fermanagh, Jesse Sludds from Wexford, Caitlin Mackin from Armagh, Midnight in Vegas, a girl band with members from Dublin, Waterford and Essex, and Ryan Phoenix from Cork have all secured their place in the live show.
Each act will perform their rendition of a country classic in the hope of being named Ireland's new Opening Act. As well as the support slot at Thomond Park, the winner will also earn a place on The Late Late Show Country Music Special next October.
Fermanagh singer Paddy Treacy was the first finalist to be announced earlier in the week. He said taking part in the competition was a dream come true and spoke of his excitement at performing on a show he had watched since childhood.
Wexford singer Jesse Sludds was revealed on Tuesday. The 19-year-old is among the young acts hoping the competition will bring his music to a wider audience and mark the next step in his career.
Armagh native Caitlin Mackin was announced as the third finalist. She said being half Filipino and half Irish had shaped her experience in country music, and that she wants to challenge ideas about who belongs in the genre.
Midnight in Vegas were confirmed as the fourth act in the running. The group, made up of Keli-Ann Corcoran, Phoebe Dipple and Jamie Sullivan, will bring their own harmonies and style to the line-up.
Cork singer Ryan Phoenix completed the final five on Friday morning. He said he was excited to share his music with a wider audience and called the chance to open for Shania Twain "an incredible experience".
Host Patrick Kielty will be joined on the night by a panel of guests from across the country music scene, including Una Healy, Sandy Kelly, Ben Earle of The Shires and broadcaster Tom Dunne.
Judging will be carried out by two juries made up of music industry and country experts, but viewers at home will also have their say. Public voting lines will open live during the show, with Cliona Hagan set to deliver the results of the public vote.
Friday’s programme will also pay tribute to the late Clannad singer Moya Brennan, who died this week aged 73.
The Late Late Show Opening Act airs on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player on Friday at 9.35pm.
Jesse Sludds is congratulated by Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty
Wexford teenager Jesse Sludds has been crowned the inaugural Late Late Show Opening Act winner - the search for Ireland's newest country music star.
The prize will see him opening for Shania Twain at Limerick's Thomond Park in July and opening The Late Late Show Country Special in October.
The 19-year-old full-time musician, who covered Tracy Chapman's Fast Car on the night, won the competition when the results of the public vote, the music industry jury vote, and the country music jury vote were combined.
When the result was announced, he told host Patrick Kielty: "Oh wow, I did not expect that at all. And to think that I wasn't going to do it (enter the competition) because I didn't think I was country enough!
"I had seen it online at first and I was like, 'Nah...', and then I had so many people talking to me I was like, 'Ah sure, go on then!' But, eh, wow!"
In the studio on the night, The Late Late Show's panel, made up of singers Una Healy and Sandy Kelly, The Shires' Ben Earle, and broadcaster and Something Happens frontman Tom Dunne, had all hailed Sludds's performance, describing him as "very special" (Healy), "an amazing voice" (Kelly), "a star" (Earle), and "sensational" (Dunne).
Also performing on the night and making new fans in the studio, at home, and on the juries were: Paddy Treacy from Fermanagh, Caitlin Mackin from Armagh, Ryan Phoenix from Cork, and Midnight in Vegas - a trio made up of Keli-Ann Corcoran from Dublin, Phoebe Dipple from Waterford, and Jamie Sullivan from Essex.
