Shania's surprise appearance steals CMAs

As a lot of people know, I love country music, but it's the sights as well as the sounds that brought me to the country table. And about a decade or so ago, no sight was more beautiful than Shania Twain.

She made a lot of guys who could previously care less about country, including yours truly, buy her records and stop clicking the remote when one of her videos came on screen.

But after turning the genre on its head for about a three-year period and selling out everywhere, Twain just went away and stopped making music and those stunning videos.

However, she's back. After divorcing perhaps the most stupid man on the planet, she made an appearance at the end of the CMA Awards on ABC on Wednesday. She received a standing ovation and said she hoped to be seeing a lot more of everybody. Talk about a sight for sore eyes or a shot in the arm for a music industry that's bound to be hit hard by this failing economy!

Shania, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Kellie Pickler, Miranda Lambert, Jennifer Nettles, NFL Sunday night singer Faith Hill....this is my starting lineup for why I care about country. I know, I know, I forgot about Taylor Swift. She's from Berks County and The Morning Call has adopted her as one of our own. I've interviewed her and she's a nice kid who is a gifted songwriter and come a long way in a hurry, but her voice just doesn't compare with the top singers and she'll need to do well with the younger set to stay important.

But after all of the awards were handed out...and most of the winners were deserving although I just don't get the whole Kenny Chesney craze....Shania's surprise appearance to announce the entertainer of the year stole the show.

Surprise guest Shania Twain was greeted by a standing ovation as she walked out on stage at this year's Country Music Association Awards to present the entertainer of the year trophy on Wednesday night.

Handing over the prize - which she herself was awarded in 1999 - the Ontario-born songstress was not only marking her first return to the event since 2004, but also her first public appearance since announcing her separation from husband Robert 'Mutt' Lange in May.

"It's good to see all of you too," the mother-of-one told the excited Nashville crowd, looking striking in a low-cut gown. "I hope to be seeing a lot more of you."

The happy recipient of the night's final award, Kenny Chesney, summed up the warm mood of the crowd as he took the trophy in his hands, telling Shania: "You look really good tonight."

Shania Twain, who has been out of the public eye for years, even before her recent high-profile split from music producer Jeff "Mutt" Lange, reemerged at the CMA Awards Wednesday night to present the Entertainer of the Year award to Kenny Chesney, and hinted at a comeback.

"You look really good tonight," Chesney told Twain. (Hey, they're both single now.)

"It's good to see all of you too," she told the crowd. "I hope to be seeing a lot more of you."

The hitmaker gave out the award for entertainer of the year on Wednesday night in Nashville, marking her first U.S. TV appearance since she separated from her husband, songwriter-record producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, amidst rumors he had an affair with a family friend. The audience greeted her with a rousing ovation.

So what goes on once the big awards ceremony is shut down in Nashville?  It seems like the ladies dominated the night as all eyes were on Shania Twain as she picked the Country Music Awards for her big break out post divorce announcement. Shania looked fabulous in a stunning gown as did former American Idol alum Kellie Pickler and teen sensation Taylor Swift.

People Magazine has a great behind the scenes look at the awards show with all of the post presentation gatherings of the stars.  They note that the big breakout gal of the evening (the soon to be Miss Shania twain) was spotted visiting with the legendary George Strait and Dancing with the Stars spinner and country star Julianne Hough at the bash.

Also spotted after the bas were Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, they made a few quick stops before getting right home to daughter Sunday Rose.   The magazine also reports that first time host Carrie Underwood was spotted chatting it up with her co-host Brad Paisley's wife Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Something About Jim).

Shania Twain Has Tongues Wagging

Nov. 17, 2008 Shania Twain was a surprise guest on last weeks Country Music Association Awards, making an appearance at the close of the show to present Kenny Chesney with the Entertainer of the Year award.

"You look really good," Kenny told her as he started his acceptance speech, but people continued talking about her even after the show.

"I actually didnt see her," Carrie Underwood who co-hosted the show with Brad Paisley told reporters backstage. "Everything happened so fast. She was like a super-secret surprise guest, so they kind of kept her under wraps. But, you know, it was great to have her back. Its definitely been awhile since shes hung out with all of us. I think everybody missed her, and its great to have her back."

Shania, who recently split with husband-producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange after 14 years of marriage, received a standing ovation from the industry-driven crowd. That was particularly noteworthy because she was the target of plenty of derision from Music Row when her album The Woman In Me started breaking sales records with its Def Leppard influences and her navel-baring videos.

But its a new day. Shanias rock influences arent nearly as boundary-pushing as the Metallica-like chords Jason Aldean used in his performance of "Shes Country," and there are plenty of new faces behind the scenes in the business who dont remember Shania as a controversial figure. Thats also true among artists, including Taylor Swift, who was just five years old when The Woman In Me was released.

Taylor met Shania for the first time at the awards, and she called the moment "awesome" in a blog posting. Shania told Taylor shes "doing a great job," particularly meaningful since Taylor says the Canadian singer was her original inspiration. Shania, Taylor says, is "the most impressive and independent and confident and successful female artist to ever hit country music." And after their introduction was over, Taylor cried as she experienced a "wave of gratitude."

Kenny, meanwhile, feels a kinship with Shania. Both have won the CMAs Entertainer of the Year honor, and both have had their marriages end amid a wave of uncomfortable public speculation.

"Relationships are hard anyway for anybody, but its even tougher when its a spectator sport," Kenny noted. "So I wish her all the best with it. Obviously shes an amazing artist, and it was really great to have her be a part of [the awards]. I think that she can do anything she wants to do."

"Great songs," he added, "is the key."

Shanias night on the town didnt end at the CMA Awards. She also made an appearance at a Universal Records after-party, where People spotted her chatting with George Strait and Julianne Hough.

It seems Kenny Chesney was having a good time at the CMAs being surrounded by all the famous ladies.  Reportedly before his on stage love of Shania Twain, he hit up Reese Witherspoon's dressing room to tell her he was a big fan and to let her know he thought she looked fabulous. "You look gorgeous tonight," he told her. 

Awww, what a nice guy.  Or maybe I should say, awwww, what a nice flirt!

Sheli M, the CMA contest winner from the Official Fan Club, has posted her review of the show.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that I had a great time at the CMA's. I took my best friend from high school, Stacie. She was the Maid of Honor in my wedding 19 years ago. In the attached picture, I am the one on the left. This was taken before we left the hotel to go to the show. I hope it comes through. We had a five hour road trip to Nashville. My GPS that I have named "Juanita" took us right to the Sommet Center. She did a great job.

After going to the will call to pick up our tickets we ended up at Tootsie's to have a drink to celebrate our arrival to Nashville. The waitress told us that Shania and Kenny Chesney had been there the previous two nights. I'm not sure that this was true though. She also said that Kenny was supposed to show up after the show in the back. We went back after the show and were there until 1am and no Kenny! I wonder whether we were being told the truth.

Our seats were about 15 rows from the top. So, thank GOD for the big screen. It was so thrilling to actually be in the same building with so many stars. My sister called while we were on the road to tell us that she read on the internet that Shania was going to be there. I am so sad to say my pictures didn't turn out worth a crap at the CMA's. The tickets said no cameras permitted in the show. I even asked the ticket office and they said no and that the security would be checking. So, in fear of losing a good camera I bought a disposable camera to try to sneak in. I was praying for at least a chance to see Shania up close and personal. Well it didn't turn out, but I had a wonderful trip. I was so proud and happy to see Shania's return. She was so beautiful. The Standing O was so awesome. It gave me goose bumps and a big tear. So worth waiting for. I read the blog that Taylor posted and how she about cried when she didn't have her camera when Shania came and talked to her. Well, I cried when I got my crappy pictures back. I could just kick myself for not taking my good camera. The security people weren't even checking. So, I can guarantee you that when Shania tours again and comes somewhere near Indianapolis I will have my good camera and no one will take it from me!!!!! I was at the UP! Concert in Indianapolis.

We were given programs and Mary Kay lipstick case with 2 lipsticks. I want to also thank Music Today for the wonderful opportunity to go to the show. I have never won anything in a contest before and this sure was a dream come true.

I also want to wish Shania the best on her new journey. She is the Queen! Go for it, you're the best.
