Shania Lands Her Own TV Show On Oprah Winfrey Network - Promo p. 2

On Oprah today, at the top of the show, she talked about her OWN network and said how many of the stars are at a crossroads in their lives, including Ryan & Tatum O'Neil and also SHANIA, and she showed a clip of Shania talking in a white studio, in front of a mic.
I have never seen that clip of Shania, so I guess it's new.

I've been watching the Countdown To OWN which launches today at noon ET. The stars are introducing and previewing their shows in 3-4 minute clips but I guess Shania didn't film a segment. The clips start over again every 30 minutes.

The first show on OWN right now is "Oprah's Guide To Own." They just showed about 2 1/2 minutes of clips from "Why Not?" Shania was talking about losing her ability to express herself, sing, and sing in front of people. She was feeling more pressure from her career the bigger it got and the pressure to be better and better all the time  She was slowly losing her voice and confidence while at the same time her marriage was slowly breaking down.  One day she learned her marriage was over and the next day she learned about the affair. She lost her sense of honesty, trust, etc.. She wanted to go out on this "tour" to talk to people who have been through big disappointments and emotional crisises and just listen to what they had to say. Then they showed Shania sky diving, rock climbing, horseback riding, visiting her parents' graves and hanging out with Frederic.

The show premieres in April.

Thanks Tommy - they seem to have covered a whole lot of territory in such a short clip.

The network, called OWN, will offer 600 hours of original fare in its first year, and aims to capitalise on Winfrey's phenomenal fan base as a presenter.

"Happy New Year everybody and welcome to OWN," said Winfrey told viewers she launched the, 24-hour seven-day-a-week television venture at midday US time.

"This is a very exciting day for me kicking off the next chapter of my life with all of you. Yes, the Oprah Winfrey Network is finally on the air."

Among the new programs to be aired on the channel are "Finding Sarah", hosted by Ms Ferguson, and "Why Not?" with Grammy-award winning Canadian diva Shania Twain, who says she has lost her confidence and ability to sing.

But while Winfrey's comfy couches have launched scores of careers, it remains unclear if her magic touch can carry an entire network.

I can see how any artist would feel extreme pressure to follow up such a successful series of alums (look at Michael Jackson, who didn't do well, post Thriller)

It's Shania's truth, and she will tell it.

I really, really hope this clip and future OWN show clips get posted to YouTube.

Does anyone know when Shania's piece was shown during this hour?  Beginning of the hour?  Middle of the hour?  End of the hour?

I really don't want to sit through the Oprah garbage just to see Shania.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Oprah Winfrey's bold gamble on her OWN TV network debuted to mostly positive reviews and encouraging audience numbers at the weekend, winning over some cynics with its feel-good tone.

But many stalwart Oprah fans expressed dismay that they could not receive the new OWN network without paying to upgrade their cable television packages -- money that several said they could not afford.

The OWN network, a joint venture between the influential talk show host and Discovery Communications that is aimed mostly at middle-aged women, made its debut on Saturday after three years of planning.

According to preliminary Nielsen figures, OWN was watched by an average one million Americans in prime time on Saturday, and was the third biggest ad-supported cable network with women aged 25-54.

Daytime talk show "The Oprah Winfrey Show", on free-to-air ABC, attracts about six million U.S. viewers daily. Winfrey, 56, will end the show in the fall of 2011 to focus on OWN.

Initial OWN programing included a behind-the-scenes show about the making of the last season of "The Oprah Winfrey Show", lifestyle advice from the likes of Dr. Phil MGraw and Suze Orman, and the first of a series of in-depth interviews with celebrities including record producer Jay-Z and journalist Diane Sawyer.

New York Times reviewer Alessandra Stanley called the channel a "no cynicism zone" which had "not a snicker of malice or a hint of raillery." Caryn James at Indiewire noted that beneath the "huge amount of lifestyle fluff" there was "a surprising layer of substance."

Media blogger Dan Abrams, a former general manager at cable news channel MSNBC, said his skepticism over whether OWN could create a clear identity in a crowded market had been overcome.

OWN's mission of self-discovery and celebration of one's own "best self" has impeccable timing, Abrams said.

"Weary Americans have grown fatigued with the national sports of bickering and finger pointing. Many are now seeking out a safe place on television far removed from the partisan hectoring, staged altercations and alcohol-induced 'hook-ups' that have come to dominate the airwaves," Abrams wrote in a column for his Mediaite.com website.

Matt Zoller Seitz at Salon.com said he was won over, to his surprise. "We won't just watch OWN; we will gaze upon it with awe and affection and marvel at the sweet magnificence of its founder," he said.

OWN is available in some 80 million homes, or 67 percent of U.S. households, on the channel that used to be occupied by Discovery Health. But many of Winfrey's millions of loyal fans were upset to find they could not access OWN without forking over hundreds of dollars extra to cable TV providers.

"I just cannot tell you how disillusioned (Oprah said "watch, watch, watch my new network") & disappointed. Oprah, did I miss the show that told us your new network was gonna cost us (the viewer) $$$$." wrote joeyskc on the OWN message boards on Monday.

A fan in New Orleans congratulated Winfrey on the new venture, but was concerned that "many people in our area will not be able to watch" the pay-to-view OWN channel. "We love you and will miss you," added Chey925.

Twain lost voice, confidence

Newlywed Shania Twain is hoping her new Oprah Winfrey Network series Why Not? inspires her to reclaim her crown as the queen of country music - after losing her voice and her confidence.

The Man, I Feel Like a Woman singer has revealed the pressures of superstardom and the break-up of her marriage to record producer Mutt Lange conspired to turn her into a bitter woman who no longer had any interest in recording and performing.

But  now Twain hopes her show on OWN, which debuts in April, will provide her with the tools she needs to reclaim her former glory.

She says, "I have lost my ability to express myself and my ability to sing... For some reason, I'm not comfortable singing in front of people anymore.

"I was feeling more pressure from my career, the bigger it got. I felt the pressure to be better and better all the time. It just effected me. I was slowly losing my voice and slowly losing my confidence... My marriage was slowly breaking down too."

She admits that when Lange left her, she felt a "real death," adding, "I really lost my sense of trust, compassion, honesty... I was really getting quite obsessive about my own pain and my struggle and I just had to snap out of it.

"On this tour (for TV series)... I wanna talk to people that have been through big disappointments, big emotional crises, deep life struggles and I will learn something from that... I will be inspired by other people."

Twain has started 2011 in style - she wed Frederic Thiebaud in Puerto Rico on Saturday, just weeks after announcing her engagement.

Shania Twain: "I Have Lost My Ability To Sing"

Shania Twain is taking a bit of a turn career-wise. It looks like she’s really focusing on her new Oprah Winfrey Network series, Why Not?, and steering away from music for the time being. Between the pressures of superstardom and the break-up of her prior marriage to Mutt Lange, it caused Shania to lose interest in recording – not to mention losing her voice, according to All Access. Twain reveals, “I have lost my ability to express myself and my ability to sing… For some reason, I’m not comfortable singing in front of people anymore.” Shania’s show on OWN will debut in April.

Shania Twain Finds Inspiration With New Reality Show

Posted Jan 8th 2011 10:00AM by Marianne Horner

When Shania Twain's 14-year marriage to Robert "Mutt" Lange came to an abrupt end in 2008, following the rock producer's alleged affair with the Canadian singer's close friend and secretary, Shania recalls feeling a "real death" ... adding, "I really lost my sense of trust, compassion, honesty."

Another thing the 'Man! I Feel Like A Woman' singer realized she'd lost was her sense of confidence. And that alone had a devastating impact on the very future of her multi-platinum singing career.

"I have lost my ability to express myself and my ability to sing," the five-time Grammy-winning superstar tells the Toronto Sun. "For some reason, I'm not comfortable singing in front of people anymore."

But Shania -- who kicked off 2011 oh, so romantically with a sunset marriage on New Year's Day to boyfriend, Frederic Thiebaud in Puerto Rico -- is anticipating a fresh new beginning, both personally and professionally, as the sun rises on the first day of the rest of her life.

"I was feeling more pressure from my career, the bigger it got," Shania realizes now, looking back over the course of her genre-crossing, superstar career. "I felt the pressure to be better and better all the time. It just affected me. I was slowly losing my voice and slowly losing my confidence. My marriage was slowly breaking down too."

In the devastating aftermath of the break-up of her marriage, Shania remembers, "I was really getting quite obsessive about my own pain and my struggle ... and I just had to snap out of it."

Today, with her own reality show, 'Why Not?' soon to debut on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), Shania is looking forward to being inspired by the emotional struggles of people she meets along the new pathway of her career, to help her find her inner confidence and voice, once again.

"On this tour [for TV series], I want to talk to people that have been through big disappointments, big emotional crises, deep life struggles," Shania anticipates. "And I will learn something from that ... I will be inspired by other people."

Look for Shania's new reality show, 'Why Not?' to debut on OWN network in April.

Uh-"O"!!! Let's hope OWN is still on the air by the time "Why Not?" airs! biggrin

Oprah's OWN Network Plummets in Ratings Two Weeks After Launch

NEW YORK – After a strong opening at the beginning of the year, ratings for OWN, the cable network joint venture of Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications, have declined, with shows with Winfrey’s name in the title remaining its strongest performers.

For its second week, ratings for OWN fell about 20 percent among its target demo of women over 25 years old, according to the New York Post. The average audience in prime time was 310,000 people.

Looking at total viewership, the network’s highest-rated shows are top-rated Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes, as well as Your OWN Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star and Ask Oprah's All Stars, it said.

Discovery and Winfrey have predicted bumps in the road, and most experts expected ratings to come down from a strong start.

OWN viewership so far is "a little lower than I'd thought it would be, but I don't think it's alarming," advertising expert Brad Adgate of Horizon Media told the Post. He pointed to network and cable series premieres this month, which are likely to affect OWN's performance.

Oprah Behind the Scenes saw more than 1.1 million viewers tuning into the first two episodes on New Year's Day, but by last week’s episode, the show’s viewers were cut in half to 557,000, according to the Post.

Gayle King's daily morning show, a simulcast of her satellite radio show that launched last week, is off to a slow start, with viewership dropping from 154,000 on its first day to 86,000 on day five, according to the Post.

Reruns of Dr. Phil are doing better, averaging 250,000 viewers, the paper said.

It looks like shows on OWN (including "Why Not?") wil be aired on a delayed basis in Canada. This article lists "Why Not?" premiering in the Spring/Summer which sounds like OWN will start airing shows from the beginning in Canada as it did in the U.s. on Jan. 1.

O, Canada
Oprah launches her much-hyped OWN channel north of the border
By Brad Oswald

FINALLY, Canada gets to have a cable-channel-launch frenzy of its very OWN.

Two full months after its Jan. 1 arrival on U.S. television, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will have its north-of-the-border debut next week, bringing an all-things-Oprah kind of schedule to the Corus Entertainment-owned specialty channel that is currently called Viva.

This rebranding -- which essentially replaces one female-skewed service with another -- will be accompanied by an inevitable and inescapable wave of promotion and hype. The two biggest questions surrounding the launch are these: Will the queen of all media, Oprah herself, travel to Canada to take part in the launch; and will the network see the same massive initial tune-in and subsequent ratings dropoff that its U.S. counterpart has experienced?

On the first point, Winfrey has expressed an interested in travelling north for OWN's Canuck kickoff, telling Entertainment Tonight Canada in January, "I love Canada so much that I recently said to my team that when we launch in Canada we should figure out a way I can get to Canada and say thank you to all our great viewers there."

And on the second issue, only time will tell. OWN had more than a million viewers tune in to sample its prime-time lineup during its Jan. 1 U.S. debut, but its numbers have declined steadily ever since, averaging fewer than 300,000 viewers in prime time during the first week of February -- placing it behind other female-targeted U.S. cable services such as Lifetime, Oxygen and WE network.

Not surprisingly, Corus's head of networks and marketing is nothing but enthusiastic about OWN's arrival in Canada.

"There's a lot of excitement building as we close in on the March 1 launch," Susan Schaefer said in a network press release. "OWN will showcase the power of the Oprah brand and will provide viewers with an unmatched programming experience."

It's probably true that Canadian viewers, like their U.S. Oprah-fan cousins, are excited about having more Winfrey in their TV diets. The final season of her long-running syndicated daytime show, Oprah, is generating huge audiences for the mainstream channels that carry it, and OWN's top-rated programs are those that have Oprah's name in their titles.

Since the network's U.S. debut, Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes (which will première in Canada with back-to-back episodes on Tuesday at 7 p.m.) has consistently been OWN's most-watched program.

But what else will Oprah-philes find when they flip their way over to Viva's former address on Tuesday? Here's a sampling of OWN's most prominent titles:

-- Ask Oprah's All-Stars (Sundays at 6 p.m.) -- Three of the Oprah show's most popular and frequent advice-dispensing guests, Dr. Phil McGraw, Suze Orman and Dr. Mehmet Oz, appear together in one show to answer viewers' questions about health, finance and general well-being.

-- The Gayle King Show (weekdays at 11 a.m.) -- O magazine editor-at-large (and Winfrey's longtime best pal) Gayle King brings her radio-show format to TV, offering interviews and opinions on current events, celebrity culture, hot topics and lifestyle trends.

Oprah Winfrey's new TV channel fails to win viewers

Oprah Winfrey's new television channel is floundering in the ratings as it struggles to pull in viewers

By Nick Allen, Los Angeles
6:03PM GMT 01 Mar 2011

The OWN channel, which launched two months ago, is being watched by only 135,000 people at any one time.

The ratings are 10 per cent lower than for the cable channel it replaced which was called Discovery Health.

And only 45,000 of those watching are women aged 25 to 54, the audience the channel is being aimed at.

Miss Winfrey, 57, has urged patience and supporters say ratings will improve when the chat show host begins appearing more regularly herself towards the end of the year.

She will still be busy filming "The Oprah Winfrey Show" for the ABC network until September, but will then be able to devote more time to her own channel. That will include having her own show two or three nights a week.

Her current, Chicago-based show has run for 25 years and made her one of the most powerful people in America. It currently attracts seven million viewers daily.

OWN, which is based in Los Angeles, launched on New Year's Day and pulled in 1.2 million viewers, but that has declined.

The channel is a joint $239 million venture between the chat show queen and Discovery, and reaches 70 million homes across America.

It is aiming to provide 600 hours of original programming but has initially included many repeats.

The new programmes include a yet to be broadcast reality series hosted by the Duchess of York.

Miss Winfrey, who is worth an estimated $2.7 billion said recently: "I think we're going to have some perhaps rocky times with the channel, keeping people there and keeping people motivated to keep watching, keeping them engaged."

Discovery CFO: OWN Joint-Venture Is 'A Work in Progress'

Brad Singer tells Media & Telecom Conference Monday that advertisers are on board long term, but the "hardest part" will be growing the audience.

The OWN Network is a work in progress, with audience numbers expected to grow in the second half of the year as shows starring Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O'Donnell and Shania Twain debut, Discovery Communications CFO Brad Singer said Monday.

Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Media & Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, Fla., Singer said advertisers are on board long term at the Discovery-Winfrey joint-venture OWN, and the "hardest part" will be growing the audience.

The executive had similar thoughts about the Hub, Discovery's joint venture channel with toymaker Hasbro. However, with an additional revenue stream beyond advertising and subscription fees -- that being merchandise sales -- that network is self-funding, he said.

The Hub, he said, has seen "a lot of success compared to Discovery Kids," which was replaced by the Hub in October.

Singer also said that the scatter market in the fourth quarter for shows across the various Discovery networks was strong and that he sees a continuation of that trend in the current quarter.

"All our categories seem to be OK," Singer said.

Here is an article about OWN making changes to its schedule due to poor ratings thus far. In the article it says Shania's show will air in the Summer. Has it in fact moved from Spring/April to Summer?

OWN reboots

Oprah tries ending slump with fresh reality TV

Oprah's new cable network -- which has not been able to get much traction since its blockbuster opening week -- is getting the "reboot."

Network officials have quietly been telling worried advertisers that OWN, Oprah's new channel, will begin reshuffling its lineup in the next weeks and investing millions in advertising to win back faithful viewers.

The network's only bona fide hit -- "Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes" -- is about to become the "anchor show" for the fledgling network, according to media execs who have heard the new pitch.

"We're doing a lot of changes to the schedule," a spokesman for OWN confirmed yesterday.

The "reboot" -- the term OWN is using with potential advertisers -- will start later this month when "Behind the Scenes" is shifted to Sunday night.

The Oprah channel spent more than $10 million in advertising to get OWN started. The new ad push -- most of it spent on other cable networks like TNT and TBS -- will be about half that, according to reports.

"Ever since the launch, they've been kind of dark," said one media exec close to OWN. "The intention is to get back out there and let people know." Moving "Behind the Scenes" -- which chronicles the final season of Winfrey's daytime talk show -- from Friday to Sunday night is the first step.

Sunday is the biggest TV-watching night of the week. Bigger numbers for Oprah's show -- the only one on OWN she appears on right now -- will raise the network's weak, weekly ratings average -- and perhaps end the flood of bad publicity about its rating woes.

"You have to fish where the fish are," as a spokesman for the network put it.

Last week, it was reported that OWN's audience had fallen briefly below what the channel it replaced, Discovery Health, had been getting.

Whether the changes represent a serious regrouping for Oprah or just a new case of growing pains is a matter of argument.

But, barely two months after its launch, the network -- after insisting that everything so far was going along as planned -- is starting to move around the furniture.

The network has cut back the number of nights with original shows from four to three (Friday night was dropped) in the new reboot.

Celebrity reality shows -- beginning with a six-week series starring the battling mother-daughter singing duo Naomi and Wynonna Judd and followed this summer by shows starring singer Shania Twain and the Dutchess of York Sarah Ferguson -- are getting the next hard push in the ad campaigns.

Financially, the network was born with a silver spoon in its mouth and, at least for the short run, does not have to worry about money.

Advertisers like Procter & Gamble agreed to pay the network $100 million for the first three years, unprecedented for a cable channel that was started from scratch, based solely on Oprah's reputation.

OWN soon will have to show that it can deliver Oprah-sized audiences -- and so far that has eluded them.

Mention of NEW music!

SHANIA TWAIN-WHY NOT on Oprah t.v.-YOU LOVE HER..BUT will you subscribe to the speciality channel-by john emms

All you Shania fans all over the world. Shania has did it all for you guys and girls. Whether she was inspiring you with her life story, posing in lingerie (for you guys) singing her songs all over the world, or getting over heartbreak and is happily married again (for you girls)  Look, on my end, folks  she is very likeable.

 os.jpg?w=439&h=292

But, are you going to pay a speciality channel price to see her show here in Canada or anywhere in the world?

And to be honest I  think the show is going to be super interesting on all levels. If the show was part of your regular cable or satellite package then that would be okay.

For example if it was broadcast  just on regular t.v. CTV, Global etc. or whatever no problem. But, extra bucks for the Oprah t.v., which I will not watch. Umm, don’t know.

Look,  Shania  was about  a 2 minute walk from my home in Timmins  not long ago filming with the Oprah TV team.

shania-twain-house.jpg?w=412&h=312

I saw the buses but it just looked like a stay away thing. In fact, I was walking to the corner store to buy a lottery ticket.

None of the media in our city were told about it. I knew it on the day, and made a brief post on facebook page. Then took it down. I did not want to be un-professional because I like Shania and the way she has inspired people

I liked her 30 years ago, when she was singing in the bars and our band was playing across the street.

I liked her when I got the first nod for questions in the media tent on her homecoming concert.  And yes I think UP is one of the best pop albums of the last 20 years.

But  again, will I or you pay extra bucks to view the Oprah Network?

On the musical side of things, I believe Shania has been recording some stuff in the studio secretly.  I’m also thinking the producer on some songs COULD BE the hugely talented Kevin Churko (Ozzy’s latest)

If Shania is going to talk about initmate details on her new t.v. show and reveal them in her new book, then let’s hope she also writes a few songs in the same manner. I like the pop songs, but let’s hear some really heartfelt gut emotions in NEW songs.

Oprah t.v comes to Canada in about 2 weeks.

Why Not? With Shania Twain

Why Not? With Shania Twain is a reality television series from the Oprah Winfrey Network starring the best-selling female country artist of all time, Shania Twain, as she invites viewers to join her on her quest for a new, happier phase of life. After her meteoric rise to popularity in the 1990s with her string of hit singles and music videos, Shania fell from stardom in 2008 when she discovered her husband, Robert Lange, was having an affair with an employee and friend of Shania's named Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Shania struggled through the heartbreak as her marriage fell apart, focusing on raising her son Eja and getting her career back on track. Now, Shania's fans can watch as she takes one challenge at a time, traveling the world, going on adventures, and refusing to ever give up. Why Not? With Shania Twain is a revealing and heart-felt portrait of one star's journey back to the top.

Premiering at 11:00pm and then 10:00pm weekly = not exactly a good time slot in my opinion.

I agree, that's an odd timeslot.

This sounds rather ridiculous.  A grief counselor??  The nation of Japan is in crisis, but Shania-freaking-Twain has to meet with a grief counselor because her voice isn't all that great?

If this show has a "woe-is-me" feel to it, it really has the potential to backfire in Shania's face.  It could make her look petty and out of touch with reality.

Going to a grief counselor over her voice.  Ugh. no

Why Not? with Shania Twain Premieres Sunday, May 8 at 11 p.m. ET

ST_Vegas_Roof_22165-rs.jpg

Why Not? with Shania Twain" intimately documents the amazing journey of the music superstar who, by the age of 21, had survived a childhood of poverty and the loss of both her parents in a devastating accident. She went on to become the best-selling female artist in country music history.  Then at the height of superstardom, Twain was blindsided by a double-betrayal shattering her 14-year marriage. Now she opens up about her life-altering heartbreak and how she's moving on.  Viewers will follow Twain as she begins her climb back to the top through a personal journey filled with risk, revelations and unexpected adventures.

In the series, Twain sets out on a tour of healing, sharing and rediscovering her voice.  She returns to her childhood home in Timmins, Northern Ontario with her sister, Carrie Ann, to revisit the memories of their adolescence and their parents shocking death.  She then continues on her journey with her bandmates and closest confidants as she steps out of her comfort zone on a cross-country adventure.  Along the way, Twain meets with vocal doctors and coaches, as well as a grief counselor to work through the emotional connection of her vocal restrictions.  She also meets with people and families that have experienced similar hardships in their lives, and has intimate one-on-one conversations with experts in the music industry including Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie and David Foster, who provide guidance and inspiration as she attempts to reclaim her voice.

Sneak Preview: Shania Twain's reality show

When Shania Twain guest-judged on "American Idol" last season, I was taken aback and totally won over by the frank way in which she expressed herself with no regard for the wonderful nonsense that came out of her mouth. So when Oprah Winfrey announced that the singer would be headlining her OWN reality show, visions of an "Osbournes" redux danced in my head.

As it turns out, "Why Not? with Shania Twain" is a much more serious, yet no less compelling, look at the singer's life in the wake of her unexpected divorce as she travels the country on tour that will benefit her career as much as it will her mental well-being.

From revisiting her childhood home to working with grief counselors, Shania uses the show to chronicle what it takes to climb out of the darkness and shine like a superstar once again.

Check out a preview of "Why Not? with Shania Twain" to see if you'll be watching:
