Yes, I remember this shot. It was a little on the soft core side and wondered what it had to do with music. I figured that it was for her male fans. She played into that sex object image when it suited her. I can't say that I was terribly bothered by it, but felt like she was minimizing her talents by displaying T&A as often as she could. It reinforced the stereotype that Mutt was the mastermind rocker while she was his trophy wife. She kinda remined me of the rock vixens of the 80s in the Motley Crue, Warrant, Twisted Sister and other bands. They were beautiful women, but not terribly sophisticated in their sexuality. I used to know a friend in the 90s who was bothered when she saw Shania pictures where she made a 'slut face' as she called it. Being a man, I didn't care, but can see how some women may care about the image that they put out there.

I think that the sex kitten image and not her singing pop songs is what may have taken away some of her credibility as an artist in Nashville. She isn't the first country singer to go pop; that story is as old as Music Row itself. In the end Shania suffered for it as she's still struggling to make a comeback that is different than what she was known for. It's kinda like an adult film actress trying to break into mainstream movies when she gets older. I'm not saying Shania was doing porn in these pics, but they are not suitable for kids. She wasn't just posing pretty for the camera like Cinderella.

There are many reasons for the air of inevitability around “Tuskegee,” the sleek, sure-footed new country duets album by Lionel Richie. Start with the mainstreaming of country music, with Nashville’s embrace of soft rock and soaring pop. Then take the demographics: Mr. Richie is 62, with a multigenerational fan base and a durable catalog of hits. Consider too that the all-star duets album is a proven route to career rehabilitation, and that country listeners make up a big chunk of the public that still buys albums.

You could take all of the above into account and begin to see how natural it is that Mr. Richie opened at No. 2 on the pop charts, behind another confoundingly well-preserved agent of reinvention, Madonna. But then you’d be leaving out the influence of reality singing competitions, with their endless reframing of songs across genre lines. If you’ve been watching “The Voice” this season, you’ve seen Mr. Richie pull a shift as a mentor; you’ve also seen Blake Shelton, one of the show’s judges, dispense big-brotherly advice.

Mr. Shelton’s is the first voice you hear on “Tuskegee,” singing the opening verse of “You Are” with a credible yearning. And what’s striking right away is the common-sense comfort of the pairing: not Mr. Shelton with Mr. Richie, necessarily, but Mr. Shelton with the song.

Like many of this album’s other guests — Little Big Town on “Deep River Woman,” Kenny Chesney on “My Love,” and especially Jennifer Nettles on a cathartic “Hello” — he sounds as if he’s thinking of his perennial injunction to “make it your own.” (Rascal Flatts, taking the same tack with “Dancing on the Ceiling,” manages to make the original seem tasteful, almost subtle. A few others, like Jason Aldean and Tim McGraw, can’t quite transcend the material.)

For his part, Mr. Richie sounds terrific: easeful and soulful, if no longer exactly youthful. The characteristic smoothness of his delivery makes him both an approachable partner and a malleable backup singer. He strikes a fine blend with Darius Rucker in “Stuck On You,” but his most inspired supporting work comes on “Endless Love,” featuring Shania Twain, coaxed out of retirement to deliver the album’s most stirring vocal performance. (Ms. Twain appears in a music video for the song, but sadly won’t be among the guests on “ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends — in Concert,” scheduled for Friday night on CBS.)

Mr. Richie, born and reared in Tuskegee, Ala., has said that making this album felt like coming home. That’s a nod to his Southern roots, but it might just as well refer to the crossover fluidity of a song like “Lady,” the smash he wrote for Kenny Rogers more than 30 years ago. That song arrives near the album’s close, before an amiable “Easy” with Willie Nelson and an obvious “All Night Long” with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. It’s the old-timer’s corner, and Mr. Richie seems happy there, though he clearly has other designs. NATE CHINEN

Unless you've been living under a rock, most of us, have refered to shania being retired from performing for years now, but still active, in other areas.

I agree with everything you said. I will never understand why she would do such photo shoots when she has so much talent.

I have yet to hear it on Sirius or my fm station.

Even on Sirius, I usually do not hear Shania too often. I guess when you step away for so long, the requests for your music go way down.

Too bad, I like this duet--wish it was doing better. If she performed it on just ONE show--I guarantee it would have been a HUGE hit. She has that power--too bad she does not want to use her stage charisma to help it out.

On another note--AARP magazine, the mag for seniors, showcased Shania and Lionel's album! I had to laugh at her music now being aimed at seniors.....oh well, we all get older ;)

They play it on SiriusXm stations The Blend (channel 16) and SiriusXm Love (channel 17). You can email in requests and they will play it!
