Will it just go to country radio in the US, or will it be released in Europe?

SHANIA TWAIN'S NEW SINGLE "TODAY IS YOUR DAY" TO PREMIERE DURING FINALE EPISODE OF "WHY NOT? WITH SHANIA TWAIN" NEXT SUNDAY, JUNE 12 AT 10 P.M. ET/PT ON OWN: OPRAH WINFREY NETWORK

Marks First New Single From The Music Superstar In Six Years

Los Angeles, CA - OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network viewers will experience the world premiere of the first new single in six years from country/pop superstar Shania Twain during the finale episode of "Why Not? with Shania Twain" airing Sunday, June 12 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

"Today Is Your Day" will be exclusively available on iTunes immediately following the world premiere on OWN starting Sunday, June 12 at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Mercury Nashville will service the song to country radio stations after the show's airing.

"Today Is Your Day" is the first song Twain has written solo in six years, and the creation process for the single was documented throughout the docu-series "Why Not? with Shania Twain" currently airing Sundays on OWN. Twain is seen as she works through the lyrics, meets with vocal doctors and a grief counselor and embarks on unexpected adventures throughout North America that test her courage and self-confidence in an effort to reclaim her life.

In an all new episode titled "Finding My Voice" airing this Sunday, June 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Twain has a one-on-one vocal training session with legendary vocal coach Eric Vetro before meeting with famed music producer David Foster to discuss producing her new single "Today is Your Day."

Twain then reaches the end of her tour on Sunday, June 12 at 10 p.m. ET/PT in the finale episode titled "Endless Love," as she marries Frederic Thiebaud and shares never-before-seen wedding footage from the Bahamas. As Twain faces her final challenge, recording a duet of "Endless Love" with superstar Lionel Richie, she reflects on the journey that has brought her to this point in her life.

Granted, there's a slight whiff of, umm, overexposure surrounding Shania Twain these days.

First, news of the surreal change-partners ending to her relationship with producer/husband/Svengali Mutt Lange surfaced. Then, she published a tell-all memoir, “From This Moment On,” which became an instant New York Times bestseller. Then: Her very own reality show on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, “Why Not? With Shania Twain,” which documents her gradual return to recording. This Sunday’s episode: “Finding My Voice,” which films her consulting with renowned vocal coach Eric Vetro, then meeting with noted producer David Foster, working to get her career back on track.

Will the proof be in the pop-flavored pudding?

Fans will find out together on the Sunday, June 12 episode, at 10 p.m. That’s when Twain will be premiering her comeback single “Today Is Your Day,” her first new material in six long years. Then at 11 p.m., the track goes on sale via iTunes.

And yes, we should care about her return.

The five-time Grammy winner’s 1997 “Come On Over” release went on to become the best-selling album of all time by a female, as well as the best-selling country album of all time. She’s also won a stunning 27 BMI Songwriter Awards, and just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Track her progress at www.shaniatwain.com .

The expected return of Shania Twain

Jeffrey Remz  |  June 3, 2011

While Garth Brooks' return is going to happen any year now - that's pretty much a given - it seemed predictable that Shania Twain would re-enter the mainstream also.

Twain has had her ups and downs with more downs in recent years. After years of success and major tours, Twain seemed to go her own way. She wasn't of Nashville, even if it was Nashville's mainstream pop machine that catapulted her to fame and fortune.

But then her marriage to producer/husband Robert "Mutt" Lange fell apart allegedly over infidelity. Twain also wasn't putting out any music, but then she found love (interestingly enough with the ex-husband of Lange's supposed love interest, who was an aide to the Twain household).

After that travail, it seemed increasingly clear that Twain was heading back towards a public career. She released her autobiography last month and also has a show on the Oprah Winfrey Network about her life.

On Sunday, Twain will unleash her new single, Today Is Your Day- her first in six years - on the final episode of "Why Not? With Shania Twain" at 10 p.m. eastern/Pacific.

No doubt an album will follow, and one would suspect a tour.

What will be interesting is how Twain will be received. In the music biz, six years is a lifetime. Will her fans stick with her?

One suspects Brooks' fans, for example, would show up in a heartbeat. Then again, Brooks has been enough of a public figure through occasional songs and appearances to almost guarantee that. Any time he has concerts - Los Angeles and Nashville, for example, in the wake of natural disasters in recent years - the fans showed up en masse.

Twain has been far more private, living in Switzerland and New Zealand, having a kid, but making sure she was far far away from the limelight. Hopefully - except for the marital problems - she lived the life she wanted to live. She may end up having to pay for that when it comes to her career.

Of course, a hit single or two or a solid disc can change all that.

On the show tonight, you can hear the song basically has the same tune as "Easy" by The Commodores (lead-singer is Lionel Richie). Pretty "weird" if you ask me!

Apparently Shania's publicist at UMG Nashville sent out an email to press this morning clarifying that Nathan Chapman, not David Foster, produced her single. Shania is also a co-producer.

The press release says that the song will be "serviced" to country radio stations. Why? That sounds like an Adult Contemporary song to me. Bring back the banjo!!!!

I would be interested in buying the more organic version with Carrie on backup vocals, if such a version exists.

I like the song 'Today Is Your Day'.

I was really sad to hear about Shania's split with Mutt, and one of the reasons I was sad was because he is a BRILLIANT producer and writer.

I will miss the music he would have made with Shania, but I'm looking forward to more music from Shania in the near future.

I'm glad she's making music again, even if it's not the 'stadium-hit-friendly' stuff she did with Mutt.

"Today Is Your Day" release date June 12 - Now available on iTunes

I think it could have had better production, for example...remember when Shania was in David Foster's studio and he was talking about the middle part where she goes... 'Life's Gonna Kick You.. Around..' that part is a little 'lacking'  and awkward... somehow. Mutt always looked for perfection...and a mega HIT. ...but this is me being critical of the production, NOT the song writing at all.

I loved the organic, acoustic version we saw on her show, with just Shania, Carrie, Cory and Kenny...that was THE BEST!

BUT...I am a mega fan, and I want to give Shania my SUPPORT so I am buying it right now as a single! I think lots of her fans will buy it, like me, to support Shania and it will be a hit in that way....but it is certainly no 'Any Man of Mine'.

I miss Mutt. I hate Marie-Anne even MORE now. disbelief

It ain't even "This Man of Mine", which I cannot believe was never officially released.

RE: "Today Is Your Day" release date June 12

Today is not an engaging song; the only good thing about it are the positive lyrics. The distortion reminds me of some 1970s music with dated reverb. Vocally she sounds insipid and all that she does right is sing the right notes and melodies. Now I see why she's going to Vegas; it really is the elephant's graveyard. At this point in Shania's career I believe that she should go back to country and leave the pop/AC stuff alone because without Mutt she cannot make that kind of music sound fun. She has the potential to make a killer country album with her trajectory and instead came out with pap. I get the impression that after Shania became huge, she distanced herself from country music and its culture, and slowly lost her musical soul. She is a country girl after all, something that Dolly Parton and George Strait never forgot and they are still going strong. I am rather disappointed that this is the end result of a 6 year hiatus.

I could tell last week on the show that there was "nothing" to the song. Actually I think Shania is at her best with Pop/Pop-Country which Mutt is a master at. After hearing "Today Is Your Day," we now know that sound and those days are long gone. Where does she go from here? I don't even know how to classify "Today" as a specific genre. It's just weird!!!!!!!

I thought they would jazz it up somehow to make it sound like something.  Darn shame.

At times it sounds like a dated pop song while others remind me of a radio ad (the music at least) for something relaxing like maybe a trip to Italy, a diamond jeweler, Summer's Breeze or any form of advertisement geared towards women.

Just checked iTunes, and on the Country charts, 'Today' is number 11!

Pretty good for a song that's been available for (as of now) 12 hours. Should spike up in the next few days after the tv show's finale.

I absolutely LOVE the song! It's very inspiring and so well written. It's not country at all and I think the part when she sings "It's gonna kick you etc" sounded better when she was in studio with David Foster. But overall it's a great song and I really hope radios and her fans will give her all the support she deserves.
#11 after just 12 hours is a GREAT way to start! It looks like fans are still out there waiting for her music

I'm not a fan of the song. It's very Oprah-audience friendly. Which means I personally think it's very boring. I want sassy Shania, not sappy Shania.

Of course I prefer the genius of the Mutt 'kick ass' songs, but Shania's coming from a very fragile place, we're lucky to have her recording, singing at all.

It's supposedly being released to all radio stations after "Why Not?" airs tonight. That was also when it was supposed to be available on iTunes but....

Shania Twain releases first single in six years

June 12, 2011 6:04 pm ET

Shania Twain has released her new single, Today Is Your Day, which is her first single in six years. The country star was unsure about making her return to music, but it seems as though she has decided that she is going to give it another go.

After her shocking split from husband, Mutt Lange, Twain "lost her voice," something that she chronicles on her new show, entitled Why Not? Just weeks after the show premiered on the OWN Network, the superstar has found her sea legs, and has returned to the realm of country music.

Shania Twain has announced a new show in Las Vegas, which will start in December of 2012. The show is called Shania: Still the One, and she has inked a deal that will have her on stage at Caesar's Palace for two years. Her latest single is a ballad, and it's very Michael Buble. It's very inspirational, and fans are excited to have their girl back!

'Today (Is Your Day)' single

Shania Twain, the country pop singer that brought us hits like "Man! I feel Like a Woman!” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” has released her newest single.

Titled “Today (Is Your Day),” the song sounds like something Colbie Caillat would sing—it’s uplifting, encouraging and upbeat. However, the repetition throughout the 3-minute song is a little overwhelming.

Twain repeats, “Today is your day/ And nothing can stand in your way” a little too much and it gets old rather quickly. Can’t we see some variation every now and then?

While the instrumental background is impressive, it still doesn’t possess the Twain that is so prominent in the rest of her songs. There are no powerful punches in “Today (Is Your Day)” and the chorus is lacking the hook that keeps the 45-year-old singer’s fans coming back for more.

Shania Twain, ‘Today Is Your Day’ – Song Review

Younger country fans may not remember that 10 years ago, Shania Twain was the female voice more traditional listeners labeled as “too pop.” It didn’t seem to matter, as Twain sold just under one gazillion records in the span of a decade. Her newly released song ‘Today Is Your Day’ sounds like a Shania Twain song from that era, but the singer takes none of the chances.

Twain is drawing from her own experiences as she sings the first verse. One imagines the singer giving herself a pep-talk: “You got what it takes, you can win / Today is your day to begin / Don’t give up here /  Don’t you quit / The moment is now, this is it / Know that you can then you will / Get to the top of the hill / Part of the fun is the climb / You just got to make you your mind.”

A great Shania Twain song was about the attitude and the story more than the poetry, but these lyrics feel a tad trite, even by her standards. The chorus doesn’t prove to be much more original: “Today is your day / Nothing can stand in your way / Today is your day / Everything’s going your way / Today / Today / Today / Today.”

Despite this, there is something peaceful about Twain’s melody. She sings with genuine redemption in her voice, and there is no doubt many of her fans will be inspired by the three-minute long ballad. The generated vocal effects won’t help with her reputation as being “too pop.” In fact, they feel a bit dated. She does get credit for continuing to zig in that direction, while country radio zags toward a more traditional sound.
