Wow, I'm so upset! I really don't like We Got Something They Don't. The production is messy and the brass section is distracting. The US OPEN promo sounded funky and cool but the actual song somehow lost all that funk. I'm hoping it'll grow on me... 

*Okay, on fifth listen now and the brass doesn't bother me as much.

Her voice during the verses reminds me the one you can hear on the unofficially released album "The Beginnings".
Anyway, the new sound is refreshing, she reinvented herself.
The brass section of WGSTD is what makes the song great in my opinion.
When I first read there would be a brass section on the song I didn't know what to think, I was perplexed. But it's what makes the song so triumphant.

Yes it's catchy, but everytime I'm listening those brand new tracks I need more listening, and first impressions are always weaks...I couldn't believe I would miss Mutt so much no

Oh I have to disagree. I don't miss Mutt at all. I think the music would have sounded very outdated if it would of been him. I didn't like his production on the songs he produced for her GH record or for "Shoes". Doesn't mean I didn't like the songs, just think it could have been better. What I like about these new songs is that, they are new to Shania's style, but at the same time, still sounds like a Shania song. But I think that's just her voice alone that gives that vibe. SHANIA'S BACK Y'ALL!!!

Hi,
With every new song I will repeat myself Mutt who?!! And another thought enough with the foreplay on the album release. Just do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's just like at her Rock This Country Concert where she wore the dark glasses through the first 3 songs and when she finally took them off it was like Wow!!!
It was well planned and on purpose just like the album release is. There is a method to the madness and that is to drive the fans mad waiting.  With her it is always a well planned waiting game.

But we all know the wait is more than worth it because of what we end up getting.

 I agree. I remember listening to Up! when it was first released and thought the production kinda sounded dated (even though that's the album that made me a fan.) All the new songs on her GH album was forgettable and don't even get me started on Shoes. 😅

Shania Twain interview: 'I don't have anything to hide'

Legendary Queen of country pop on her new album ‘Now’, becoming reacquainted with fans and why this will likely be the ‘purest’ record she will ever make

Shania Twain is an icon, let’s begin with that.

Top-selling female country artist of all time; an artist with five Grammy awards under her leopard print belt; 75 million records sold worldwide, and three diamond-certified albums: 1995’s The Woman In Me, 1997’s Come On Over – one of the biggest-selling albums in music history – and 2002’s Up!

When she announced that she would release a new album, Now – her first in 15 years – in September this year, it felt like the return of a long-lost, much-loved family member. It followed an eight-year battle with Lyme disease, a recovery that saw her take on a two-year Las Vegas residency in 2012, and the launch of a comeback tour in 2015: Rock This Country.

This writer was one of the many, many fans who first heard her music aged five, thanks to a parent buying her second, record-breaking album Come On Over – a parent who would later come to regret that purchase when said fan forced them to watch the 16 dance routines they had come up with for each track on the album. Especially since they played that album pretty much every day for the next 10 years. 

In a room at the Langham hotel in Piccadilly, London on a Friday afternoon – two days before she performs a triumphant 30 minute set for Radio 2’s Live In Hyde Park – Twain sits and chatters excitedly about the new album, with more energy than seems fair considering she’s been awake and on press duty since 6am.

It’s only (appropriately) now, that Twain feels as though she’s had the opportunity to enjoy the impact that her career has had on herself, on her fans, and on the industry. Now, she has a clear perspective on things.

“What’s really hitting me in this last round – even some of the journalists, people in radio, so many people in the industry, and the fans, were child fans,” she says, beaming. “So it’s like there’s been some sort of time warp.

“It’s the weirdest thing, I’m telling you – I didn’t even think of it until recently. I was on my tour a year and a half ago, I was seeing all these 20- to 35-year-olds and I’m thinking, why would anybody in their 20s even know who I am?” she says laughing.

“Then I started meeting them, they’d tell me I was their first concert, their first record, and it dawned on me. Of course! So now I understand it, and it’s just so cool, it’s so much fun for me. A lot of artists don’t have that privilege, so I’m so excited that I get to talk to the people who can now speak for themselves. I missed a lot of that in the moment, and now I’m really in a different place.”

Now is by far the most brutally personal record Twain has ever made; songs such as “Poor Me” seemingly narrating some of the toughest moments in her life as though it was yesterday. Writing this album was an opportunity to create something on her own, where before she was used to working with her then-husband, producer Mutt Lange.

“I didn’t want it to be influenced,” she nods. “It will probably be the purest album, in that sense, that I ever make.

“Will I write a whole album myself again? It’s very lonely and isolating to do that. I enjoyed it, and I needed to do it. I write songs alone, I’ve done that all of my life, and my collaboration with Mutt was still a lot of time writing. So writing alone meant that I would take on all the responsibility, I would be isolated and probably lost, not really having perspective. So it was bound to be this personal – I let it be – and I needed it, I really needed the therapy of that.”

Twain has said that Now is not a divorce album, and that’s not how it sounds. There’s little in the way of resentment or bitterness – she even seems to poke fun at self-pity a little on “Poor Me” – and more about moving on and feeling a renewed sense of optimism, heard most clearly in the record’s first single: “Life’s About To Get Good”.

But in some way, perhaps Now is also a sort of closure, helping her to come to terms with the end of a relationship – personal and professional – that was dissected and commented on by the tabloid press for years.

“I think transparency and being upfront is so valuable, and that’s another reason why I wrote this album,” she says. “I don’t have anything to hide. I feel a lot lighter just responding to whatever people are curious about. I like expressing myself through music … that’s the way I express myself best.

“The timing for this album for me was very important – I don’t want to have to dodge around questions, avoid things. It’s so much easier to be open. It’s so empowering. It’s scary to take the risk, and to take on that challenge, but the reward is so great, and it was necessary for me anyway. Even if it hadn’t worked, I had to do it.”

Despite all that time away from the spotlight, and from the inner workings of the music industry, Twain hasn’t lost that uncanny ability to throw genres you’d think should never be put together onto the same track (“You should have seen the producer’s face when I said I wanted reggae on the outbeat!” she guffaws) and come out with a record that is polished, consistent, and 100 per cent Shania.

Choosing producers was a careful process that saw her whittle what began as a long list down to just four: Ron Aniello [Bruce Springsteen], Matthew Koma [Zedd], Jacquire King [Tom Waits, Kings of Leon], and Jake Gosling [Ed Sheeran, The Libertines, One Direction].

“They’re all so different from one another, but what I was looking for in all of them was that they respected the fact that I was going to be a loner on this,” she says. “I needed to go through it alone. And if that meant that they only wanted to do one song, or not at all … that was part of my decision process: who was most open to taking me as I am and taking the chance on me. And who was open enough to allow me in the production.

“I felt I needed to be a part of the direction of, sonically,” she continues. “I couldn’t just let the songs go like that. I based my list on talent, but then I had to go through the process of saying: ‘Before we go any further … this is what my involvement has to be.’”

Back when Come On Over was released – 20 years ago to the day on 4 November – Twain’s pioneering crossover from country to pop was controversial, but now US radio is brimming over with country artists who bring everything from rock to pop to reggae into their sound. Has Nashville warmed to the idea of genre-hopping?

“I don’t know,” Twain says, smiling as she considers it. “I’d have to talk to Taylor Swift about that. She was a crossover artist, between country and pop, and then was all of a sudden not country anymore. I don’t know whether that was a conscious decision on her part or the industry. But country music in America … there are a lot more pop-y sounding records on the radio, for sure.

“Some people are very protective of their genre, some artists are like: ‘I only sing jazz, that’s what I do’ and they don’t want to do anything else, even though they’re very capable. It’s different if you’re starting out, maybe, but I feel like, I write the music for my fans, and I believe in them, that they will relate to my music.”

Twain admits she isn’t sure if she would have enjoyed the same, phenomenal success if she had begun her career in 2017.

“It’s so much harder to establish longevity, I believe that,” she says. “In fairness to myself I was established over a long period of time. But it is harder to do that now, with everything moving at a different pace.

“Maybe if I was coming out now I wouldn’t have the opportunity to have that longevity, we’ll never know. But I am happy that I’ve already got a relationship with my fans, and I’m getting reacquainted with all these kids who have now grown up.”

She’s had plenty of catching up to do with popular music, as well. While she was writing she returned to the music she’d grown up on: The Eagles, George Michael, Glen Campbell, The Carpenters … Tammy Wynette’s Christmas album. So it felt good when she was able to switch back on to the Top 40.

“Around the time that I was listening again, that’s when I first heard Sia, 21 Pilots, all kinds of really wonderful things,” she exclaims. “And there was a gap. I had Rihanna, from like three years prior, but the songs I knew were so outdated by then – it was ridiculous."

She promises that it won’t be another 15 years before she puts out a follow-up to Now.

“I’m already looking forward to my next album, I had a really great experience with this one,” she says.

“After I got started I didn’t want to stop, so there are ones that I can’t wait to get back into the studio with. It’ll never be another 15-year wait. Not if I can help it.”

‘Now’, Shania Twain’s new album, is released on 29 September.

I like brand new songs, but I feel like I miss Mutt touch; and where are the ballads? Soldier? Not enough...

I appreciate raw production, oh yes, and I feel like NOW will be more similar to SHANIA TWAIN than TWIM, COO & (especially) UP!

Anyway, I already know I'm gonna love this album in its entirety, maybe with more time :)

They made great musuc together but people were already complaining about his over produced sound during up and GH era.  Something different and new is what we got and i love it. It is time for people to stop getting stuck in the past . This is a whole new music industry these days from sound and production and saleswise and how songs chart and how sales are counted. Shania is just reintroducing herself with this album to the public. Stop comparing anything to the past. People change,life changes, and we move on.  That is kevy's advice for the day. Now weekend time😁🍷🍸🍺🥂🍻

Eh: Shania Twain, “We Got Something They Don’t”

Shania Twain’s comeback has been eagerly awaited by many, but so far, it’s been a lackluster one; country music’s one-time queen has been releasing song after song that sound exactly like what you’d hear on Lite FM, but somehow more derivative. Her latest continues her lyrical focus of turning a corner after heartbreak, but set against a deep drum beat, it’s an improvement on the tinniness of her first singles (even if the horns seem misplaced and the whole thing smells a bit of a karaoke cover of Bonnie Raitt).

I wonder why she or Vevo themselves would delete it, it was receiving such positive feedback and comments.

Okay, here's my take on the 4 songs released. Let's be honest, the music/music arrangement make or break a song. Not the writing/lyrics. Shania can write the best song in the world but if it doesn't sound good, etc. people are not going to give it the time of day and the song isn't going anywhere. Of the 4 songs released, not one has a "wow factor" musically. All 4 are mediocre at best. None come even close to the hits on Shania's previous albums. They just don't. I know it, you know it, and Shania fans know it (even if they won't admit it). I'm hoping there is one or two great songs on the album. But what I've heard so far, the producers have pretty much screwed Shania.

actually Tommy don't tell us what we know. i disagree with you completely. In fact I would say Soldier is a better song than most of her songs with Mutt. You are entitled to your opinion like everyone but don't tell us what we know because i personally disagree with you on your analysis . HERE is a plan, don't buy the album if you don't like it lol Now i won't be logging on here till after the release so I don't have to read negative stuff.  Even though I think I like these songs a lot more than you, I kind of agree  with what you're saying about the production. Every one of these songs I've been like... "okay.... I wonder why they made this choice here..." it doesn't completely ruin the song for me but definitely distracting.

 I do have to say, that I still like Lifes About To Get Good (first single) much better than I'm Gonna Getcha Good AND Love Gets Me Every Time (other first singles).

Personally, the Come On Over album is still her best album. This is also how I became a crazy Shania fan! But I really don't care whether NOW will be a hit or miss. She is away for a long time and all I want is new music. It's like Shania is reintroducing herself to the world, so this comeback is a testing stage from Shania on how this modern day era will accept her.

Well, one thing's for certain: she was right when she said to forget her past music.

Even if I love the new songs, "Swingin'" and "We Got Something" are iconic to me, I really, really love both of them, there is definitely something "strange" in the production of all the 4 songs released 'til now. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I guess it's something to do with the way they mixed Shania's voice with the backing vocals and the instrumentation, especially during the second half of the songs, when things built up leading to the finale.
It sure is something never heard before on her albums.

Anyway, I find the studio version of IGGG extremely boring, the radio/live one is sooo much better, especially the Chicago DVD and the Up! Tour versions. So for me it would be LGMET, LATGG and then IGGG.

I actually agree with you on this Tommy. Her voice sounds weird on all the new tracks. If you compare it to endless love and today is your day, she sounds like a different person. But I also noticed in recent interviews that she even has trouble speaking, so it might be the dysphonia striking her more and more. The strong autotune is really bothering me on all the new tracks.

The only two tracks I liked from the first listen are Soldier and Home Now. But after getting into the songs I also like LATGG and Swingin' a lot. Of course I still hope the album will become a huge success and that she will suprise us with a big new iconic song. I have my cd and vinyl pre-ordered anyway.

Alright, I'm probably going to have a very unpopular opinion here, so don't shoot me. I personally think, with what I head so far, that I'm going to like this album better than Up!. Don't get me wrong, when Up! came out 15 years ago, I thought it was the world and more. Listening to Up! now just doesn't do much for me compared to when I listen to TWIM or COO. Now, If I'd have to put order to her albums, #1 would be COO, followed by TWIM, then NOW and finish with Up!. But the only reason for the two first is because COO and TWIN are just too iconic to place anywheres else. It will be interesting to see, in another 10 years, where this album will place.

Now, I'm kinda wondering though if it's still possible in this day and age to actually fork out iconic/successful songs/album, to the standard of Shania. Not just for Shania, but any artist in general? We live in such a fast paste world, we are always looking for something fresh and get bored easily. Back during TWIM, COO and Up!, things were so much more simple and slow paste. We didn't have access to music the way that we do now. It was all album sales and radio request back then. Things have changed so much since. I'm just not convinced that anybody is able to achieve that in todays world. Music in general today, is just not as good as it used to be. Maybe I am wrong though?

I agree. Personally I am still waiting that at least one song has this "wow factor". From her last albums you heard a song for the first time and you already liked it straight away. But with the new ones you need time for the songs to grow on you. They are not bad though. But something's is not right about them.

My favourite album used to be Come On Over. Now I relate to TWIM more and it's on rewind every time I do my household chores. I still love COO. And I think Up! is great and too bad the best songs didn't even become singles. I wish she would release I'm Jealous. I know some artists who do some older stuff which weren't singles live on their tours. I wish Shania also performed some of the older non-hit songs but she has so many hits that she is really focused on them.

I really don't like the whole comparing to her old stuff. It is NOT a faire comparison at all. Her old stuff is what put her on the map and TWIM, COO, Up was 15-25 years ago. Things change, people change, sound changes. I'm glad she's not trying to replicate her pass hits. I want new Shania songs to love and listen too. Her GH album is just that. Her greatest hits from that time period. We need to move on, and embrace her new music. I don't know why people seem to be expecting old Shania. If you compare other artist, they don't sound the same as they sounded 5-10 years ago. There is so much more to explore and experience with and I'm glad Shania is taking that step.

Agreed, and to be honest, half of the songs on Come On Over arent that great. I HATE That Don't Impress Me Much/ If You Wanna Touch Her (Ass🤣)/ Black Eye Blue Tears (or whatever the song title is)/When/Don't Be Stupid/ Rock This Country... those aren't stellar songs at all to me. I think we might all be judging NOW a bit prematurely.

 Oh no dear, that's not the problem: I guess (but I talk especially 4 me) that many fans want ALSO old Shania; I love her fresh new soung, even the voice, but I truly, truly, hope that at least 1, just 1, song from the NOW album reconnect my feeling to "oh, that's Shania!".

After 4 songs I listened, maybe just LATGG is the more "Shania-feel"...

Speakin' about Up, that album is a masterpiece in my life, but I recognize little problems in that: wrong production choices and too many songs keeps Up album a bit heavy to listen; I think Up could be much better without She's not just a pretty face, C'est la vie (ABBA cover?) and Waiter! Bring me water!...

About NOW I truly hope to reconnect with COUNTRY music feelings...in that SWMEC only it is, and I hope it will climbin' country charts :)
