New Album "NOW" September 29, singles, interviews, etc. (Part 3)

Tommy wrote:

...“Now” (Mercury Nashville), Ms. Twain’s first studio album since 2002, opened at the top of Billboard’s latest chart by a wide margin, with 134,000 copies sold as a full album and 2.7 million song streams in the United States, according to Nielsen — an extremely low streaming sum for a No. 1 these days, but not unexpected for Ms. Twain’s demographic.

This is what I was talking about. How us fans need to get those low numbers up. I guess the NY TIMES gave us a shoutout or something!!  The Real Slim Shady is going to drop an album the week after Taylor Swift does. So we got Kelly's, hers and his to worry about!

Not looking real good for SWMEC on getting airplay on country radio.

I don't think country radio or any radio for that matter likes to play any artist over the age of 35, unless they're Beyonce (one of the most overrated artists of all time.) I really think Shania really needs to choose wisely when she picks the next single. The next single can either make or break the future of the NOW era, despite the fact that the NOW tour doesn't start until May 2018.

Based on this article, #ShaniaNOW is #1 in Canada, US, UK, Australia and Zimbabwe. Top 5 in Ireland and New Zealand.

I never thought she will be that famous in Zimbabwe.

She is really still the one!

Here it is! Drum roll please

LATGG is #44 Hot Country Songs

LATGG down to #18 on Hot Adult Contemporary (Rod Stewart ft DNCE replaced it)

So she got LATGG on both those charts with a number one album! NOW that is amazing!! We have to get SWMEC on the charts too.

The only reason why LATGG even charted back onto the charts was due to digital downloads, not radio airplay.

NOW era had a great impact last week! OMG!
I think LATGG is fallin' out charts, it had a great momentum and it did soooo well, a true hit 4 a singer comin' back after 15 years!!!
So they need to push SWMEC, now dears!
Are there any stations addin' the song? I can't believe no one plays nothin' from the #1 album of the week! I can't believe!

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Rule Billboard Artist 100, Shania Twain No. 2

By Xander Zellner | Billboard | October 10, 2017

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers re-enter the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Oct. 21) at No. 1 to become the top musical act in the U.S. The late rock icon and his longtime band rule the chart for the second time, following his death Oct. 2.

The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Petty returns to the chart at the summit with a monstrous 10,413 percent surge in overall activity. He and the band previously topped the tally dated Aug. 16, 2014 (five weeks after the chart launched). They had last appeared on the chart on Sept. 6, 2014.

Petty is, sadly, the third act to lead the chart posthumously, following Prince on the May 7 and 14, 2016-dated charts after his death that April 21and David Bowie on the Jan. 30, 2016-dated chart after his death on Jan. 10. Additionally this year, Linkin Park led the Aug. 12-dated list after frontman Chester Bennington's death on July 20.

Album sales account for the majority of Petty's Artist 100 points (54 percent), followed by digital song sales (32 percent), and streaming (11 percent). Petty boasts five albums on the Billboard 200, led by his and the Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits, which re-enters at a new No. 2 peak with 84,000 equivalent album units (up 2,231 percent).

Meanwhile, Shania Twain re-enters the Artist 100 at a new high of No. 2, as the country star earns her second No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with the debut of her new album, Now (137,000 units). (She previously peaked at No. 90 on the Artist 100 in 2015.)

Petty and Twain's returns mark the first time that two artists have re-entered at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously in Artist 100 history. Further, Petty's No. 1 resurgence marks the third consecutive week that an act has re-entered the list at the summit, also a first, as Petty follows Foo Fighters (on the chart dated Oct. 7) and The Killers (Oct. 14).

Rounding out the Artist 100's top five, Imagine Dragons dip 2-3, Demi Lovato leaps 14-4 (nearly matching her No. 3 peak), as her new album Tell Me You Love Me launches at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 (74,000 units), and Ed Sheeran falls 4-5.

Check out this week's full Artist 100 here.

'Now' Is Her Time: Shania Twain No. 1 After 15 Years

By Jim Asker | Billboard | October 10, 2017

Shania Twain’s Now (Mercury/Universal Music Group Nashville), her fifth full-length studio LP and her first in 15 years, flies in at No. 1 on Top Country Albums and the all-genre Billboard 200. It earns 137,000 equivalent album units, with 134,000 in traditional sales, in the week ending Oct. 5, according to Nielsen Music.

Now marks Twain’s second Billboard 200 No. 1. She previously led with her last studio set, when Up! debuted at No. 1 on Dec. 7, 2002, with 874,000 sold in a far more robust sales climate.

Now is the second country album to crown the Billboard 200 in 2017, following Thomas Rhett’s Life Changes (Sept. 30; 123,000 units). Twain is the first female country artist to rule the chart since Miranda Lambert did so with Platinum (June 21, 2014).

Twain first appeared on Top Country Albums in 1993 with her No. 67-peaking self-titled debut album. Now is her fifth No. 1 on the chart among six top 10s. Her previous release, Still the One: Live From Las Vegas, peaked at No. 2 (March 21, 2015). Her previous leaders before Now were The Woman in Me, which spent 29 weeks at No. 1 in 1995-96; Come On Over, which dominated for a record 50 weeks between 1997-2000; Up!, for six weeks, 2002-03; and her Greatest Hits, for 11 weeks, 2004-05. She adds her 97th total week at No. 1, the most among women; Taylor Swift follows with 89. Among all acts, Garth Brooks leads with 171 cumulative weeks atop the chart.

Twain penned all 12 tracks on Now on her own. Its lead single, “Life’s About to Get Good,” hit Nos. 33 and 36 on Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay, respectively.

It may be worth noting that a handful of country stations in Canada and the Eastern US are testing (with some already spinning) "Who's Gonna Be Your Girl." It looks like the plug may have been pulled on "Swingin'." Hopefully if WGBYG officially gets released, it will receive the full treatment.

If Shania releases WGBYG, that's a surefire hit right there! That's honestly one of the best songs on NOW, and probably one of the most played songs from NOW on my playlist.

“Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl” was officially sent to Canadian country radio this morning. It will be the second Canadian single for the album. (“Swingin’” was only officially released in the U.S. and U.K.) Let’s hope we get a Paul Boyd directed video. I want so badly for them to work together on at least one video from this album. It’s a shame too, because WGBYG has the potential to be a hit in all territories.

So WGBYG isn't being released as a single in the U.S.?

I found some instrumentals from the new album here if anyone is interested. Unfortunately, you need an account to listen and download full tracks and unless you work for a publishing group so this is probably useless but at least we know there are some official instrumentals out there.

 Oh really?

I truly don't like these kind of choices, I am always 4 a great promo planned all over the countries...

So, after just 1 month they abbandoned SWMEC? I can see they "only" released it in UK and US, but a music video was filmed and the song need a real promo!

I am a bit confued, I really hope they don't push a song or another with no plan to promote rightfully...

ps: What about SWMEC adds? No news???

In regards to SWMEC: As for now, US Country radio has access to the song, but the label has not given an official add date as to when Billboard reporting stations can add the song to their regular rotation. In the UK, "Swingin'" peaked on the airplay charts at #11, right around the time of her Hyde Park performance. The song is now at #32 on the UK Airplay chart.

I think the whole radio and singles for this album has been rather all over the place. They really need to figure something out, because what on earth is Shania going to sing at the CMAs? She has got to bring a single to country radio. Country radio is much bigger than adult contemporary radio...

Thank you, dear 4 your answer...so, we have now this situation:

1) LATGG is freefallin' outside AC chart, after 10 weeks tryin' to enter the Top10: it hadn't because US people are so strange, they have in rotation the old same 10 songs in 6/7 months (Adele's WaterUTB was released back in november 2016!), so it's a miracle the single peaked #12.

2) SWEMC had a single treatment, with a video release the same day of NOW! But, we know now, only in UK and US! And the label decided to not promote it in radio, at least the country stations? We can expect an AC release now LATGG will come out of that chart in 2 weeks?

3) WGBYG is impactin' on Canada radios: ok, so what? is a single? A local promo single? Is a video in comin' after just 2 weeks from the last one?

And the greatest question of all: WTF they wanna promote on country stations?

Singles can be released to radio at any given time (Mon-Fri). They are released to digital retailers on Friday just like full albums.

probably top 20 with all new releases but during holiday season the album will pick up steam again as Shania is always a favorite seller during holiday season. Around November and December sales will climb again  and also hopefully she releases a radio friendly single.  She is performing at the Cma's in November.

You can tell she is truly proud of this album and we should be too, in fact I know I am. This album is a masterpiece, rather you want to admit it or not. smile

Hi,
I agree this album is cutting edge and very different from anything anybody else is doing and I hope you don't mind me repeating myself but MUTT WHO?!!!
It was Shania who was the genius all along. I always knew this. Mutt did all the flashy production work. It was all her music and songwriting and ideas.
I wish they would do a big contest where fans could win the opportunity to travel with her on the tour as roadies or something!!! I'd do it!!!!!!Dream come true.
I know I like to dream big or go home!!

Warmest regards as always,
Tonto

Hugglez! but all I got to say is this. When you go on a talk show or any show. You get free stuff and the host ask you to pay it forward. So why don't we pick up a few more albums, stream the YouTube videos, Twit in our request or call in our request to the radio to help keep this album possibly at number one. Pink, Kelly, The Real Slim Shady and T. Swift all are releasing albums in the next month before the holiday + Gwen's Holiday album. Now we do have our work cut out. I have been stressing this for almost the past several months. Demi's album was number one in 40 countries while Shania was number one in more than a hand full. Remember we want good strong everlasting memorable headlines. We know she is a global icon and we know she is real. We would like more authenticity, more class, and more fabulousness to happen. Considering the fact by 2020 I can see another album, some more videos and more performances for television. If she gets any nominations for any awards that the country radio cares about then that is a pretty sure sign that the glass ceiling was broken. Remember if she gets inducted into the Country Hall of Fame which she would and we can only hope for that it will be a sign the country radio needs to change for the better.

Shania Twain Was Country’s Crossover Queen. What Is She Now?

Popcast | The New York Times | October 13, 2017

The Popcast is hosted by Jon Caramanica, a pop music critic for The New York Times. It covers the latest in pop music criticism, trends and news.

“Now” is the first album in 15 years from the country music crossover megastar Shania Twain, and this week, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart. Ms. Twain’s return comes at a fraught time for country: female performers have been marginalized, and male performers are increasingly relying on an anodyne stereotype.

In her day, Ms. Twain was both a pop centrist and a country rebel, and many of the aesthetic moves she pioneered ended up, following a period of some resistance, as central to the sound of Nashville. But in contrast to the grand-scaled, often whimsical anthems that dominated her peak years, on her new album she’s made a turn toward the vulnerable.

“My songwriting is my diary and it is my best friend,” she told The New York Times last month. “It’s a place I can go to where it’s not expecting anything from me. There’s just no inhibitions there. It’s a complete free place to say whatever I want to say.”

To discuss Ms. Twain’s legacy and new work on this week’s Popcast, Mr. Caramanica spoke with Jewly Hight, a Nashville-based journalist, critic and regular country music chronicler.

PACRadio who has all info on country radio releases  (they confirmed LATGG back in April, and the album back in April) has said "We Got Something They Don't" is receiving airplay at country radio in the states, in place of "Swingin'" and will replace "Swingin" as the next single in the U.S.. According to other fans, this is the same thing that happened with "Nah!" during the UP! era. ("She's Not Just A Pretty Face" took the place of what was going to be "Nah!")

She does impress us much! Shania Twain on her journey to being the world’s best-selling Country singer

By Bernard Bale | The Sunday Post (Scotland) | October 14, 2017

SHANIA TWAIN is stalking the world stage again and ticket and album sales are proof that her fans are thrilled to see her reclaim her place as the world’s top-selling Country artist.

She’s sold more than 75 million albums and her latest — Now — has soared to the top of the sales charts just like the others.

Her huge 2018 concert tour has already started to sell out some venues and more dates are being begged.

Shania hits the UK in September next year on the crest of a wave but, of course, it was not always like that for this girl from Ontario.

“Yes, I had a tough time as a kid, lots of people do, so I’m not crying about it,” said Shania, who’s 52.

“My mum and dad never had much money, so it was difficult for them and us as a family.

“They often fought, so there was a lot of stress in those early days.

“I was ’way beyond worrying if I was wearing the right, trendy jeans. I was hungry.

“The whole family was hungry and there was a danger that if the authorities found out, they might split us. We did not want that to happen.

“I did everything I could to hide our poverty. I sometimes took mustard sandwiches to school to make it look as if I had a real lunch.

“Anything to keep us together.”

By the time she was eight, Shania was already singing Country music in old people’s homes and all kinds of other venues to bring in a few dollars.

“I learned a lot quickly,” she said.

“It wasn’t just the singing. I was an outdoor girl and quickly picked up how to chop wood without losing a finger as well as how to hunt, and I also learned about logging.

“I liked being outdoors and in remote country. There was nothing better for me than to sit under a tree with my dog and write songs.

“Music became my life. It’s like a drug to me. I spent my teen years high on music and it still has a hold on me which is difficult to explain.

“In those early days, I’d sing just about anywhere for a few dollars, but when I started singing in clubs after midnight, I began to hate it.

“I was singing to drunks and it wasn’t the nicest audience. I sometimes took home $20, which was big money, so it was worth it.

“In a sense, it was quite an education, too, and at least I was singing and enjoying my music.”

Not long after she became a teenager, Shania had a break.

“There was a CBC show called the Tommy Hunter Show,” she recalled.

“I was still at school, of course, but had started singing with a band called Longshot.

“We used to do covers, which is always popular.

“Suddenly, I was in front of a much bigger audience and I loved it.

“I joined another covers band called Flirt and we travelled around Ontario.

“I started singing lessons and did some cleaning to pay for them.

“Then finally someone noticed me and I got a write up in Country Music News, thanks to a guy called Stan Campbell who was a DJ.

“Things started to happen after that.”

They certainly did. Shania became an international star with a massive fan following and it was a real shock when she announced her retirement in 2004.

“I was having trouble singing,” said Shania, who has a 16-year-old son, Eja, from her first marriage.

She is now married to Frederic.

“My voice was weakening and it was discovered that I had lesions on my vocal cords.

“They called it dysphonia, which was probably a result of Lyme disease.

“They said it could be treated, but they could not guarantee that my voice would be as it was.

“I wanted the treatment and to sing again, but there were no guarantees, so retirement seemed the only option.

“You have to learn with things in life. It was terrible when my first marriage fell apart, but I had my son to take care of.

“Fortunately, when you’re a mum, the responsibility of caring for your child can keep you going. I think Eja kept me going through a dark time.

“Later, I met Frederic and things just started to get better and better.

“I love being a mum and a wife. It gives a point to everything and I have had nothing but support from them.”

It took eight years, but then Shania’s voice strengthened again and hope turned into reality.

“It was so good to perform again when I did the season at Caesar’s Palace in 2012, and things just got better because two years later, I went on the road again,” she said.

“I could not describe just how wonderful that was.

“There’s the tour to come and also a movie — Trading Paint — which will be on screen during 2018.

“It was great to make, and to work with someone like John Travolta was a dream come true.

“We shot it in different parts of Alabama and every day was great.

“I went to bed each night looking forward to tomorrow.

“The live shows are what I do best, though, and the big, big tour next year will be all over the States, Canada and here in Britain. I cannot wait.

“There might be Asia, Australia and New Zealand to come, but then I think I would like to go back to Las Vegas for another long residency.

“I love it there. Everyone is so nice just as they are in Britain.

“I have to admit that coming to Britain for the Hyde Park gig was a bit daunting, I didn’t know how I would be received, it has been a while and people grow up so quickly.

“I need not have worried, the audience at Hyde Park was just fantastic, like meeting up with real friends.

“Some of them were asking for selfies while I was on stage — that was such a fun thing to be asked while you are performing at a gig.”

The album, Now, has also performed well.

“I am so glad people like it. I am still a Country singer at heart, but I like to go into other genres, too,” said Shania.

“In many ways, these last few years have been like starting out again as things move on, audiences change, popularity of music genres changes and, of course, technology changes.

“One thing never changes, though — if you have a good song and you perform it well, someone is going to like it and you just hope that enough people like it to make it a success.

“Success is not about money, it is about doing something that has given people pleasure whether you have given them a great night at the show or something to move them in their own homes.”

Shania wrote the songs for the album herself, and in some ways, it reflects her rollercoaster life both on and off the stage.

“I am looking forward to another album to follow this one, but I don’t know if I would write the whole thing myself again,” she admitted.

“It’s a very lonely project. At the time of preparing Now, I quite enjoyed the isolation, I think I needed it. I am used to writing songs on my own, I have done that since I was a little girl. It makes it all much more personal.”

Having stormed Las Vegas for a couple of years, and Hyde Park for one spectacular night, Shania Twain is set to conquer the world in 2018 — all over again!

That Don’t Impress Me Much was one of her biggest of many hits, but who could fail to be impressed by the girl who used to eat mustard sandwiches.

New Album

I find it hard to believe that "We Got Something" would be released to Country radio. It's not Country at all. I hope this is wrong. Soldier or "Whose Gonna Be Your Girl" would be smarter choices.

Can someone please help me understand the logic behind picking a single for country radio? There seems to be no difinitive answer on what is being serviced to country radio. Shania needs country radio just as country radio needs Shania.

Another STUPID choice! WGSTD isn't any better than SWMEC for Country radio. Should've went with "Who's Gonna Be Your Girl" like in Canada.

I was just reading a comment from a radio programmer who said that out of the three (LATGG and SWMEC, WGSTD) and he said WGSTD has the "best hit potential to put Twain back in her elite class at our format."
