Two pop icons battling to land coveted spot on final day of next year’s Glastonbury
Following criticism of an all-male line-up of headliners at this year’s event, organiser Emily Eavis said: 'Certainly, I can say the legend is female'
By Howell Davies | The Sun - UK | December 21, 2023
FEW could follow the likes of DOLLY PARTON, LIONEL RICHIE and KYLIE MINOGUE in Glastonbury’s coveted Legend slot.
But veteran divas Chaka Khan and Shania Twain are each up for the challenge — with both in advanced negotiations to be next year’s act.
A source said: “Talks have been ongoing for months and months with both Chaka and Shania.
“Organisers have left it far later than usual to nail down the festival’s three headliners and that has meant no decision has been made about who to choose for the Legend slot.
“But Chaka and Shania are top of the list, have each said they would be interested and are both keeping the date free. It would be an incredible honour for either of them — and the hits would please everyone.”
American Chaka, who is preparing to celebrate 50 years in music, will play a series of shows in the UK next summer but has nothing planned for the Glasto weekend at the end of June.
Meanwhile, Canadian Shania will start her latest Las Vegas residency in May but has free space in her diary from the end of that month until mid-August, so plenty of time to prepare for a gig at Somerset’s Worthy Farm.
Asked in August if she would be doing the Legend slot, That Don’t Impress Me Much singer Shania told Bizarre: “I’m not aware of it yet but wouldn’t that be awesome? I’m not sure where we’re at with that yet.
“Obviously it would be a dream come true. It’s an incredible honour and I’ve always heard so much about it.
“It’s the thing. It would be extraordinary. I would do it in a heartbeat, so let’s see what happens.”
Following criticism of an all-male line-up of headliners at this year’s event, organiser Emily Eavis said in October: “Certainly, I can say the legend is female.”
But perhaps Cher has thrown a curveball after she claimed this week that she also fancies the Sunday after-noon Legend slot — having previously been deemed too expensive. Asked on Radio 2 if she would do it, she said: “I’d like to.”
Bizarre told this week how Bruce Springsteen is in talks to headline — after Madonna disagreed with bosses over her fee — while Dua Lipa and veteran Glasto headliners Coldplay are also set to top the bill. With those names in the frame, it sounds like a killer line-up.
According to Glastonbury sleuthing account TheGlastoThingy, this is the longest ticketholders have waited since 2007 without any official Glastonbury line-up announcements, with the November ticket scramble seeming like a lifetime ago.
Line up speculation has been rife, with a few Glastonbury-shaped holes in tour dates from artists including Royal Blood, Pearl Jam, Shania Twain, Doja Cat and Girls Aloud – but so far no one has been confirmed straight from the horse’s mouth.
Word online is that the Glastonbury 2024 line-up could be announced on March 1 if the theme of the last two years is anything to go by.
While usually we’d have one or two headliner confirmations at this point in the year, the full line-up isn’t usually announced until March time.
In 2022 and 2023 the line-up was announced on the first Friday of March – and this is historically the most common day of the week for Glastonbury line-up announcements.
When is Glastonbury 2024?
Glastonbury is taking place from Wednesday June 26 – 30, with most of the music on the last three days.
If you haven’t got a ticket, the festival will be broadcasted on the BBC.
Can you still get Glastonbury 2024 tickets?
Unfortunately, tickets are all sold out. But fear not – there is a resale in April of any cancelled or returned tickets, which will give hopefuls their last chance to attend. They cost £360.
Additionally, Eavis hinted once again that there could be two female headliners closing the iconic Pyramid Stage.
“Last week I got a call from a really big American artist saying this person’s around next year,” she explained at the time. “And I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is incredible’. Thank God we held the slot.”
The legends slot at GLASTONBURY 2024 - Another jewel in my crown!! 👑 I feel so honoured and so excited about this one! Thinking about what to wear already 💅 and tell me, what should we sing together?! Let’s make history with this ultimate dream performance!! @glastonbury Has anyone got a tent I can borrow at the end of June?? 👀😂
Whats a Legend's slot verses a headliner slot? Like the difference
The Legends slot is an older artist and can be considered as the "highlight" of the Glastonbury festival. The Legends slot artist always performs on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the festival.
Dua Lipa and Coldplay to headline Glastonbury with Shania Twain in legends slot
By Charlotte McLaughlin and Naomi Clarke | Yahoo! News - UK | March 14, 2024
Shania Twain will play the legends slot at Glastonbury while British singer Dua Lipa, rock band Coldplay and American singer Sza were announced as this year’s headliners.
Canadian singer Twain, known for hits including Man! I Feel Like A Woman!, You’re Still The One and That Don’t Impress Me Much, will perform on Sunday afternoon at the Worthy Farm festival in Somerset – which is being held from June 26 to 30.
The five-time Grammy award-winner has sold more than 100 million records, making her one of the most successful musicians.
Twain told Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show: “I really am so excited. I mean, the best part of it is being able to share it now. It’s just so exciting. It’s been hard to keep it to myself, to be honest. So I’m really glad that this is announced. And I’m just buzzing.
“There’s like a stamp that comes with this slot and I feel like I’m therend e, I’ve arrived at this slot. It’s going to be gorgeous, at sunset time, it is stunning. I’ve watched some of the other performances and I’m already planning what I’m going to wear. You know, all that exciting stuff.”
For 15 years, Twain did not release new music following a bout of Lyme disease that caused her to lose her voice, but then returned from hiatus with the album Now.
In 2018, she underwent open throat surgery after her voice was damaged by the effects of the debilitating illness and this year will also kick off her third Las Vegas residency, being held at the Bakkt Theatre at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in May.
Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis had previously revealed she had booked a major female artist for the slot.
Also taking to the Pyramid Stage will be US rock band LCD Soundsystem, British rapper Little Simz, Nigerian singer Burna Boy, 80s chart-topper singer Cyndi Lauper and British soul star Olivia Dean.
Hidden Figures star and US singer Janelle Monae, Mercury Prize winner Michael Kiwanuka, British singer-songwriter Paul Heaton, UK rock band Keane, British singer Paloma Faith and Nigerian singer Ayra Starr are also among those performing on the main stage.
Before Dua Lipa was announced for the first day of the festival, which marks her Pyramid Stage debut, she revealed her first album in four years would be titled Radical Optimism on Wednesday.
On Instagram, she wrote: “I have dreamt of this moment all my life. Something that lived only in my wildest dreams and highest manifestations!!!
“I am so excited to see you all in my favourite place on earth and make it a night to remember!!”
Her third studio album, which will arrive on May 3, will feature 11 tracks including hit singles Houdini and Training Season, and comes after she won the best pop act award at the Brits earlier this month.
Coldplay will make their first Pyramid Stage appearance since 2016 on the Saturday night, becoming the first act to headline Glastonbury five times.
They move ahead of The Cure, who have taken a headline slot four times.
The Sunday night headliner is Grammy and Brit winner Sza, real name Solana Imani Rowe, known for the songs Snooze and Ghost In The Machine featuring Phoebe Bridgers.
On the Other Stage are US rock band The National, Canadian singer Avril Lavigne, former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello, Brit Rising Star winners The Last Dinner Party, singer-songwriter Anne-Marie, Dry Your Eyes singer The Streets and Northern Ireland band Two Door Cinema Club.
On Instagram, Eavis wrote: “I’m so happy to be able to bring you the first shortlist of artists for Glastonbury 2024.
“There is even more to come over the coming weeks, when we will be bringing you the full line ups for each area.”
Jungle and drum and bass musician Nia Archives, Brazil singer Declan McKenna, K-pop stars Seventeen, indie pop band London Grammar and Irish rock band Fontaines DC are also among the acts for the festival.
I know you love horses – Shania Twain mulls over taking animals to Glastonbury
By Charlotte McLaughlin and Naomi Clarke | Yahoo! News - UK | March 14, 2024
Shania Twain is mulling over taking horses with her on stage at Glastonbury when the country pop star plays the coveted Sunday afternoon legends slot.
The Canadian singer, known for hits including Man! I Feel Like A Woman! and That Don’t Impress Me Much, was announced as among the performers for the Worthy Farm festival in Somerset.
She will follow in the footsteps of fellow major artists such as Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Diana Ross, Kylie Minogue and Dame Shirley Bassey who have all filled the prestigious slot.
Twain, 58, told BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show: “Honestly, I feel like it’s well, I don’t know if this is the right language, but it feels like an accolade of sorts because it really feels like something that you have to earn. It’s just very rewarding, it’s a really beautiful feeling.”
She added that “so many of my heroes” including Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton have performed in the Sunday afternoon slot.
When asked if she would have horses on stage, similar to her Las Vegas residency, Twain said: “Oh god, wouldn’t that be … OK, who can pull those strings for me?
“You’ve just put something in my mind. I know that you guys love your horses, this could, you know, I wonder, hmmm, let me think about this.
“Maybe I could show up on a carriage, you know, a team of horses or something. I’m sure that could be arranged.”
She told the same radio station in 2017 that bringing horses on stage helped her when she was having difficulties with her voice.
“I do this liberty work with the horse … I do You’re Still The One with it and it’s like this psychological distraction,” Twain said.
She did not release an album for 15 years following a bout of Lyme disease that caused her to lose her singing voice.
In 2018, she underwent open-throat surgery to repair damage done by the debilitating illness.
She returned from her hiatus with Now, which shot straight to number one on both sides of the Atlantic, and followed it up last year with the joyous and equally successful record Queen Of Me.
Twain also told Radio 2 that her Glastonbury show will be “an energy exchange”.
“It’s (going to) be all the hits first of all, so I expect us to all be singing, word for word the whole time through, so it’ll be high energy,” she added.
“That sunset glow party energy with all the hits.”
She also revealed that she had not yet told Richie, who she described as a “mentor” and played the same Legends slot in 2015.
Twain also said: “Oh my god, honestly this is, would never have even entered my mind that I would ever even make it across the border from Canada to go anywhere, so it was always my dream, honestly, to go around the world, but, yeah, I can’t believe it, I’m actually going to Glastonbury, I’m really, it’s happening, it’s happening guys.”
The five-time Grammy-award winner has sold more than 100 million records in her career, making her one of the most successful musicians ever.
Her 1993 debut, self-titled studio album was well received by critics but it was her 1995 follow-up, The Woman In Me, that shot her to fame.
The diamond-certified record went to number one in the US country chart and she furthered her success with 1997’s Come On Over, which featured singles including You’re Still The One and That Don’t Impress Me Much.
It earned her four Grammy Awards and remains the biggest-selling studio album of all time by a solo female artist, propelling her career to stratospheric heights when she was in her early thirties.
Her fourth album Up!, which included hits I’m Gonna Getcha Good! and Ka-Ching!, was also a commercial success following its release in 2002.
The singer will kick off her third Las Vegas residency being held at the Bakkt Theatre at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in May.
Glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis had previously revealed she booked a major female artist for the legends slot.
Last year, folk singer-songwriter Yusuf took festival-goers on a melodic journey through the ages when he performed during the legends slot, playing classic tracks from his back catalogue along with songs from his latest 17th studio album.
How long will the performance be? There's a lot of people complaining saying she should be a headliner and that the legends slot is an insult to her legacy. I'm not sure what to think

Who says that? Lol How stupid of them. Dolly Parton and Lionel Richie did it in the recent past. It is actually the most coveted spot. Time to get off line and don't listen to clowns. Also Kyle Minogue legends appearance was the most watched part of that festivals history. Legends slot is for icons. Don't understand an idiot mentality that would say it ruins her legacy lol. If anything it shows she is one of the greatest legends in music and made her mark.
This is really GREAT! The rumor was out there for weeks but now is true.
Let's hope they can fix the "Queen of Me Tour" technical issues for all those Summer shows she will play.
Glastonbury Announces 2024 Ticket Resale Date – But It Will Be ‘Limited’
Organisers have warned there will be fewer tickets up for grabs than previous years.
By Hollie Geraghty | Huffington Post - UK | April 9, 2024
Glastonbury 2024 hopefuls can put a ring around the calendar, because this year’s re-sale date has finally been announced.
Organiser Emily Eavis announced yesterday that this year the “highest percentage of ticket balances” ever had been paid up, meaning the 2024 resale will be “very limited”.
The annual resale comprises tickets for which the balance was not paid before the cut off date, giving music fans the chance to land some much coveted tickets for the 2024 bash, which takes place from 26-30 June at Worthy Farm in Pilton.
This year, the resales will take place on Thursday, 18 April (Ticket + Coach travel options) at 6pm BST, and Sunday, 21 April (General Admission tickets) at 9am BST.
Any cancelled accommodation options (Worthy View, Sticklinch, Campervan/Caravan passes) will then be made available on Sunday, 21 April at 11am BST.
The resale will only be available at this link, and you can find more information here.
Shania Twain says she’s bringing her wellies for Glastonbury 2024
Queen of country-pop will play the Pyramid Stage in June
By Roisin O'Connor | The Independent | May 22, 2024
Shania Twain says she’s packed her wellies for Glastonbury Festival this summer, as she prepares to take to the Pyramid Stage for the coveted Legends Slot.
The Canadian country-pop legend, 58, will perform some of her biggest hits when she makes her debut at Worthy Farm in June, alongside headliners Coldplay, Dua Lipa and SZA.
“I am getting into the spirit of the whole experience. I will be bringing rubber boots – wellies, as you call them here,” she told host Elizabeth Day on her How to Fail podcast.
“I want to go to other stages and I’ve heard that you should be prepared for the mud. I will probably wear a cowboy hat if it’s raining if going around the stages, so I can keep myself from looking like a wet rat.”
She added: “I haven’t worked out what I’m wearing yet but I will figure it out.”
In the same interview, the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” star spoke about how she tries not to berate herself if she mixes up her lyrics: “I don’t beat myself up too much when it comes to that failure. It’s challenging to remember that many lyrics.
“But when people are singing along with me and they get the words wrong, it throws me right off. Even when they stop singing, sometimes I lose where I am.”
She also offered an emotional response when asked about her “biggest failure”, which she felt was wishing that her late mother could be at every one of her shows.
“They say not to wish for things you can’t change. But you have triggers like an award show,” she said.
“My mum was there for all of the beginning and none of the success. It’s regrettable in the deepest way that she never got to witness anything.”
Twain, who rose to global fame in the late Nineties and Noughties with albums such as Come On Over and Up!, was announced as one of the artists on this year’s Glastonbury lineup in March.
“The legends slot at GLASTONBURY 2024... Another jewel in my crown!!” she wrote on Instagram after the news broke. “I feel so honoured and so excited about this one! Thinking about what to wear already... and tell me, what should we sing together?!
“Let’s make history this summer with this ultimate dream performance!”
Twain’s Glastonbury booking comes after the release last year of her sixth studio album, Queen of Me. Among the previous artists to have played the Legends Slot on Sunday at Glastonbury are Diana Ross, Barry Gibb, Kylie Minogue and Lionel Richie.
She is also headlining British Summer Time festival in London on Sunday 7 July, along with fellow stars such as Stevie Nicks, Robbie Williams, SZA, rock band Kings of Leon, K-Pop band Stray Kids, and Australian pop icon Minogue, who will perform on dates across June and July.
This year’s Glastonbury Festival takes place between 26 to 30 June.
Other artists on the lineup include soul-pop artist Michael Kiwanuka, pop-punk singer Avril Lavigne, bands Keane, LCD Soundsystem, Two Door Cinema Club, Fat White Family and Bombay Bicycle Club, rapper Little Simz, and singers Camila Cabello, Janelle Monae, Jessie Ware and Olivia Dean.
How to watch Glastonbury live stream 2024 — TV channels, headliners, dates
Watch Glastonbury 2024 with Dua Lipa, Coldplay, SZA and Shania Twain
By Adam Marshall | What Hi-Fi? | June 1, 2024
With the countdown to the 2024 Glastonbury Festival now showing less than a month to go, the headliners have been announced and all that remains to be seen is who will turn up for secret gigs and how the weather forecast will pan out.
That's all well and good if you were among the 200,000 people who managed to get a ticket this year (and made your wallets £360 lighter), but if you're in the huge number that missed out then you can still take in the festival vibes and all that live music. Just follow our guide to watch free Glastonbury 2024 live streams and from wherever you are in the world.
Dua Lipa, Coldplay, SZA and Shania Twain. The four names at the top of the 2024 Glastonbury Festival poster tell a story of how father-daughter organisers Michael and Emily Eavis have made history. With three out of the four female, it's a direct response to the anger and dismay at the all-male line-up last year.
Dua Lipa gets her turn on the Pyramid Stage first on Friday night, following LCD Soundsystem and double Mercury Prize winner PJ Harvey. The singer-cum-model-cum-actress-cum-podcaster is riding high after an appearance in film Argylle and release of her third studio album Radical Optimism.
Glasto veterans Coldplay top the bill on Saturday. Chris Martin and his band really made their name at the festival back in 2000, with a memorable performance of their first major hit Yellow. And they haven't looked back – this will be their record-breaking fifth headline appearance on the Pyramid.
If you haven't heard of SZA, then you soon will. The American artist combines elements of soul, R&B and hip hop to create a sound that has earned her two Platinum-selling albums and four Grammy Awards over a decade-long career. She'll have the benefit of a crowd whipped into a frenzy by the singalong country stylings of Shania Twain.
Don't impress you much? Well, with an estimated 3,000 plus acts, there truly is something for everybody at Glastonbury Festival. This year they include Little Simz, Janelle Monae, Keane, Paloma Faith, Cyndi Lauper, Idles, Justice, The National, Disclosure, Avril Lavigne, Faithless and many, many more.
As ever, the BBC is going all out on its Glastonbury coverage. Last year it showed music live and on-demand for more than 90 acts across in excess of 40 hours. It will all be available in 4K UHD, and – unlike the folk at Worthy Farm – you get a comfortable bed, hot shower and no queues for the loos to contend with.
One of the world's biggest music and arts festivals is just around the corner. So read on for all the information on how to watch Glastonbury 2024 from anywhere in the world.

Shania Twain teases Glastonbury show saying there will be no costume changes
Alloa & Hillfoots Advertiser - UK | June 22, 2024
Shania Twain has teased how her Glastonbury slot will unfold ahead of her legends afternoon show.
The Canadian singer, known for hits including Man! I Feel Like A Woman! and That Don’t Impress Me Much, will perform next Sunday at the Worthy Farm festival in Somerset.
Other artists including Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Diana Ross, Kylie Minogue and Dame Shirley Bassey have all filled the coveted slot on the Pyramid Stage.
Shania Twain with Vernon Kay (BBC Radio 2)
Twain, 58, told Vernon Kay’s Tracks Of My Years on BBC Radio 2: “It’s a wow moment, it’s the big topic of conversation and has been now for all this whole lead time up to this moment with all of us.
“I’ve come to realise that it’s more than a concert, it’s more than the Pyramid Stage, it’s more than the slot, it’s an event, it’s a cultural event, it’s an annual stamp (and is a place that) hugely committed fans go to every year regardless of who the talent is.”
She added that it is a “bonding” event, and replied “no”, when asked about costume changes.
When asked why, she told Kay that it is “not Vegas”, a nod to her previous residencies in Las Vegas, which featured horses on stage.
Twain added that Glastonbury is “very, very different” and said “it’s all about hit songs”.
The singer has struggled with her voice in recent years following a bout of Lyme disease and did not release an album for 15 years until the record Now.
In 2018, she underwent open-throat surgery to repair damage done by the debilitating illness, and last year put out the record Queen Of Me.
While speaking about touring, Twain said she does not “love the travel”, and is not someone who is “partying on the bus”.
She also said: “After my recovery with my voice… something really, really changed and I thought, people, they’re the only reason I’m actually still doing this (music) live.
Shania Twain on Tracks Of My Years (BBC Radio 2)
“Yeah, so, you know, there’s a definite appreciation that I have that is new and refreshed and, the audience is new and refreshed.
“I mean, a lot of these kids… they used to come when they were three, four or five with their parents, now they’re 23, 24, 25. (You are) watching the generations reconnect.”
Twain’s third Las Vegas residency began in May at the Bakkt Theatre at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino and she will return to that stage following shows in the UK including at BST Hyde Park in London.

Shania Twain on Glastonbury set: 'I plan on singing everything that everybody knows'
Music News - UK | June 24, 2024
Ken Bruce with Shania Twain
Ahead of her performing in the Glastonbury Legends slot this weekend, Shania Twain sat down with another legend, Ken Bruce for a chat about what festival-goers can expect this Sunday.
In an intimate chat that is exclusively available now on new audio app Rayo before being broadcast on Greatest Hits Radio (4pm on Saturday 29th June) Shania shared some Glastonbury set secrets, reminisced about her first ever performance and explained why the UK feels like home...
On getting that Glastonbury call: ‘It's a wow. A real wow moment in my career. It's such a one of a kind. The closer it comes, the more everybody tells me about it in their own individual stories as well their own experiences. Everyone seems to be such a dedicated fan of the festival, it sounds as though it's a very bonding experience for everybody. It's an event where everybody bonds over whether it's great weather or bad weather or whatever it is that's happening so I think it's more than just a music festival, it's a community gathering, a stamp, an annual stamp that everyone experiences.’
On whether she’s ready for the rain: ‘I absolutely am! I decided I would wear a cowboy hat, though in case it does rain. I prefer a cowboy hat to, like, a rain hat – so much more stylish than a plastic hat!’
On her set list: ‘I plan on singing everything that everybody knows so there's no guessing. It's just all about the hits. It's all about singing together and having fun. It's all about the shoulder-to-shoulder experience, isn't it? Everybody wants to just sing along and sway along. They want to feel and I want it to feel familiar to everyone. And this is what I love about the time of the Legends slot because in it's still daytime and I can see everybody. I'll be able to see all the way to the back. I'll be able to see the scope, the view because I see the audience as a unit. I really feel like it’s an environment and all the energy is individual. And I love the people watching. I love to watch people.’
On feeling at home in the UK: ‘Well, that's it. I always feel at home when I'm here. Yeah, I really do. A sense of humour and there's a charm here that makes me feel at home. There's always a quaint corner somewhere or street that you can walk down. And there's just a lot about the atmosphere that makes me feel comfortable.'
On her first ever performance: ‘Okay, maybe this doesn't qualify for my first performance, but it was still a first performance. I remember my mother used to put me up on the countertops in restaurants because I would always sing out loud with a jukebox from the seat from our table. People would take notice so she decided to put me on top of the table and let me sing so people could see me.’
