Miami Dolphins getting to know Tua Tagovailoa

By Mark Inabinett | al.com | June 18, 2020

Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores said earlier this month that the coaching staff was eager to work with the NFL team’s rookies, particularly first-round draft pick Tua Tagovailoa.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Dolphins’ facility in Davie, Florida, was off-limits to the team’s coaches and most of the players as Miami conducted its offseason program online.

“Specific to Tua, he’s working hard,” Flores said on June 4. “He’s picking up the information. But you want to get your hands on him, quite honestly.”

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Tagovailoa arrived for work at the Dolphins’ headquarters on Monday after relocating from Alabama, giving team personnel their first chance to evaluate first-hand his progress from a hip injury since Miami selected the Crimson Tide quarterback with the fifth choice in the NFL Draft on April 23.

Tagovailoa’s career at Alabama ended when he sustained a broken hip on Nov. 16 against Mississippi State. That didn’t dissuade the Dolphins from drafting the QB despite the lack of access because of the NFL’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Those restrictions are being scaled back. Coaches and other personnel can return to the Dolphins’ facilities, although capacity at the headquarters is limited. Players still are not allowed to return, except for those undergoing rehabilitation and treatment after injuries.

Tagovailoa had been rehabbing with Champion Sports Medicine in Birmingham and will continue his comeback with the Dolphins’ training and medical staff.

The Dolphins also released a short question-and-answer video with Tagovailoa to help their fans get to know the team’s new quarterback. Tagovailoa gave perhaps a surprising answer (for a native of Hawaii) to a pineapple-on-pizza question, asked Shania Twain to message him and told his “best joke.”

TMZ | June 22, 2020

Dolphins top draft pick Tua Tagovailoa is quickly learning the perks of being an NFL superstar -- 'cause the QB just got noticed by his celebrity crush, Shania Twain!!!

The rookie was doing a rapid-fire Q&A with the team when he was asked a bunch of questions ... and Tua made sure to mention he LOVES Shania's music, calling it his "guilty pleasure."

But, the 22-year-old's obsession goes far beyond Twain's hits -- he revealed the country singer is his celebrity crush ... and even asked for a personal shoutout.

"Shania, if you watch this ... from this moment on, please message me back!!" Tua said

Thanks to the powers of social media, 54-year-old Twain caught wind of Tua's big crush ... and hit him back with a flirty tweet!!

"Guilty pleasure?! You should be proud of your good taste @Tua" ... while adding a kiss emoji.

A KISS EMOJI!!!

Tua -- who has proven what he can do under pressure -- hit Shania back with the perfect response by referencing one of her songs ... saying, "'You’re still the one' @ShaniaTwain."

We ship Tua and Shania ... or should we say, "Shua?"

Great Outfits in Fashion History: Shania Twain, Queen of Leopard Print

This look was the perfect blend of '90s-chic and country.

By Dhani Mau | Fasionista | June 25, 2020

Shania Twain at the 1999 Academy of Country Music Awards
Shania Twain at the 1999 Academy of Country Music Awards

There was nothing that late-'90s Dhani loved more than Shania Twain, and there was nothing late-'90s Shania Twain loved more than leopard print. I suppose I can't say the latter with absolute certainty, but I do think she broke the world record for most leopard print worn at one time when she filmed the 1998 video for "That Don't Impress me Much," featuring a floor-length, hooded robe, long gloves, a crop top, pants, boots and a circular suitcase in the animal-inspired pattern. And that was certainly not the first or the last time she sported leopard.

The Canadian singer echoed that iconic video look at the 1999 Academy of Country Music Awards. The comparatively toned-down outfit features only one leopard-print piece, albeit another floor-length, long-sleeve velvet duster, layered over what appears to be a black velvet strapless dress. Style with a bolo tie-choker hybrid and subtly teased hair, this look is the perfect blend of '90s-chic and country. It makes a statement without being gaudy, and it's just classic Shania.

If you're suddenly feeling inspired to incorporate a little more leopard into your wardrobe, check out the gallery below.

Rooted in Country: Tenille Townes on Shania Twain's 'Fearless' Spirit [Interview]

By Bobbie Jean Sawyer | Wide Open Country | September 8, 2020

Singer-songwriter and ACM New Female Artist of the Year Tenille Townes is one of the fasting rising stars in country music. The "Somebody's Daughter" singer has shared the stage with Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town and more. But even before she was embarking on international tours, racking up CMA and ACM nominations and earning accolades for her album The Lemonade Stand, Townes was performing with country music superstars.

When she was nine years old, Townes' parents surprised her with tickets to see her musical hero Shania Twain.  Townes brought a sign and her mom made her a special outfit to honor Twain. Towards the end of the concert, Twain spotted Townes in the crowd and brought her onstage to sing.

Townes says the experience had a profound experience on her and she recently got the chance to share her gratitude with the artist.

"That was such a crazy moment -- being nine years old and standing next to my hero," Townes tells Wide Open Country. "It just lit a fire in me that I still feel. I recently was at a Billboard music event. [Shania] was presenting an award to someone and I was like 'I'm standing in the room as Shania Twain and I didn't even have to sneak in. [Laughs] I'm supposed to be here. This is crazy'....I got introduced to her by my friend Katie afterward and thank goodness she was able to tell most of the story because I just couldn't really string words together. I think I mustered a 'thank you' and showed her one of the pictures that I have...That was a very special moment to be around her again."

Townes says Twain showed her the value of following your own path.

"I think it was seeing her singing up there, you know, just being fearless," Townes says. "I watched her Miami concert DVD over and over and over and she looked like she was having the time of her life. She just had this fierceness about her. You could tell she just paved her own path. She was so different musically and what she was singing about was wildly independent and cool. It definitely drew me to go, 'Wow, if she could do that maybe I can too.'"

In addition to her ACM New Artist of the Year win, Townes is also nominated for Vocal Event of the Year for "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" with Miranda Lambert, Maren MorrisAshley McBryde, Elle King and Caylee Hammack. (The recording is also nominated for a CMA award for Musical Event of the Year.)

"That really was such a dream," Townes says of the collaboration. "Miranda Lambert is an incredible human and leader and champion of all of us and to be invited to be a part of that tour was truly such a cool thing," Townes says. "She wanted to do a song kind of celebrating the tour and all the music that was a part of it. It was so fascinating to hear everyone's different styles shining through on that song. All of those voices have something important to say and something different to say and, stylistically, they're just all so cool.

Every Tuesday at 1:30PM, Katie Neal will spotlight up-and-comers and forever favorites from the women of Country music, back to back on your favorite RADIO.COM Country station.

Tune in each week as we feature music new and old from the pillars and rising stars of the genre.

Featured on Back To Back with Katie Neal this Week:

Miranda Lambert – Settlin’ Down

After celebrating her number one song "Bluebird," ACM and CMA award winning Miranda Lambert is back with her next single off her 2019 album Wildcard. "Settlin’ Down" is the perfect description of being stuck in between settlin’ up and settlin’ down.

Shania Twain - Any Man of Mine

You can't think of '90s Country music without thinking of genre pillar, Shania Twain. A five-time GRAMMY winner, Shania paved the way and influenced many of today's female artists. Recently, Shania celebrated the 25th "birthday" of her very first number one song, “Any Man of Mine.”

Tenille Arts - Somebody Like That

If Tenille looks like a familiar face, it's probably because you've seen her not once, not twice, but three times performing on ABC's The Bachelor. Tenille Arts is a Canadian native and just released her debut album Love, Heartbreak and Everything in Between in January.

Beat that… Shania Twain’s tune Still The One to set pulses racing

By Andrei Harmsworth | Metro - UK | January 11, 2021

SHANIA TWAIN’S hit You’re Still the One is the love song that makes our hearts flutter the most, a study suggests.

Researchers hooked music lovers up to heart monitors and played a series of ballads to gauge the reaction.

And the Grammy-winning country star’s 1998 hit came out on top.

The listeners’ resting heart rate was on average 62 beats-per-minute (bpm), but soared to 72bpm — a rise of 16 per cent — when they heard Twain’s tune.

It finished just ahead of Phil Collins’ 1984 hit Against All Odds, which sent heart rates rocketing to 71.6bpm.

Next was Heaven, a hit in 1985 for Bryan Adams, followed by Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On — the soundtrack to 1997 movie blockbuster Titanic.

Bryan Adams’s (Everything I Do) I Do it for You, which topped the charts for 16 weeks in 1991, was in fifth place.

A spokesman for greetings card retailer thortful.com, which commissioned the study, said: ‘Using heart rate tracking equipment, we discovered how 20 listeners’ heart rates reacted when they were played top love songs.

SONGS FROM THE HEART

1. You’re Still the One Shania Twain — 72bpm
2. Against All Odds Phil Collins — 71.6bpm
3. Heaven Bryan Adams — 71.4bpm
4. My Heart Will Go On Celine Dion — 71.2bpm
5. (Everything I Do) I Do it for You, Bryan Adams — 70.8bpm
6. Total Eclipse of the Heart, Bonnie Tyler — 70.6bpm
7. No One Alicia Keys — 70.6bpm
8. How Deep is Your Love Bee Gees — 70.6bpm
9. The Lady in Red Chris de Burgh — 70.5bpm
10. It’s You Ali Gatie — 70.3bpm

15 of the most iconic female country stars of all time, from Dolly Parton to Kacey Musgraves

By Frank Olito | Yahoo News | January 16, 2021

  • Despite being a male-dominated genre, country music has seen plenty of female superstars.
  • Musicians like Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, and Loretta Lynn all paved the way for future female singers.

  • Shania Twain, Miranda Lambert, and Faith Hill have found mainstream success as country music stars.

Although country music is diversifying, the genre has long been considered a boys' club. Even so, female singers have broken through to climb the charts and to challenge the male-dominated genre.

As they made a name for themselves, icons like Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and Loretta Lynn all paved the way for future female country music stars.

From the 1930s to today, here are the most iconic female country music stars of all time.

Shania Twain produced one of the best-selling country albums of all time.

shania twain

When Shania Twain's parents died in a car accident in 1987, Twain took a job singing at a resort in Ontario, Canada, to support her younger siblings. At the same time, she continued to work on her original music until she was signed to her first record deal. She released her first album in 1993, which performed poorly. Her second album, "The Woman in Me," climbed the country charts with songs like "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" and "Any Man of Mine." At the time, she received four Grammy nominations and won one for the Best Country Album.

Twain's biggest success was her third album, "Come on Over," which was released in 1997. The album stayed at the top of the country charts for 50 weeks and became the top-selling country album in history.

Throughout her career, Twain has had seven No. 1 hits and has received five Grammy awards.

We're Celebrating Women’s History Month! From the ladies who paved the way to the women who make country music what it is today. Today we honor @ShaniaTwain

https://twitter.com/TheNew93Q/status/1366765253598601217

Celebrating Women’s History Month: Shania Twain

The New 93Q - Houston's Country

Emerging in the mid-’90s, Shania Twain became the most popular country music artist since Garth Brooks. Skillfully fusing mainstream, AOR rock production with country-pop, Twain and her producer/husband, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, created a commercial juggernaut with her second album, The Woman in Me. The record became a multi-platinum phenomenon, peaking at number five on the pop charts and eventually selling over nine million copies in America alone. Twain might have sold a lot of records, but like other mega-selling acts before her, she earned few good reviews -- most critics accused her of diluting country with bland, anthemic hard rock techniques and shamelessly selling her records with sexy videos. Fans ignored such complaints, mainly because her audience was comprised of many listeners who had grown accustomed to such marketing strategies by constant exposure to MTV. And Twain, in many ways, was the first country artist to fully exploit MTV’s style. She created a sexy, video-oriented image -- she didn’t even tour during the year when The Woman in Me was on the top of the country charts -- that appealed not only to the country audience, but also to pop fans. In turn, she became a country music phenomenon.

Phil Collins' Ex Selling Item Purportedly Signed By Shania Twain

By John R. Kennedy | iHeartRadio Canada | March 3, 2021

The ex-wife of Phil Collins is auctioning a pair of portable speakers with cases purportedly autographed by Collins and Canadian superstar Shania Twain.

The white Pinel et Pinel cases and Yamaha Portable Player Docks are among the items Orianne Cevey is selling in an online auction on Wednesday.

Described as in “good used condition,” one of the cases has several “Shania” scribbles on the left side and “Twain” scribbles on the right side with a smiley-face heart in the middle.

No information is provided about when Twain supposedly personalized the case. (The description of the auction lot misspells Twain's first name as "Shanaia.")

The signatures are slightly different than a sample of Twain’s autograph at PSA Authentication & Grading Services.

The second case in the lot is purportedly signed by Collins, who also drew a cartoon drummer. The year “2010” appears.

Auction company Kodner estimates the two items will fetch between $200 and $500 U.S.

(According to Yamaha, the PDX-30 was discontinued. Various sellers online are offering the docks for between $50 and $65 CAD.)

Last month, Cevey auctioned a collection of personal items, including Gold certifications presented to Collins by the Canadian Recording Industry Association and WEA Music of Canada in the early ‘80s.

Cevey and Collins were married from 1999 to 2006 but reunited a decade later. They split up last August when Collins learned she married another man. Collins and Cevey have been embroiled in a nasty legal battle ever since.

Last year, Collins went to court to evict Cevey and her husband from his Miami Beach mansion, which was once home to Jennifer Lopez. Collins recently sold the property for a reported $40 million U.S.

In an interview with his record label, Sony Music Nashville, the “Be Like That” singer shared the female who has influenced him most.

Brown revealed that Shania is the female who influenced him the most throughout his life, as his mother Tabatha, is a huge fan of Twain, so Brown grew up listening to her music.

Lady A Deliver Strong Message Of Female Independence On ‘Like A Lady’

The song is a preview of what will be the country trio’s first album under the name Lady A.

By Paul Sexton | uDiscover Music | March 12, 2021

Lady A have today (12) shared their new single for Big Machine Label Group, “Like A Lady.” It arrives, appropriately, in the week of International Women’s Day 2021 and during Women’s History Month.

The feelgood message of female independence is a preview of what will be the country trio’s first album under the name Lady A. It’s the culmination of a full year of songwriting and will be the follow-to to Ocean, which hit No.2 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart following its release in November 2019.

Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood announced the new song in a social media post last week, along with a short audio preview. Scott co-wrote it with Dave Barnes, Michelle Buzz, Martin Johnson, and Brandon Paddock, and it was produced by Dann Huff. Hillary leads the band with vocal abandon, celebrating those “who’ve spent the last year learning to live it up in loungewear.”

“I feel my most confident when I’m not trying too hard,” says Scott. “I love getting glammed up and all the fancy clothes, but when I feel the most ‘me,’ it’s a lot more laid back – and I think that’s a lot of us. You are your most authentic self in blue jeans with a tequila drink, ya know?

“As we were writing it, I was like ‘It’s always been my dream to do a song that combines the things I love about Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ and Shania Twain’s ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman!’ – two of the most strong, powerful female songs ever,” she goes on. “So it was like ‘How can we do our version of that?’”

“It’s incredible that Charles and Dave, in all their masculinity, are willing to sing right alongside me on this song,” Scott goes on. “I think that is another powerful statement. It’s super important for strong, great men to stand beside women and propel them forward. I hope it makes fans feel confident too, it brings them joy and just gets people excited about seeing live music again.”

Notes Haywood: “We were some of the biggest champions for ‘Like A Lady’ and we’re honored to stand alongside Hillary. We’ve had a front row seat to her strength over the years and we love linking arms with her on this song.” Adds Kelley: “This song has such a great feel to it,” Charles Kelley adds. “One of the coolest parts of being in a co-ed band is being able to share those different perspectives, so that’s just part of what we get to do.”

Scott is featured as one of 31 groundbreaking women in the Dress For Success campaign Your Hour, Her Power. It highlights the role of female leaders in diverse industries as part of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.

The campaign is launching in partnership with O, The Oprah Magazine, inspired by the belief that when a woman has access to opportunities that can change her life for the better, she becomes powerful beyond measure. Individuals are encouraged to donate the equivalent of one hour of pay to help women gain access to Dress for Success’ programs, services, and tools.

Regarding the Leading Ladies who have made a difference in her life, Danielle says she can name more than one, but the female who comes to mind first is "powerhouse woman" Carrie Underwood. But, "it flip-flops," she admits. "Right now, I'm super into Shania Twain and just how she was -- and still is. She's still killing it. But back then, she paved her own way and I feel paving your own way is such a big topic right now, especially for women."

"I have so much respect for her... and I feel like I'm not the only one. She's Shania Twain," Danielle laughs. "Lately, she's been a name and a woman that's been a little brighter with my music, paving my path, and all of that... it's been such an inspiration to look up her stuff."

Speaking from experience, Danielle offers up some advice for singers looking to make it in the industry: "Be truly, and stand for truly who you are as a person. Because I started this so young... even now I'm like, 'who am I, really?' You're still developing, and I feel like we never stop, no matter what age you are. You're still growing and you learn things every single day."

"In the beginning, I didn't really know who Danielle Bradbery was, I'm still finding that out," she adds. "But staying true to who you are is so important. There are bigger voices that'll try to lead you astray and to somebody that you don't like. So stay true to who you are... run with it and have fun."

Watch Rob + Holly's full interview with Danielle Bradbery above and follow along as we spotlight the Leading Ladies of Country across your favorite RADIO.COM Country stations throughout the entire month of March!

Rooted in Country: Callie Twisselman on Shania Twain's 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman'

By Bobbie Jean Sawyer | Wide Open Country | July 10, 2021

https://cdn0.wideopencountry.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Untitled-design-470-793x526.png

Growing up on a seventh-generation cattle ranch in California, Callie Twisselman certainly lived the life depected in many country songs. She got up before dawn to feed cattle, clean out stalls and practice calf roping and riding horses to compete in local rodeos.

But Twisselman says it was Shania Twain's bold and stylistic "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" that sent a lasting message to the heart of a rancher's daughter: Country music was her path and she was going to do it her own way.

"My favorite country song that helped shape and inspire me at an early age was Shania Twain's 'Man, I Feel Like A Woman.' I remember watching the music video and being so amazed by the artistry and fashion sense Shania brought to her music," Twisselman tells Wide Open Country. "I think I grew a love for fashion because I lived in the middle of nowhere on my family's ranch and never really got to dress up much. So seeing her combine that with her music was a dream to me."

Twisselman just released her new EP Closure, featuring the breezy love song "Two Hands."

For more information on Callie Twisselman, visit her official website.

Callie Twisselman Talks Debut 'Closure' EP, Shania Twain & More

By Taylor Fields | iHeartRadio | July 23, 2021

A big influence of yours is Shania Twain. What is it about her that grabbed you as a kid watching her “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” music video that made you want to pursue country music?

"Shania Twain was such a huge influence of mine. I'd say what drew me to her the most after watching that music video, was not only did she have an amazing voice and songs, but her artistry that she brought to her music was mesmerizing. She had this fashion sense like no other! And as a little country girl who grew up in the middle of nowhere, singing was my first love, but I was always intrigued with fashion as well. I would get so excited to get to dress up if we got to go somewhere because that didn’t happen often living on a ranch 40 minutes from town. So, the fact that Shania, as an artist, was able to combine her music with a sense of fashion was a dream to me!"

Do you have an all-time favorite Shania Twain song?

"There are so many great Shania songs, so it's hard to choose just one favorite, but If I had to I would say 'Any Man of Mine.'"

Christian Lee Hutson, Julia Jacklin’s Shania Twain Cover Does Impress Me Much

Hutson teams up with the Australian singer-songwriter in his latest volume of The Version Suicides

By Angie Martoccio | Rolling Stone | August 6, 2021

It's impossible to forget Shania Twain’s video for “You’re Still the One,” where she strolls down the beach in a hazy blue light under a full moon (don’t confuse it with “Forever and for Always” — that’s a different beach vibe). The song is one of the many, many singles from 1997’s Come On Over, her biggest album that now hits millennials with pangs of nostalgia. Case in point: Christian Lee Hutson just dropped a cover of “You’re Still the One” with Julia Jacklin, and it’s excellent.

The track is off the third volume of Hutson’s The Version Suicides. Despite the fact that he recently covered Taylor Swift’s “Betty,” most of his renditions are significantly older — there’s his take on Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m Going Down,” the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” and ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.” And then there’s gems that hit the nostalgic sweet spot, like Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” and the La’s “There She Goes.” Make no mistakes: “You’re Still the One” falls into the latter category.

Hutson’s take on the Twain ballad stays close to the original, opening with silky acoustic chords as his understated vocals enter: “Looks like we made it/Look how far we’ve come, my baby.” Jacklin supplies backing vocals, taking the reins on the second verse. Her velvety, heart-wrenching voice is such a perfect match for the track that it could have easily been a b-side to her album Crushing. It’s the kind of beauty that can only occur when two indie musicians collaborate, with layers of emotion crashing down like the very waves Shania gazes at.

Just this week, Jacklin pushed her Australian tour to 2022 due to the ongoing pandemic, but with a silver lining: she’s working on new music. “I’m going to just make a new record and play for you next year when I understand/remember who I am etc., and when I hopefully don’t have to worry about anyone dying from hearing me sing,” she wrote. In the meantime, we can enjoy this gem.

Danielle Bradbery Inspired By Shania Twain + TikTok

By Lauryn Snapp | 94.9 The Bull - Atlanta's #1 For New Country | August 25, 2021

Country star Danielle Bradbery has served up an anthem for every scorned woman out there.

Her latest release, "Stop Draggin' Your Boots," tells the story of a woman who is tired of the runaround and is ready for a decision to be made - go all-in or get out.

In a recent interview with Cody Alan, Danielle shared how Shania Twain and TikTok inspired her sassy and straightforward new video.

"It reminded me of 90s country, Shania Twain," says the "Potential" singer. "It gave me that energy immediately, which obviously drew me in so much."

"One of the outfits was like a black one-piece with the hat. It was very much Shania," says Danielle. "We just went full send on the music video, did a whole dance, did the whole thing. We had so much fun with it."

Danielle continued to share that she hopes that fans will pick up on the dance and share their moves on TikTok.

"It's an actual dance. It's a little difficult. I know there are a lot of dancers out there, and if you try, I do not judge," laughs the singer. "It's so much fun!"

"I am trying to get used to TikTok myself," reveals Danielle as she admits that. "I do better at scrolling than I do posting."

Watch Danielle bring her bold dance moves and thigh-high boots to center screen by clicking the link below.

Bastian Baker on his relationship with Shania Twain (June 2021 interview in French)

"What does she mean to you, Shania? (journalist)

(Bastian Baker) : Ha it's hard to put words into the relationship we have, it's really something very special, quite unique in fact. And when I talk about her, I also want to talk about her husband Fred, her son Eja, who are really people with whom I love to spend time, with whom we have a musical and human connection ... And then there you have it, if we want to talk about a recent event: this world tour that I'm doing with her in the first part is something, it's almost unheard of in business music. We are all aware how often it is the same label that will try to put artists they want to promote in the first part of an artist such as Shania Twain. [...] She ignored all these rules and chose to take me in the first part to the general amazement. [...] I have a new audience thanks to her. Musically, he's someone who's a mentor to me. And on a personal level, she's just a super good friend with whom it's cool to go and have a fondue every now and then. And then on a personal level, she's just a super good friend with whom it's cool to go and have a fondue every now and then. [...]

On the days of the shows, Shania needs absolute focus, because it's two hours of show where she travels, where there is a lot of technology that is included in the show. So, we see each other the first time when I join her on stage, it's always quite funny. But on the other hand after the shows, the days off, we spend a lot of time together. So afterwards I always take care to always make room for their family life, I am not there to be the adopted son in all situations. But it is true that I believe that we have found a formula that works quite well where we respect each other." (2'46 to 5'45)

Nineties Country Is Blowing Up With Gen Z Listeners on Streaming

As young listeners flock to the hits of Alan Jackson, Reba, and Shania Twain, a new Spotify campaign dives deep into the polished sounds and high hair of the decade

By Joseph Hudak | Rolling Stone | September 21, 2021

Breland wasn’t even a year old when Deana Carter released “Strawberry Wine,” her 1996 ballad about the passing of teenage innocence beneath a “hot July moon.” But the country whiz kid who broke out with the viral “My Truck” regards Carter’s song as a touchstone of his introduction to country music.

“It really beautifully describes an experience that we all have: first love,” Breland, 26, tells Rolling Stone. “There’s a universal truth in the song. I can remember being 17 and feeling like I found the one. And as it turned out, it wasn’t.”

Twenty-five years since its release, “Strawberry Wine” and other Nineties-era country songs have become an essential part of Breland’s streaming playlists.

He’s not alone. Nineties hits by artists like Shania Twain, Alan Jackson, the Chicks, and George Strait have all found their way onto the Spotify playlists of Breland’s Gen Z peers. And the streaming service has taken note: On Tuesday, Spotify launched a specially curated “microsite” that amplifies country songs from that decade. It’s an interactive experience with kitschy graphics, deep-dive interviews, and a new Spotify Singles session with Parker McCollum and Tenille Arts covering Nineties classics like Strait’s “Carrying Your Love With Me” and the Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces.” Breland remakes “Strawberry Wine” as a Nineties R&B ballad.

“I have been singing that song kind of casually over the past few years and was like, ‘Would it be weird for me to try to do a cover?’ I’ve heard a lot of women do it beautiful, but I felt like I could bring a different energy to it,” he says.

It’s all part of Spotify’s campaign to satisfy the listening desires of a surprisingly young audience. According to the streaming service, as many users between the ages of 19 and 24 are listening to Spotify’s 90s Country playlist as users over the age of 45 — the very demographic that was hearing Brooks & Dunn, Joe Diffie, and David Lee Murphy on terrestrial radio live back in the day.

Brittany Schaffer, Head of Artist & Label Partnerships for Spotify in Nashville, says the company noted the trend toward Nineties country around the start of the pandemic, when listeners were seeking comfort in nostalgia. It’s since transcended that novelty and become its own phenomenon. Nearly 90 million playlists from Gen Z users include country songs from the era, while streams of Spotify’s 90s Country playlist in the U.S. have grown 70% since 2018 among Gen Z.

“The growth has been completely organic. The consumption has been naturally driven by our listeners and their own listening habits, and as we started digging into the trend, we started noticing that a significant amount of the growth was coming from Millennials and Gen Z,” Schaffer says. “And when you think about Millennials, it’s not necessarily surprising because that was the soundtrack of our upbringing. With Gen Z, it’s interesting because a large portion of their generation weren’t even alive when these songs were released.”

If they were, they were as young as Breland was. The majority of Spotify’s top five most-shared Nineties country songs among Gen Z users were released at the tail end of the decade: Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”, Lonestar’s “Amazed,” and the Chicks’ “Cowboy Take Me Away” all arrived in 1999, with Twain’s “You’re Still the One” coming in 1998. The oldest of the top five was released in 1993, Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee.”

Spotify hopes to deepen its young listeners’ investment in Nineties country by introducing them to the back catalogs of some key artists of the decade. The microsite highlights six albums: Brooks & Dunn’s Hard Workin’ Man, Reba McEntire’s It’s Your Call, Clay Walker’s If I Could Make a Living, Trisha Yearwood’s self-titled debut, Jackson’s Everything I Love, and Twain’s The Woman in Me. Not coincidentally, each of those artists continues to tour three decades later.

“I think it helps that a lot of our Nineties artists are still performing and still releasing music,” Schaffer says. “You’ve got Alan Jackson releasing music this year. You’ve got Brooks & Dunn and Shania Twain collaborating with other artists.”

But the Nineties country resurgence isn’t limited to Spotify. Apple Music, Amazon Music and Pandora have all realized the demand for the subgenre and curated their own Nineties country playlists. Today’s Nashville stars have taken note as well: For the past few years, artists like Luke Combs, Jon Pardi, Carly Pearce, Hailey Whitters, and Midland have been mining the sound, songwriting, and even style of the decade to great success. Blake Shelton based his entire Friends and Heroes Tour around celebrating veterans like John Anderson and Tracy Byrd. And when Joe Diffie, a Nineties icon with hits like “John Deere Greene” and “Pickup Man,” died in March 2020 from Covid-19, our remembrance of Diffie was one of Rolling Stone’s most-read stories ever.

Listening to Schaffer and Breland discuss the decade, the ongoing appeal of Nineties country can be attributed in part to two of the genre’s most enduring talking points — the notions of honesty and of a simpler time.

“One of the things that we’ve started to learn about Gen Z is that they are conditioned to be exactly who they are,” Schaffer says. “That positions with country music really well, because country has always been about authenticity.”

“The Nineties was a time of prosperity and it was also the last few years before all of the modern technology and the Internet that we have today,” says Breland. “But it really comes down to storytelling more than anything else.”

WATCH: Carly Pearce Channels Shania Twain with Sassy ‘Any Man Of Mine’ Cover

By Lauren Jo Black | Country Now | January 1, 2022

CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Carly Pearce covered one of her musical heroes on New Year’s Eve when she performed Shania Twain’s “Any Man Of Mine” during New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash on Friday (Dec. 31).

Pearce took the stage at Nashville’s Skydeck at Assembly Food Hall on New Year’s Eve to perform her second single, “Hide The Wine.”

Sporting a sequin snakeskin mini dress and black booties, Pearce delivered all the sass as she went on to cover the Shania Twain classic.

“Where my ladies at tonight,” Pearce asked the sold-out crowd. “Yall, Shania Twain, I grew up on her. She taught me that all you men out there need to know what a woman wants.”

“Any Man Of Mine” was co-written by Twain and her former husband/collaborator, Robert John “Mutt” Lange. It was released in 1995 and soon became her first chart-topping hit.

Pearce previously opened up about Twain and the influence she had on her during an interview with Rolling Stone

“I loved Shania [Twain] because I felt like she was such a writer, but also such an artist. I loved seeing who played on the records. I loved seeing all those things,” she shared.

The inaugural New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash also featured performances from Fisk Jubilee Singers, Lady A, Ingrid Andress, BRELAND, King Calaway, Riley Green, Chris Janson, Jon Pardi, Lainey Wilson, Jason Aldean, Jimmie Allen, Kelsea Ballerini, Gabby Barrett, Dierks Bentley, Brooks & Dunn, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, Cole Swindell and more.

Sam Hunt, Elle King and Zac Brown Band were also set to perform during the concert event, however they dropped off the lineup the day before.

The five-hour celebration also included once-in-a-lifetime collaborations, performances of chart-topping hits and covers of some of the most iconic songs in country music.

Co-hosted by Radio and TV personality Bobby Bones and Entertainment Tonight‘s Rachel Smith, the star-studded New Year’s Eve special aired live from Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday, December 31 (8:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT, 11:30 PM-1:30 AM, ET/PT), on CBS Television Network.

The show was also available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

CB News article: "RENAULT INVITES NOT TO USE YOUR CAR" (March 7 by Ségolène Montcel)

In his latest film, imagined with his agency Publicis Conseil, Renault stages protagonists who give up using Renault Captur E-Tech hybrid, preferring to cycle or walk. The film anticipates the new LOM law (mobility orientation law) aimed at reducing the use of the car for daily journeys. We can read in the press release that "in a context of climate crisis, where the transformation of our lifestyles is inevitable, Renault is once again positioning itself on the side of life and societal progress with this new story". Publicis Conseil collaborated with Natanael Ericsson to produce this film. The cover of Shania Twain's song “you're still the one” by Okay Kaya, orchestrated by Start-Rec accompanies the film by emphasizing that Renault Captur E-Tech hybrid remains present when we need it, "but it It's still good not to use it all the time".

Best Quotes From Shania Twain

By Paige Brandon | COWGIRL Magazine | April 11, 2022

Selling over 100 million records, Shania Twain has certainly earned her title, “Queen of Country Pop!”

From writing music to living life, Twain has a few words to share with us!

  • “It’s important to give it all you have while you have the chance.”

Looks like Shania is going to talk to a Mindset Coach for artists in Los Angeles. Mindset Coaches help people to achieve their goals through clarity, insight and rapid transformation tools that get results. They are dedicated to rewiring an individual's mindset, allowing them to be the very best version of themselves and to unlock their full potential. These coaches typically avoid directly giving advice or solving problems.

So maybe Shania isn't going to see that mindset coach. Maybe the coach will be on the "Superfan" set for some reason. Her Twitter page says she is also an actor and producer.

Grand Ole Opry announces ‘Opry Loves the 90s’

By Buddy Iahn | The Music Universe | April 21, 2022

The Grand Ole Opry will celebrate ‘90s country music with a limited time “Opry Loves The ‘90s” experience, including a new interactive tour exhibition, special in-show Opry programming, ‘90s-themed Opry Plaza Parties and surprise artist collaborations honoring one of the most celebrated decades in country music. The “Opry Loves The ’90s” celebration kicks off on May 16th and runs through December 31st.

“For nearly a century, the Opry has been dedicated to honoring country music’s rich history and dynamic presence. With ‘Opry Loves The ‘90s,’ we’re excited to celebrate a formative decade that made an impact on country music that will be felt forever thanks to the influence of artists known now by just one name: Garth, Trisha, Vince, Reba and Shania, among many more. For me, the country music of the ‘90s made me want to move to Nashville and be a part of what happens in this great music community,” shares Dan Rogers, Grand Ole Opry Vice President/Executive Producer. “Country music fans of all ages seem to have their own ‘90s country stories, and just as the Opry did during that decade, we aim to help them celebrate those stories, create new ones and experience some of the songs that made many of us huge fans 30 years ago.”

“Opry Loves The ‘90s” begins with a new tour exhibit celebrating the artists, songs and songwriters that defined the music in the 1990s. Featured displays include iconic stage wear and artifacts representing career milestone moments and performances from Opry members Clint Black, Garth Brooks, Terri Clark, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Lorrie Morgan, Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, Trisha Yearwood and more. The exhibit will also include interactive experiences including photo opportunities and a digital gaming console for fans who want to try their hand at answering ‘90s country music trivia and identify some of the most famous musical “riffs” of iconic ‘90s country songs.

The Opry, which showcases the past, present and future of country music in every show, will also include special nods to ‘90s country during each Opry show, including featured performances from some of the artists who rose to fame in the ‘90s, artists who were influenced by the music from the ‘90s and video highlights from the Opry archives.

Beginning Memorial Day weekend, the Opry will host free public ‘90s Country Plaza Parties that will run each Friday and Saturday through Labor Day weekend and again on Fridays and Saturdays in October to celebrate the 97th Opry anniversary.

“Opry Loves The ‘90s” celebration continues across other Opry Entertainment Group properties including WSM Radio, Circle Network and Opry.com, as well as across the Opry’s social channels.

Ava Max : "Shania Twain was like... INSANE !"

During the interview with Christina Kay for Walk 97.5 radio, Ava Max was asked who she would invite to Coachella. Shania Twain was brought up.

Journalist: "Okay so Harry Styles recently brought out Shania Twain at Coachella (Ava Max's reaction: smiling, hand on heart), so I was thinking, I know a moment I never knew I needed. Let's say you're performing at Coachella. You can bring out anybody on stage with you, who are you bringing out?"

Ava Max: "Um anyone... He tooks a good good one! Shania Twain was like... insane! ..." She then said that she would otherwise choose Mariah Carey or Celine Dion.

Rina Sawayama Pulls Up to the Future Pop Rodeo on New Song ‘This Hell’

Track will appear on the musician’s upcoming second album, Hold the Girl

By Jon Blistein | Rolling Stone | May 18, 2022

Rina Sawayama has delivered a reference-laden toast to a good life amidst so much chaos on her new song, “This Hell.” The track marks the lead single from Sawayama’s next album, Hold the Girl, out Sept. 2 via Dirty Hit.

“This Hell” finds Sawayama injecting her future pop bona fides with some classic Nineties country (there’s even a “Let’s go, girls” at the very start of the tune, a direct nod to Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”). The rest of the song is a hook-laden rodeo ride through the current cultural landscape, featuring some righteous jabs at the paparazzi for their treatment of Britney Spears, Princess Diana, and Whitney Houston. But all of it is centered around a firm rallying cry: “This hell is better with you/We’re burning up together/Baby that makes two.”

Sawayama crafted “This Hell” with producers Paul Epworth and Clarence Clarity, with additional writing help from Vixen. In a statement, Sawayama said she set out to write a “euphoric and tongue-in-cheek country-pop song” with “This Hell,” adding, “Country music at its core to me represents comfort, brilliant storytelling and authentic expression of the writer’s reality.”

She also noted how she hopes the song offers some comfort in this particular moment of turmoil: “It’s an important song for me given the human rights that are being taken away from minorities at a rapid rate in the name of traditional religious beliefs, more specifically I was thinking about the rights being taken away from the LGBTQ community when I wrote this song. When the world tells us we don’t deserve love and protection, we have no choice but to give love and protection to each other. This Hell is better with you.”

As for Hold the Girl, the album will mark Sawayama’s second LP following her widely celebrated 2020 debut, Sawayama. Along with working with Epworth and Clarity, her frequent collaborator, the record features contributions from Lauren Aquilinia and Marcus Andersson.

Exclusive Premiere: Watch Danielle Ryan’s New Video for Her Cover of Shania Twain’s “Don’t Be Stupid”

Aesthetic Magazine | May 12, 2022

Emerging Canadian country music singer-songwriter Danielle Ryan has released the third video for her new video project entitled “Country Songs That Raised Me”.

The “Country Songs That Raised Me” project features videos of live performance covers of seven classic country songs. The project will follow a week after the release of Danielle’s debut EP Middle of the Madness on April 22nd. The third video is out tomorrow followed by the other five videos each released one week apart.

The third video is a cover of the classic Shania Twain song “Don’t Be Stupid”, which you can watch exclusively via Aesthetic Magazine below.

“In our household Shania Twain was it. I have great memories dancing around the living room with my brother and sisters to the “Up!” album,” said Ryan. “I remember when I used to take the bus home from school and I would listen to Shania’s albums on repeat on my iPod. She is someone that I can listen to all the time and it never gets old. “Don’t Be Stupid” has always been a favourite. The sassy writing and the melodies slap. The violin in this song is what got me truly hooked.”

Ryan’s highly anticipated EP touches on the phases of falling in love, coming to terms with heartbreak, and being fully present in each moment. Danielle wrote every song on the 7-track EP, only taking help with arrangements and production from producer Brian Howes (Nickelback, Simple Plan) and a few other trusted collaborators – the longest-standing and most trusted of whom is in fact her brother, Brandon Severinski.

In addition to gearing up to release her EP, Danielle was also just announced as a SiriusXM Top of The Country semi-finalist. Ryan, along with seven other artists, will be heading to a studio session in Vancouver to audition to be one of three finalists and receive travel grants to create professionally recorded and mixed video and audio files of their performance. Then it’s over to the fans to vote who will be the top three finalists in the running for a mentorship opportunity of a lifetime.

For over a decade, Ryan has been hard at work honing her writing and performance skills behind the curtain. Born and raised on her great grandfather’s dairy farm in rural British Columbia, she grew up with a sharp awareness of the mechanics of modern pop thanks to some of the artists who helped shape her sound.

Clearly, great things can come when you combine a rancher’s work ethic with an artist’s insatiable creative calling. Through just its handful of songs, Middle of the Madness solidifies Danielle Ryan’s impressive sonic foundation – one she’ll be building on for years to come.

Rina is awesome. Apparently her upcoming album is inspired in part by Shania. You can definitely hear it on “This Hell”, not only sonically but just the fun nature of the lyrics.

The fact that young country stars like Kelsea Ballerini and young dance/pop stars like Rina Sawayama give her credit for her influence is just more evidence Shania is a singular artist. The queen of country pop title has always been well deserved.
